Title: RIP Mr. Rogers
Post by Brian_Y on Feb 27th, 2003, 8:07am
Fred Rogers passed yesterday.  A good man.  I hope I can be so lucky to have that one simple thing said about me.  At the very least.

He was a good man and did something meaningful....

I've lost part of my own childhood today and felt like sharing although I am not known for my sentimentality.

Any recollections?

:'(

The only recollections that  I have or Mr. Rogers is when Eddy Murphy used to spoof him on SNL! LOL  Here in Canada, I used to watch The Friendly Giant, Mr. Dressup and Sesame Street.  We didn't have Mr. Rogers.

Yep, I remember Mr Rogers.  I grew up with him on my TV in the morning, and my kids did too!

I remember having to watch him at day care..

and I also remember how they NEVER said my name on Romper Room.   But that's a different issue all together... another thread.. maybe even a whole separate MENTAL ILLNESS Message board that I need.. who knows.  Childhood issues.  LOL

Poor Mr Rogers.  He did do a lot of good things.   A lot of people made fun of him.. but I didn't care what he did in his personal life.. my kids loved his show, and I grew up with it..

What did he die of??   :-[

Tina :-*

I just watched Mr. Rogers yesturday....he had a segment on about how BELLS are made.....that's odd cuz I don't usually watch that show but did when I was a kid off and on ....I was always amazed at how nice and polite he was and patient.....he actually struck me as odd because of it..........Pam

Hey, Brian, that was nice....even though I, too, am a Howdy Doody, Chucko the Clown girl, meself.....oh, and my kids were soooo into Sesame Street, and 3...2...1.....Contact. Mr Rogers had some wonderful ideas, and he presented them with a gentle spirit....and tons of consideration, but Brian, he really, REALLY bugged me! More sweaters, in more colors than I've ever owned, and, well, not that this means anything, but he played with puppets, for corn's sake....then there's that "Will you be my neighbor?" stuff....like I'm gonna ask a potential buyer of the house next door...."won't you be MY neighbor?"- positively smacks of pathetic insecurity! Take what you need from Mr Rogers, and leave the rest.......
Oh, and Woobie, he died at 74, of cancer. May he rest in peace, and, Brian, even though I have poked fun, he WAS a good gentle reminder of the best in all of us.

Brian,

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Fred Rogers about 5 years ago (I never really watched his show as a kid).  A friend of mine and I went for a motocycle ride in the hills outside San Francisco and we stopped for a coffee at a diner - Mr. Rogers was having coffee in the diner (he was in town for some charity event).  My friend (also named Chris) plays for the SF Symphony, and they started discussing classical music.  45 minutes later, he needed to leave, but exchanged phone numbers and addresses with my friend Chris.  He wrote to my friend 3 or 4 times over the past five years.  As an FYI, he is just as nice in person as he appeared on TV.  No different.

Chris

I read that too this morning. And then I get this "Breaking News" e-mail from ABC News:

"Breaking News from ABCNEWS.com

America's Terror Alert Level to Be Lowered to Yellow

Get the Latest at ABCNEWS.com

http://www.abcnews.go.com?cmp=EM1391"

Coincidence or not? Hmmmmmm.

:'( Thanks for the news Brian.

Sure, as a kid I enjoyed watching SS,  Mr. Rogers, Capt. Kangaroo, etc. Like many people, as I grew older I saw the Eddie Murphy spoofs and laughed along. As my kids have been growing up they too have watched and just recently I saw that he had filmed his last show.  :( My kids enjoyed it when they were young, but as they get bigger they just sorta' grow out of the show. Oh well, people can make fun of the show, but the man sure exuded kindness.

Take Care
BruceD
I'm sorry to hear about his passing and I wonder how many people could sing that song...

Now he is with all his neighbors who passed before him. :)

I'm so sad today.  I LOVED Mr. Rogers!  :'(
I will always remember him changing his shoes & his sweater when he would come in from outside.  He was just a gentle soul.  Truly loved by thousands of children.

Tina...I know what you mean I never got my name called on Romper Room either...I'm surprised they didn't call your name, but who's ever going to call out Virginia??  Oh well!  ???

Rest in Peace Fred Rogers!

wellll.... I know what was in the media in his late life..and the okes....the spoofs.....etc,etc... BUT...

I grew up with Mr. Rogers and learned (call them corny if you must) only good things on his show.  No sarcasm, no cynicism which is rare even in kids' shows nowadays.

My daughter loved him and was very sad to hear he passed.  She's 7.

I loved watching him as a kid. I really am going to miss him.
Now who am I going to use as a role model? Linus Torvalds?

No doubt Mr. Rogers will go down in the history books as one of those individuals who had an amazing positive impact on millions of young lives.

Saw a documentary on him during the filming of one of his shows.  If anything could go wrong, it did.  Amist the carnage of fallen props, busted lights, destroyed set and crew running around like headless chickens sat Mr. Rogers.  Peaceful, unalarmed and the epitimy of calm.

he really is my neighbor (actually he lives 10 mins. from me) he ain't no pedaphile but he alway's striked me as gay even though he had a wife & kids. none of my kids ever got into his show. from what i heard about him he was the same in real life as he was on his show. they kept his cancer under wrap's even in the 'Burgh.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        ............2late

my kids used to watch him. I stopped them after they suddenly stopped wanting to take baths. Why you ask? They were afraid of going down the drain. Where on God's green earth did you hear that? Mr Rogers singing...'' you can never go down the drain...."
It had never occured to them until he started that crap....

They loved the Count on Sesame street tho, "one poopie, two poopies....." coming out of the bathroom.

Kids - gotta love em.

I know Mr. Rogers seems kinda corny if you think about it as an adult but I really liked him as a child. Did you know he did most of the voices for the land of make believe? And btw...I never got my name called on Romper Room either...hurt my feelings. I was going to quote something someone said in an earlier message but I don't know how to use that blue box thingy that you all use. Maybe someone could help me out.  :)

Mr. Rogers, Sesame Street and The Electric Company (remember this one?). They sometimes played the same episode in Spanish immediately following. I learned to count to 10 on the Spanish version of Sesame Street.

Did you notice that they kept the same pair of psychadelic curtains up on the set of Mr. Rogers? Must have been the same ones for 30 years, because I don't know where you would buy fabric like that to replace them.

Not many people die and have millions talk about how nice they are.

I'm too old to have grown up watching him but I liked having him in the background as I read the paper.  Easy TV listening and a sweet guy.
