Title: RIP Mr. Rogers Post by Brian_Y on Feb 27th, 2003, 8:07am Fred Rogers passed yesterday. A good man. I hope I can be so lucky to have that one simple thing said about me. At the very least. He was a good man and did something meaningful.... I've lost part of my own childhood today and felt like sharing although I am not known for my sentimentality. Any recollections? :'( |

I remember having to watch him at day care.. and I also remember how they NEVER said my name on Romper Room. But that's a different issue all together... another thread.. maybe even a whole separate MENTAL ILLNESS Message board that I need.. who knows. Childhood issues. LOL Poor Mr Rogers. He did do a lot of good things. A lot of people made fun of him.. but I didn't care what he did in his personal life.. my kids loved his show, and I grew up with it.. Mr Rogers had some wonderful ideas, and he presented them with a gentle spirit....and tons of consideration, but Brian, he really, REALLY bugged me! More sweaters, in more colors than I've ever owned, and, well, not that this means anything, but he played with puppets, for corn's sake....then there's that "Will you be my neighbor?" stuff....like I'm gonna ask a potential buyer of the house next door...."won't you be MY neighbor?"- positively smacks of pathetic insecurity! Take what you need from Mr Rogers, and leave the rest....... Oh, and Woobie, he died at 74, of cancer. May he rest in peace, and, Brian, even though I have poked fun, he WAS a good gentle reminder of the best in all of us. ;)Cathi |

A friend of mine and I went for a motocycle ride in the hills outside San Francisco and we stopped for a coffee at a diner - Mr. Rogers was having coffee in the diner (he was in town for some charity event). My friend (also named Chris) plays for the SF Symphony, and they started discussing classical music. 45 minutes later, he needed to leave, but exchanged phone numbers and addresses with my friend Chris. He wrote to my friend 3 or 4 times over the past five years. As an FYI, he is just as nice in person as he appeared on TV. No different. Chris |

Kangaroo, etc. Like many people, as I grew older I saw the Eddie Murphy spoofs and laughed along. As my kids have been growing up they too have watched and just recently I saw that he had filmed his last show. :( My kids enjoyed it when they were young, but as they get bigger they just sorta' grow out of the show. Oh well, people can make fun of the show, but the man sure exuded kindness. Take Care BruceD I'm sorry to hear about his passing and I wonder how many people could sing that song... |

I grew up with Mr. Rogers and learned (call them corny if you must) only good things on his show. No sarcasm, no cynicism which is rare even in kids' shows nowadays. My daughter loved him and was very sad to hear he passed. She's 7. |

Saw a documentary on him during the filming of one of his shows. If anything could go wrong, it did. Amist the carnage of fallen props, busted lights, destroyed set and crew running around like headless chickens sat Mr. Rogers. Peaceful, unalarmed and the epitimy of calm. |

They were afraid of going down the drain. Where on God's green earth did you hear that? Mr Rogers singing...'' you can never go down the drain...." It had never occured to them until he started that crap.... They loved the Count on Sesame street tho, "one poopie, two poopies....." coming out of the bathroom. Kids - gotta love em. |

They sometimes played the same episode in Spanish immediately following. I learned to count to 10 on the Spanish version of Sesame Street. Did you notice that they kept the same pair of psychadelic curtains up on the set of Mr. Rogers? Must have been the same ones for 30 years, because I don't know where you would buy fabric like that to replace them. |
