Title: A long long wait
Post by Charlie on Jan 27th, 2003, 6:14am
Damn, In the late wee hours of the morning, it now takes me up to 5 minutes to get to the site, another 5 to open a topic and often more than 5 minutes to reply.....if I’m lucky.  Of course since Saturday’s mess, I sometimes have to try a half a dozen times to get here at all. This has gotten worse in January. Am I the only one and why?

Charlie

Sorry Charlie,

but I have no troubles at all!!! ;D

As for the question why....
Maybe it's personal, maybe your cable needs some grease, maybe I don't have a clou.... ;)

Good luck with your patience.

Hey Charlie,  I thought I was the only one. Alot of times it takes me forever to open a topic, many times it just "times out".  I could not even get on thru AOhell before, I had to go thru internet explorer and even then slow as a snail. Are you also on AOL? I've been thinking it was just my crappy pc.

Charlie,
It is slow on my end too. On friday I was on this site and my puter was infected with the ABC virus. I am not sure where it came from but this was the only site loaded. Anyway do you use Netscape. I had 6.2 but after upgrading to 7.0 things are going much faster.
                           Opus :P

Nope Suzy

Nope Opus

I use a local server and IE 6.

Can't afford DSL  >:(

Dialup is slow but Saturday, nothing worked. Effen worm. This is never fast, but in the very early morning it's horribly slow. It's not bad in the PM and that makes no sense to me.

Glad it isn't just me.....I guess.

Took  8-1/2 minutes to post that reply and then I got knocked off and had to repost. I have no idea how long this will take.

Charlie

Here I am again.  "Can't find server"  for the second time

I have had no problems getting into the site at all except for this weekend and I attributed that to the worm virus that is effecting the internet.

OPus, I have been on this site several times a day.  I have Nortin Antivirus and I did not get the ABC virus.  Don't think it is the site.  Maybe just coincindence your machine flaged it at that time.  If it were the site there would be lots of people complaining.

I hate it when that happens.....here's why its slow..

http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2003-04.html

You can go here...http://www.internettrafficreport.com/main.htm...and see the global effect of the worm and the Internet's health in general. Look for affected servers in your area. If you are really interested go here...http://www.eeye.com/html/Research/Flash/sapphire.txt...these guys have cracked the code of the worm. I got a feeling this may get worse before it gets better. I suspect this was a recruitment of of unsecure computers and a massive DDOS attack is coming. Look for a high profile website to be crashed in the next week or so.....or maybe not. Update your Virus software today and do a full system scan, just to be safe. ;)

PS  Charlie I have not experienced any slowdown here in TN, so I suspect the slowdowns are regional and should be cleared up today.

I update regular and run scans daily. Isn't that the idea bahind the worm virus's....ta screw up the server's and overload em....'n piss us off ?? Pam  :)

Charlie,

I'm having a problem with the slowness as well.  Sometimes can't even get the site to load.  I'm on cable, but it still can be very slow and sometimes won't open at all.

I thought it was just at my end with my network.  Maybe not.

The Internet has seen a forty percent degradation in data transfer in the last year.
Then you have all the Viriie, Trojans and Worms for Microsoft.
Legacy equipment is not being replaced and IT pros are being laid off because of the economy.
I think the whole thing is going very well in the light of all that..
There are things we could all do to help the problem. After all the net is a shared resource, but thats a rant for a different venue..

Your problem may go away by the end of the week. Charlie. If not send Microsoft a nasty email. hehehehehe

I personally haven't noticed anything unusual, the board can run a little slow sometimes, or maybe its just my impatience. Traffic is always slower during prime time on the weekends.
My only other suggestion is......blame Bill Gates, heck we should all be getting a rebate check from the bastard anyway.

As for the slowdown, etc. This place has never been fast, but for me, it always takes more than a minute to come up after 4:00 AM or so until mid-morning. I know how nuts that sounds but it's been true for more than a month.  When I logged in just now, things were fine.....about 15 seconds to get to the site and less to get to the posts.

I know of the worm/virus and I too, gave up Saturday and some of Sunday. It wasn't worth the wait. Maybe things will be back to what I think of as normal now.

It's time to exile the bastards who did this to an asteroid or enter them in the mid-Atlantic concrete canoe derby.

Oh, and to the serious part of the thread:

In order to eliminate, you have to get rid of the Trojans unless you keep them in your sewing box. That can be dangerous :o

Charlie,  I logged on 3am this morn and zipped right thru everything, logged back on at 7am and slow as hell again.  It does get annoying...as I type now, half the smiley tags above are missing   >:(
Not many posts during the nite, wondering if others had probs too.

Looks pretty good this morning.....

9:15  AM EST from Tennessee. When you type a URL into your browser and hit go, there's always a pause before the page loads. This is the amount of time your request takes to get to the server, plus the amount of time (usually similar to the first) it takes for the web page to be returned.

It can be measured using something called a "ping". A ping is a message sent to a server simply asking for a simple reply (known in some areas as a "pong"). It is a quick way of finding out how long that message takes to travel across the Internet, and you can also use it to discover the route your message is taking.
