Title: I found a new trigger
Post by fubar on Jan 22nd, 2003, 4:33pm
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I lost a 580GB partition on my system.  Yes, that is 580 GIGabytes.  Don't ask me why or how... I don't know what happened.  I thought I was going to be OK (mentally) until the quote from disaster recovery came in... low end: $22,500 but could cost as much as $59,000 to get the data off the drives.  Yeah right... BAM!  Talk about stress meter pegged to the left... jesus.

sorry, had to vent.  As you were.

Fubar-You think YOU"VE got it bad....I can't even figure what all that means :o!!! let's see, laptop, pentium chip....and a XXX-yr old memory.....the one in my brain......data? Store data? That's my palm pilot, and every scrap of paper I can get my hands on.........stuffed into a basket!
I am sorry, Fu! Maybe  a second opinion would help? Have you tried kicking your hard drive.......well, I'm out of ideas! I know, go have some sushi.....miso soup cures everything!! Seriously, I hope there is a better solution waiting for you to find it!

Bummer dude.  Stress really can be a trigger, huh?  It's funny, because I find that relaxing (reading for pleasure, watching TV)is the most common trigger for me.

Do you remember about 9 or 10 months ago when we had a decent size earthquake here in the Bay Area?  It's magnitutde was strong enough to knock over books, etc, but not really cause structural damage?  Anyway, it triggered a doozy for me...running around holding my head while trying to ensure my dishes didn't fall down...LOL.

Ok, I give up, what could you possibly have stored on a 580gb space, the plans for a small city? Also thanks for reminding me to do a back up. Couldn't you do the recovery yourself or was it a mechanical failure?

The only thing I can think of that commands that kind of "real estate" on a computer is video data -- that or a really big server?

Whatever it is, it sound like a real pain in the posterior!

Sorry about you 'puter woes and your head, Fu...hope tomorrow's a brighter day!   :)

I had a feeling people would ask what the hell I needed a 580 gigabyte partition for...  I use it for my music collection and my home videos, mostly.  You'd be surprised how big those mpg files can get.  I'm lucky the music is all my own CD's or I'd really be freaking out.  The viseo is all on tape too, so I'll just have to spend the next 3 months ripping and loading up again.  Argh.

If you have 2 separate partitions just use Powerquest Drive Image 2003 and all your data is safe next time.I have 5X200GB disks and 1 of them are for security"images only"

Hey Fu,

Mind telling me how you get your videos into MPEG format?  I've been wanting to do that, but I'm an idiot when it comes to the video thing and computers.

I much prefer writing code that makes things pretty LOL

I heard that crash all the way here FU.....
Sorry about the loss, I do understand the amount of time in such a thing. I have a link to a program you may be interested in. I cannot use it anymore because I now use NTFS file system but if you are using FAT32 this is one cool program. My theory was you are actually Google....thats why you needed so much storage, or you were copying my porn collection! ;D
Good luck FU.....

Hey Cat,

I get the video on the computer by using a video capture board for old analog inputs like Hi8 or VCR and I use my Sony handycam to make video clips directly over firewire.  That is, I tape something, then my computer grabs it from the camera over firewire.

Try not to get too stressed out...i know i am one to talk now about stress..the last month i have woke up with my shoulders up to my ears and my teeth clenched from stress...the thing that scares me the most is that i dont usually get hit then, it is when i finally relax that the beast sneaks in...wish my mind would tell my body not to allow stress in...unfortunately , it does not always work that way..good luck, bro..smiles,nancyc

Fubar,

I know stress is a biggg!!! trigger for me.....My stepfater just passed and I stayed to help my mother for a few weeks to sort things out... One of my tasks was to merge his computer with hers...

Similar situations...  I had 2 hard drives go bad and sound card.....  buy the time it was over my stress level was bad enough to have caused a couple.. but not $59k...... to get the data off....   Luckily I had made a backup before we had started merging the two...

Hope all ends up well....

Fubar.

I have a data recovery company that I work with that their maximum charge for data recovery is $3900.  They are excellent.  I have used them numerous times - the chief of police's hard drive crashed - recovered the data for 1900.  I can send you their information if you want.

When I call stress a trigger, I don't mean the stress itself is a trigger.  In fact I am sure I've never been attacked while my stress meter is pegged.  The problem is, the second I start to relax I get hit.  I'm not talking about the concious act of trying to calm down, I'm talking about that feeling when you know your body has finally decided it's OK to relax and you start to forget why you were stressed in the first place.  At that moment... BAM.

Oh, and Rev, who do you think provided the quote to me?  It was a company in Novato...  I have to say though that those guys are totally cool.  They have recovered one drive for me already a while back.  This time, their technician let me in on a little secret that saved my ass... (too complicated to detail here).

So, I got *almost* all of my data back.  I got all of the music, but I'm still working on video.  I definitely lost all of my applications and will need to reinstall (that'll take 3 weeks of YUMMY stress)

For me it is the 'Stress period', not the 'relaxation period'.  That may have something to do with my boss and co-workers!
