Title: Can I open a new topic? DJ's Imitrex tip
Post by totka on Jan 19th, 2003, 12:37am
I'm just after an attack.
I had an KIP 8-9 pain and I tried DJ's 'half-shot' tip on my Imigran autoinjection. It works! A bit slower than a full injection but works. (5 minutes instead of 2 mins, Eeh!)
I tried to make some modification on the autoinjector but Glaxo works too perfectly. But I made a tool to help the 'torture'.
I don't know terms but I try to explain. (It would be much easier in Hungarian language. ;) )
So... I made a plastic stick. It has a collar/neck on the middle. The left part of this stuff is exactly 21 mm (7/8" )
the right part' length is as you want.

        /--------------I                    I
----<       ((((                    --------I---------
        \--------------I                    I

      syringe                             my plastic stick
               ((((  piston

If you stuck/tuck/diddle into the syringe (I don't know which is the correct word) the 21 mm long part of this stick  and press it, the piston stops on the half way.

I'll take some drawings (or maybe pictures) on my website please visit if you want. http://totka.freeweb.hu

A while back a guy posted about taking 2 autoinjectors.  On the first one he cut off part of the white plastic stick that does the injecting (5 or 7 mm, I just don't remember how much).  He marked the outside of the injector #1.  When used, this inject 1/2 the syringe.  He then takes the syringe out and puts it into injector #2, an unmodified one for the 2nd half of the injection.

If anyone experiments with this, let us know how much you need to cut off of the plastic injection rod.

Hi Bob

It was me who posted about using 2 autoinjectors. We don't get imigran in any injectable form other than the "autopack" here. I am also not too keen on injecting myself with a standard syringe needle. I also could not bring myself to use the qtip method. You have to stick yourself with a tiny vial first. Too gory for my taste!

As for the ammount to cut off the plastic stick in the injector. I think it is actually 7.5 mm. But to determine this accurately remove one of the vials as you would using the qtip method. Scrape off the paper on the vial to reveal the fluid. Measure the "length" of the fluid. Divide this by 2 and the result is the amount you need to shorten the stick by to deliver a 1/2 dose.
Some people have reported that 1/3 of a dose works for them. In this case get 3 injectors and divide the length into 3 and shorten the sticks accordingly.

I thought also about making a collar for the autoinjector to reduce the depth of shot, but found this much easier.

John
