Title: Cigarettes... Post by brain_cramps on Jan 15th, 2003, 11:48am I've noticed a few people say things along the lines of 'After the beast leaves, I like to relax with a smoke." For me, this is almost like an immediate invitation for the bastard to return. I learned a long time ago that, for me, this is a BAD move!!! Anyone else? |

Title: Re: Cigarettes... Post by Brassbear on Jan 15th, 2003, 12:32pm BC, I've got to join your camp on this one. I only smoke "occasionally". Usually no more than 1 one 2 in a day when I do. I have found that while it does not instantly trigger a full blown CH, it will sure bring on a shadow in a hurry. Honest folks, I have nothing against your smoking and I'm not going to tell ya to stop. You know what works for you better than anyone. It just isn't good for ME. Michael |

Title: Re: Cigarettes... Post by Charlie on Jan 15th, 2003, 7:43pm I don't think smoking had anything to do with my CH. I never felt like doing it when being visited my this horror either. I was a very heavy smoker. As they are tired of hearing..I quit 22 years ago after my dentist told me I stunk. I know how odd that sounds...::) My headaches have been gone for 11 years. Beats me........ :-/ Other than the bothersome statistic that chers here, are smokers about twice the national average, there is nothing to link the two. Charlie |

Title: Re: Cigarettes... Post by Ueli on Jan 15th, 2003, 7:48pm Before medication, when my attacks went full blast, I used to measure the attack length in number of cigarillos smoked. (BTW, I miss Charlie's input here ;D) |

Title: Re: Cigarettes... Post by Roxy on Jan 15th, 2003, 9:24pm Ueli, I don't know if you have them over there (of course I'm sure you do), but they make some cigarillos that have been dipped in brandy, rum, or cognac........oh my, they are lovely!!! ;D My husband won't let me around cigars....he says it's too painful to watch. What can I say....I inhale. 8) |

Title: Re: Cigarettes... Post by Mastifflvr28 on Jan 16th, 2003, 1:00am brain...I'm with you, if I'm shadowing on the verge...smoke will send me to 10. After abort...only with O2, if I smoke...immediately comes back. After abort...with imitrex...smoke away!! I wait 5 minutes after O2 to smoke, then I'm good to go, till the next attack. Mast |

Title: Re: Cigarettes... Post by Dave_W on Jan 16th, 2003, 1:08am Man, one of the finest cigarettes of the day is the one right after a 10 lets go of me! I stack the nicotine on top of the after-headache euphoria and just waller in it. No trigger for me, and I can take 'em or leave 'em during an attack. Pain Free Days, friends! Old Dave |

Title: Re: Cigarettes... Post by pimmony on Jan 16th, 2003, 5:34am Here's the thing - I gave up smoking a year before the first cluster hit. I was a heavy smoker, I totally enjoyed it and I never thought I would ever give up - except I had breathing problems. I wondered, during the bout, which lasted eleven weeks, if it would have been easier were I still smoking and my suspicion is yes. I have found no appropriate reward since. Unfortunately, I know I will never smoke again so returning to it is not an option :( |

Title: Re: Cigarettes... Post by cluster0557 on Jan 18th, 2003, 2:14am Hell it is all FM re: Clusters. Last Feb ny Neuro reccomended I quit smoking to help reduce the CH. So like an idiot I did. Normally my cycle stops in Late March or early April. Last spring it kept right on goung thru a couple weeks ago without let up. So if any one tells you stop smoking they will go away they is a nut case. I used to walk and smoke during my worst CH attacks and let me tell you the nicotine helped. bad thing now is since i quit now I can't stand the smell and won't even try to smoke again ( at least this week) |

Title: Re: Cigarettes... Post by BobG on Jan 18th, 2003, 3:26am Roxy, a quote from Bob Kipple (of the Kip scale fame) about smoking and using O2. "Did that once, interesting little fire" But, O2 and smoking is safe if used correctly. Click this thread. http://www.clusterheadaches.com/wwwboard/messages/73339.html brain_cramps, here's some more to add to your string. http://www.clusterheadaches.com/wwwboard/messages/36082.html |

Title: Re: Cigarettes... Post by Mr.Happy on Jan 21st, 2003, 8:26am I hate to add "smoke" to the fire, but since this is popping up both here and in the meds section (again, and again), what the hey...... Smoking during an attack is sort of a no-no due to the use of O2 (See: Big Bang Theory). Any other time, cigarettes are used to mitigate the Totally Justifiable Paranoia that goes along with CH. During Peak Cycle times I smoke so much a 5 gallon bucket is needed as an ash tray. Since the last cycle is over, I've been able to back down to a pack or two a day. That's helped with my wheezing and coughing - hacking up brown tar balls is a LOT easier now. Unlike the rest of you stupid sucks that smoke, _MY_ tobacco company cares about me....and has started including the following helpful note with every pack: http://www.drfeller.com/pix/PhillipMorris.jpg One other little helpful tip for you middle aged guys out there (You know who you are).....I stick to the packs that have the Surgeon General's Warning: Smoking May Complicate Pregnancy. Since I can't get pregnant (AND had my oysters clipped), it's good to know you can take steps to lessen the adverse effects of tobacco use. I smoke and I vote, RJ http://www.drfeller.com/clustology/clchurch.jpg |
