Title: Temperature Rant Post by echo on Jan 14th, 2003, 5:17pm It would really be nice if Kansas would pick a temperature and stick with it for awhile. These swings in degrees are kicking me in the head. At least in Minnesota when it got cold -- it stayed cold! The stadol stone is getting old and the meds are getting low. New corporate insurance again in 2003. Tight ass bastards! There, I feel better getting that off my chest! The MB seems a little slow -- is every one asleep? |

Title: Re: Temperature Rant Post by Karla on Jan 14th, 2003, 5:47pm At least I assume you are getting some cold. You are lucky. Here in WIsconsin were the temps normally dip to 20 or 40 below with the windchills has been around 50 above all winter. We have gotten no snow and it has been quit depressing. I hear your complaint about temps changing that messes with my head to but I just wish ours would change and for the better of our winter. It is still like fall here. The insects will be plentiful and hard to get rid of come summer without a hard freeze. It has only gotten below freezing a few times. Im sad. :'( |

Title: Re: Temperature Rant Post by brain_cramps on Jan 14th, 2003, 5:52pm A few days ago we were enjoying 63(F) and then I had to go to work. 400miles away it was -20(F) (not including wind-chill) when I arrived. WOW, what a wake-up call! Can't wait to get out of here. |

She is takinghte hormone but not the depression pills. Can't force feed her so I'll deal with it. Alcohol is a problem with her, she is much better when she has nothing to drink. She is much better now -- she is out of town. Yeehaw!! and I'm still at work doing year end employee evaluations. Party!!!!! You know -- I'm getting too old for dealing with her crap. But I am truly, desperately, and undenyably in love with that woman! I just cannot picture myself without her in my life. She's out of town and deep in my soul I miss her. I won't sleep well tonight without being able to hear her breathing. I'm a sick man! |

Title: Re: Temperature Rant Post by cerebus on Jan 14th, 2003, 9:31pm I hear ya there! I lived 20 miles south of witchita a few years back and Kansas remains the most inclimate place I've lived yet. Mom stayed, I'll never figure out why. Living in northern Illinois now, not much better here, Today's high was only in the low twenties and even though the wind isn't nearly the caliber it was in Kansas I still gotta warm up my jumblies when I come inside. Here's a question that hopefully will take your mind off the weather: How can a football team be the highest scoring in the entire NFL and NOT make the playoffs? Not intended to be an insult I'm a HUGE chiefs fan and I am still struggling with that one. PFDAN Cerebus |

Title: Re: Temperature Rant Post by echo on Jan 14th, 2003, 9:37pm Cerebus -- no insult taken. I agree with you. It amazes me (ok not really) that they choked getting into the playoffs. They remind me of the Vikings from the Tarkenton years -- so close, yet so far away. Then we look back at Gannon being our Chiefs backup QB and the front office put their money on Garbac, now where the H is that idiot. And we can sit back and watch our ex-2QB march his team to the playoffs. I cannot imagine that Priest Holmes was that big of a presence to the Chiefs offense. Guess he was the offense. Just wait until next year. |

The weather can't make up it's damned mind, and my hubby the AF meteoroligist is catching hell everyday from me. And yes, I continually hear the saying "I'm just the messenger". We had a week of temps in the 50's an this week we are at lows in the -8 F range. Not to mention the 4 feet of snow that tug hill got (we got off lucky and only 2.5 feet) Then it rains, and it half melts, then freezes and makes a great brick layer between the bottom 2 feet and top 2 feet of snow making it impossible to shovel and damn hard work with the snowblower. Then of course the snowdozer comes through and leaves me with a mountain in the front yard! No friggin wonder everyone is getting sick. Can't pick a temp and stay wit it! Just a skiff that fell last night, to cover the skiff we got on the weekend. Makes for interesting driving because the first skiff is now ice. We had a bit of a cold blast these last few days, but we're headed back up to be above zero°C for the next few days. It was -10°C this morning, but this will be the last of the arctic air for us, apparently, for the next few days. Sunday morning, two inches of beautifully, falling snow. No wind, flakes were just huge and falling real slow. It was gorgeous. Course, here in Texas, any snow is pretty. The next 2 days....65 degrees. Now it's Wed. night, the winds blowing 42 mph, which is putting our chill factor about 20 degrees, and they can't decide if it's going to snow again or not. But Sunday, back to the 60's. It is never boring in this state!!! |

Title: Re: Temperature Rant Post by Ueli on Jan 15th, 2003, 8:52pm One thing that surprises me is that people who insist on using this cumbersome Fahrenheit scale are talking about negative temperatures ??? That just cannot be true. Old Mr. Fahrenheit carried his (at his time) newfangled thermometer all over the world. One day in Finnland it was so terribly cold that he was convinced that it couldn't get any colder. Therefore, he defined that as the origin of his scale. From this it follows without doubt: There are no negative values on the Fahrenheit scale. q.e.d. Ueli ;) |
||
Title: Re: Temperature Rant Post by Margi on Jan 15th, 2003, 9:18pm Cool - I finally get to argue with Ueli!! :) We used the Imperial system in Canada until I was in high school - that's when we switched to metric. It does, indeed, go into the negative scale, Mr. Ueli! At -40°F, it is very close to the same temperature as -40°C. I remember many a winter here as a little girl where we would be -40 for weeks on end and I can guaran-dang-tee you it was a very negative experience. 0°C is 32°F, the time when ice freezes - I think maybe it may have been Mr. Celcius who decided that THAT should be the baseline point. ha HA Mr. Smarty Pants!!! ;) |

Seems that one of the Frenchmen who are responsible for it, made a itty bitty error. He was so upset about it that he spent most of his life not telling anyone. This isn't a problem in everyday life, but for the laboratory and other scientific pursuits, that's another matter. Still, Fahrenheit is bizarre by comparison. Fill in the blanks Ueli...... Charlie |

Title: Re: Temperature Rant Post by Ueli on Jan 16th, 2003, 12:24pm On Charlie's request: The metric system is a legacy of the French revolution. Those not affected by it, like the British and Americans, are more than 200 years behind the times and are still wasting lots of efforts to teach a cumbersome, archaic measuring system in school instead of using that time for improving on spelling. ;D In 1793 the meter was defined as 1/10'000'000 (one 10 millions part) of the distance from the pole to the equator. In 1799, after measuring that distance, two notches were engraved in a bar of Platinum, thus defining 1 meter. (Other countries going with modern time received a copy of this arch-meter.) In 1866, by act of the U.S. Congress, the use of the metric system was legalized, but was not made obligatory. In 1892 Michelson measured the red line of Cadmium as having 1'0553'164.13 wavelength per meter. This was henceforth used as a secondary standard. In 1960 the meter was redefined as 1'650'763.73 times the wavelength of the 2p10 - 5d5 emission of Kr86 (Krypton 86). In 1983 the standard was redefined again, this time linking it to the second, by defining the speed of light in vacuum as c = 299'792'458 m/sec. (The second is defined as 9'192'631'770 oscillations of the Cesium 133 atomic clock.) All these new definitions did not change the length of the meter, they made it more accurate. The Cesium clock has an accuracy of 1 part in 1014, much more that the distance between 2 notches can be measured. The inaccuracy Charlie mentions is that modern measurements of the quarter meridian is 10'002.29 km, 0.02% off the value that was intended in 1793. That is of no consequences, since the geographical definition was abandoned long ago. In 1959 the length of the inch was defined as 2.540'000'000 centimeters. One mile (63360 inches) is therefore exactly 1609.344 m. Conclusion: You guys are actually using the metric system, but insist on converting it to weird units (How many can tell if the above number of inches per mile is correct or not?) 'Course, summers were too hot to spend too much time outside- dehydration & bruned soles on our feets- and the pool water would actually get to be body temp- how refreshing! I like moss, I like foggy rain, I like flowers that bloom, rather than fry, I like Portland. .................I miss the beach.................. :-/ |

Not trying to fuel the fire (or dis the French :P) but actually the French surveyors who did the original measurements made some blatant mistakes and then intentionally covered them up. So the original definition of the meter was incorrect. I don't have the reference to their names here at work, but will look it up later tonight. |

Title: Re: Temperature Rant Post by Margi on Jan 16th, 2003, 3:43pm LOL I'm with you, Grant. I just multiplied 5280 x 12 and came up with Ueli's answer. I think he was tryin to trick us. Kinda cool growing up in Canada, though - because we've been taught both systems. I think they did that so we would have a fighting chance at teaching Americans how to do math. ;D |

Title: Re: Temperature Rant Post by Margi on Jan 16th, 2003, 3:55pm No, dear, we taught you how to build a shack on top of a lake, auger a hole through the ice, freeze your asses off and then sit there and drink booze until you can't feel your feet anymore. If you want to call that 'ice fishing', you go right ahead. We'll be the ones, sitting in our easy chairs, ordering pizza with back bacon, eh? ;) |

Title: Re: Temperature Rant Post by Jarvis on Jan 16th, 2003, 10:58pm My,my the subject changed fast. this was about the temperatures. then the metrics vs "normal" measurements, Then the girl gettin one over on the guy, then the guy befuddling the issue with knowledge. Its got to be the weather. whats this have to do with the chinese Tu. .......If we in the us redid our systems of measurement we would have to redo our whole society. Everyone that drove at 60 miles per hr would now be driving 96 kph so naturally they would slow down to 36 mph on the freeways. Before you know it we would be driving on the wrong side of the road too. |

Almost tanning weather up here! 8) Now if we can get it to go up another 15, we might lose some of that white shit :D but should be COLD again by Monday. No mountains around here, so no skiing >:( Still dreaming of Negril... or even Arizona (jonny, are you down there just to find yourself a snowbird?) Off to the beach, Grant |
