Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by Bob P on Jan 13th, 2003, 4:21pm OK. I'll start putting together info for the web page. Cat - let me know when there is a specific date and if there are any kind of group rates at the resort. Need info on travel (airports) and auto rental. Registration fee amount? Do we want all the registrations to go to the Treasurer? I could look at establishing a new account with IBill so people could regiter with a credit card. After that, I'm just gonna sit in the back row making armpit noises with Jonny! |

Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by catlind on Jan 13th, 2003, 5:31pm Bob, date is the weekend of August 2-3. The resort I'm waiting on a proposal from is the riveredge resort. There are several other options but it's a tourist area so alot of them don't even open until May. That's why I wanted to get a jump on this now. I'm hoping I can get some damn good rates for really early booking. They are putting together multiple packages for me, and in case Den and Georgia decide on that weekend, they are assembling a package for that as well. The closest airport is syracuse, it's about an hour and a half drive. Shuttle service will be provided. Northwest and American airlines offer discount airfares for weddings, you fly from anywhere as long as you land at syracuse you get the discount. From there Hertz rental car at the airport has wedding discount fares as well and will have someone there who will assist every person who arrives for the wedding/convention. Yes I'm using and abusing Georgia and Den regardless if they get married here. I've got one speak lined up and am planning on contacting the Dr. running the pepper spray clinical trials that TerryS is participating in at Syracuse to see if she will come and speak. I have a few other speakers I'm going to approach as well. There is boat dockage for anyone who chooses to sail in. That will be part of the package. There is also a dinner/cocktail cruise of the 1000 islands that the hotel will book as part of the package if we want it. When I get the final proposals I will let you know. In the interim, check out http://www.alexbay.org http://www.1000islands.com www.1000islands.com/alexbay Shopping is within walking distance, there is a casino at a nearby resort, lots of things to do as far as tourism and activities, fishing charters, golf courses more per capita than any other area I've lived in. Including one on an island. Ummm...what else, I've got lots of notes for all this just can't think of everything off hand. I've been preparing ahead just in case I got it :) As for the distance to the airport, do not worry, if you don't rent a car, we will provide shuttle service. (actually the hotel will as well for a price) I don't know if there's a registration fee or not. Any and all input is welcome and wanted. Cat |

And I imagine if we tried to charter a plane to land there they'd shoot us down LOL Unfortunately Watertown airport which is closest to the area makes it extremely expensive to fly into. That's why I've already started the works for shuttle service. Cat p.s. is anyone interested in donating anything for door prizes? (hint hint Brassbear ;) ) p.s.s I would be interested in getting a general idea of how many people would plan to attend. www.hotwire.com can get good airfares, as well as the discount airfares, but I have to wait for that until I know what's going on with the resort. |

Elaine did that in Atlanta and she dang near killed herself! :o Are we going to do another event (like our golf tournie last year)? Sure was a lot of fun. Now that Bill and Deb Lovejoy know what we do at an OUCH golf tournie - and they're both such excellent golfers, I'm sure they'd LOVE to organize it. ;) Ooops, was that out loud? |

Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by catlind on Jan 13th, 2003, 7:17pm Margi I will personally provide shuttle service if that's what has to be done. I have other shuttle services lined up though :) One of them being offered from the hotel. Just not sure how expensive that will be. If I do it myself, we can carry 9 people at a time or rent a shuttle van from the MWR on base. Remember I have access to military perks that can come in real handy :) There are lots of golf courses around, although I'm not so sure I'd be the one to organize that LOL. I can never find that stupid white ball! I was kinda thinkin we'd have a gambling fest! LOL There is so much to do in that one small area that is almost all within walking distance. I was also considering a short trip to sacket's harbor to the site of the war of 1812 if anyone was interested. The area has a ton of stuff to do. It's only an hours drive and you are in the adirondack mountains. THere's a water safari there as well. There are just so many things to do it will be hard to pick one! Cat |

Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by Charlie on Jan 13th, 2003, 10:04pm Alexandria Bay is a pretty area with not very good transporatation unless you drive. Hancock (Syracuse) is a nice big airport but the shuttle airlines are horribly expensive from here. It's also quite a trip for shuttles to Alexandria Bay, Cat. It would cost a lot less in the fall and the foliage would be terrific. New York has very nice fall weather kids. I know you have this all set. Just wanted to add this. Charlie |

Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by Riccardo on Jan 14th, 2003, 1:48am HELP NEEDED!!!! any suggestion to join Alexandra bay from JFK in New York? I think that a plane trip don't worth the distance, bt..... which are the transportation from the airport and Alexandra bay? Thanks |
||
Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by Charlie on Jan 14th, 2003, 6:36am Well, Riccardo.....from New York, if you don't have transportation, you have trains, planes, and automobiles to Syracuse...not Sicily...:D Syracuse, New York is probably about 400 km or so. Everything will get you to Syracuse which will have some kind of shuttle to Alexandria Bay. It's a popular resort so there should be no real problem. There will be good train service but US trains leave a lot to be desired. It's harder for me because I live 400 Km or so west, in a small town, which has little of anything. It’s quiet....too quiet. How are the headaches Riccardo? I haven’t heard lately Charlie |
||
Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by catlind on Jan 14th, 2003, 7:03am Charlie, You bring up a great point that fall foliage is astonishing here. I picked August more so people with kids in school wouldn't be hindered. If folks want Sept then we can do that too. Because I'm booking early, there should be some considerable discounts. Don't forget most of the resorts in the area only open in May. October is pretty much the end of the season, so it can go either way. This is everyone's convention ... if Sept is better I can work on that. I'm still waiting for the proposals from the resort so I won't know what rates I'm looking at yet. As for transportation, Alex Bay itself has most everythign you can want in walking distance. Shuttle service is not a problem. LIke I said, I'll do it myself if it comes down to it. Riccardo, Check with Peppermint and ave. Ave is flying into JFK as well and Pep was going to look into transportation from NYC to Upstate. Greyhound buslines come into Watertown. If you are coming from NYC you want to get to watertown, not syracuse. Cat |
||
Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by Peppermint on Jan 14th, 2003, 10:14am Ok... As far as travel from NYC.. or JFK: Jet Blue has a very cheap fair... 44.00 plus tax each way to Syracuse. Travel time is 1 hour. Its about $100.00 round trip. They are a no frills airline but modern, comfortable and I've used them several times - plus you can watch TV on the way. ;D Next - Greyhound buses (Includes Adirondack Trailways and New York Trailways) to Watertown... $67.00 each way but a 7-10 hr. travel time..yikes!! From what I'm seeing... I would likely fly to Syracuse and rent a car from there or take the shuttle to the hotel. Driving 2 hrs after a 1 hr plane ride beats the alternative. Of course.... coordinating the connections is key. Websites to look at: www.greyhound.com (buses) www.amtrak.com (trains) www.jetblue.com (planes) Feel free to email me if you like. Pep |
||
Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by catlind on Jan 14th, 2003, 10:18am Thanks so much Pep for looking into the airfares from NYC to Syracuse. A bus trip would likely be horrendous after an international flight, and there's no train station in watertown so if you took the train you'd have to go to syracuse anyway. Cat |
||
Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by Peppermint on Jan 14th, 2003, 10:46am Forgot..... Amtrak train in a regular seat: 148.00 round trip...5 hours travel time. Flying NY to Syracuse and hopping the shuttle or a rental car looks really good. |
||
Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by Bob P on Jan 14th, 2003, 1:04pm I vote for the Fall foliage! At the first convention we picked the middle of summer because someone complained about not having any way to come during thier kids school. Ya know what. It didn't matter. The person didn't even come. The rest that did had to swelter through Las Vegas in July. 90-95% of the attendees don't have any childcare problems. I think you should pick the season that caters to the majority. This may sound kind of tough but tough! |
||
Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by Margi on Jan 14th, 2003, 1:08pm I'm surprised at you, Bob. I figured you'd WANT to be there during bikini season. Especially if it meant seeing Drummer in a Speedo. I know that's Hub's motivation for attending... I'm voting for the August date, just to be difficult. ;) |
||
Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by catlind on Jan 14th, 2003, 1:15pm Well Bob, you certainly don't have to worry about heat in Alex BAy LOL. We do get warm weather, but August in Alex Bay, right on the water, can be cool. September can be downright cold. I've been on a cruise through the islands in July that we all had to wear sweats and jackets to. Keep in mind that being on the water is always cooler than being inland....specially a desert LOL Until I get the rates from the hotel I'm not going to change the date. If the rates in Aug are too high then I will inquire as to Sept rates. Remember, most folks have vacation time in the summer months, not in september. Regardless, You can please some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time, but never all of the people all of the time. Cat |

Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by Jabeen on Jan 14th, 2003, 2:25pm Hi! The location looks gorgeous- I have a question..about how many people generally attend? Has it grown each year? Do people bring spouses or come single? Just curious-thanks. |

Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by Bob P on Jan 14th, 2003, 3:23pm They come single, they come with their spouse, they come with their entire family. 1st year 20+ attendees. 2nd year 30+ last year 40+ I'm betting around 75 at this one. |

It's nice but as my relatives reminded me, it's a big tourist trap. Gets the Island crowd, Adirondack crowd and some New York City folk who are tired of Saratoga and New England Bikinis on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence.....a novelty :-/ . Sorry guys. Charlie |

Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by catlind on Jan 15th, 2003, 8:48am I think Charlie wants to have the convention at his house ;) As it turns out, talk about coinkidink, The Pine Tree Point resort that is my first choice for the convention, called me today to put together the proposal. Guess what? She's a CLUSTERHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She did mention that August is THE biggest month in Alex bay and that she may be able to get us much better rates if we backed it up to the last weekend in July. I will firm up dates as soon as I have my proposals. If it means less cost for the resort, then I will definitely be changing to July, I do not want this to be an expensive convention for everyone. Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by catlind on Jan 16th, 2003, 9:32am As much as I would like to accomadate everyone in the Fall, that may completely out of the question. Clark is up for a PCS (Permanent Change of Station) and it will be rather difficult for me to host a convention in Alexandria Bay from Colorado. The dates right now are either Aug 2-3 or July 19th weekend depending on my proposals from the hotel. The Pine Tree Point Resort that is my first pick is mostly secluded from the crowds. You can walk down to all the shops and tourist stuff, but it's outon a point by itself. We fly in there pretty frequently in the summer. I can give you prices for a medium twin aircraft that will seat 6, a turbo-prop that will seat 8 or a small jet that will also seat 8. All of these prices will be wholesale. It isn't cheap but if you can fill the planes up it might work for you. You can e-mail me at my work address - CLowthian@Carlisleair.com if you are interested. We can fly out of Islip or Farmingdale on Long Island, White Plains in Westchester and either Portsmouth, NH or Norwood, Mass. in New England. All of the different aircraft are based at these airports so you wouldn't have to pay for any repositioning. I can also get you prices on aircraft from other parts of the country (wholesale) if anyone else is interested. Chris L |

Title: Re: OUCH 2003 Convention Post by catlind on Jan 21st, 2003, 4:03pm Yes Ann there is mooring and dockage at the resort. This is where things stand so far, and I will call the committee to convene a meeting probably the end of this week or next to firm up details: The convention will be held the weekend of July 19th as the August prices were WAY out of my pocket book range, and they all have weddings booked in Aug and couldn't guarantee 50 rooms or a banquet room. Pine Tree Point can accomodate us on all fronts, I spoke with Melissa again today, and we are going to work out details for things like docking and such after I firm up numbers. The resort offers shuttle service from the airport, but it's expensive. Melissa told me to tell everyone who is flying in to fly from their destination straight into Watertown and not Syracuse. You would probably have a stop over in philadelphia. She is going to work with me on getting us a good rate for the shuttle service either way. Don't forget, she's a cluster head, she's definitely on our side and would like to attend the speakers. She said the airline that she thought flew into Watertown was United, so when you check your flights, be sure to check for a flight into Watertown. You may pay a little more but it will beat having to be shuttled from Syracuse. Bob, you mentioned the registration fees, the resort needs $500 deposit, and as was the fee for the other conventions, it will be a $75 fee. Will provide all details as things get sorted out after the committee meets. Cat |
