Title: Protect your online images with digital watermark
Post by SommelierCH on Jan 12th, 2003, 1:06pm
A digital watermark, is a (pretty much) proof positive sign of ownership in this digital age where anyone can rip off a picture on the net. It incorporates a personal signature of sorts, hidden between the 1’s and 0’s. It can only be see with a “digital watermark reader”, just like Acrobat Reader. Digimark, (here is the link,  http://www.digimarc.com/  is the mother ship of this technology. They have been around and lasted, that’s very important when dealing with proof of ownership. I don’t think I’ve read anything about it being binding legal evidence, but I haven’t heard of any thing better. I personally have not used a digital watermark, but I always tell artists that I know, who post their work online to do it. I guess it works, haven’t heard any bad stories about people using it, and hundreds of stories about personal works being ripped off. On top of it all, when that happens, there is very little recourse, because digital media (the online part, not the original works like a sculpture, but the digital picture of it) is so elusive and manipulable.

The Basic 1yr. rate starts at $49 for 1-99 images. If you go deeper in the site there might be some single use freebees.

Perhaps the people who are going to be showing their work online in the Cluster-Arts, Crafts & Photography Gallery, could chip in for a $49 1yr subscription, which covers 99 images. However, once you sign up for a digital watermark, you might not be able to change it, from person to person. But, it is an option for the budget minded.

David J.
