My daughter is in elementary school. So far this year, they have learned about Valentines day, mother's day, groundhogs day, St Patrick's day and Cinco de Mayo. They even spent the entire month of February (Black History Month) doing an in-depth study of Mexico.

But, there was no mention AT ALL about Memorial day. Dianan didn't even know there was no school monday, let alone know the reason why.

WTF?

I cannot think of one politically correct, twisted reason why. This country would not exist were it not for all the men and women who served and sacrificed for our freedom.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971).

In 1915, inspired by the poem "In Flanders Fields," Moina Michael replied with her own poem:

We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.

There are currently 1800 World War II Veterans dying every day. It is estimated that 2007 or 2008 will be the pinnacle of burials in Military Cemeteries due to the age of World War II vets.

Please don't forget these brave men and women who served our country and died for it, and those who came back to make this the greatest country on Earth. Give thanks and enjoy your weekend, courtesy of a HERO.

I can't speak for Dianan's school and this is a very lame excuse but at my schools we are winding down the year. Every day something out of the ordinary is going on, field days, field trips, band concerts, ect. The kids are pretty wiped out from excess testing and really aren't listening. I told one of my students on Friday I would see them Tuesday because they had no school Monday and they said "Why?" We did an incredible program for Veteran's Day. Right now, it's sadfully about the beach and picnics!

Charlotte I understand your point completely however - all those things wouldn't be happening if others hadn't fought for our freedom.

If kids are wiped out from excess testing even more reason for a "fun" educational thing about their country.

This isn't directed at you in the least but it does seem that "Others" can do everything.

Others can fight for our freedom.
Others can lobby congress (or any government)
Others can do what ever we don't want to and what's more OTHERS SHOULD

Cos "we're" too bloody busy...

However, where does it say this is all down to schools? Why aren't these kids learning about this AT HOME???

I totally agree with you Helen. The program we did for Veteran's Day was so good. We had several speakers come in and talk with and answer questions from the kids. For the primaries the kids had to research the canidates and they all took roles from Obama's wife to Secret service to the canidates and had a mock election with the kids. By the way Obama and McCain won.

My father is a retired Army officer and a graduate of West Point. He did a flag ceremony with the Jr High School Lisa went with some other service men last Friday. This should be done more often with all of the kids. I guess growing up as an army brat on military posts, I've always understood and appreciated this holiday. Maybe next year we can plan something different.

Well, I for one think it's a shame that the schools don't teach it any more.

This weekend I've had calls from two old "Army Buddies" and we did reminiss (sp) about it (of course we're old enough to do that). We laughed about our father's war stories of WW11 and who's father "really" won the war single handed (I know mine did) and the time we spent together (I was an Army wife, but we were as much a part of it as the guys were).

Yes, this is a time we NEED to remember those to made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can live in freedom. Even if we take it for granted....

Memorial day is one hell of a lot more important than Valentines or Ground-hogs day, that's for sure.

Brian...I too, would be at my daughters school asking that question. I know she's very young but I hope that you and her had a sit-down and you explained what this day really means.

Yup, we did.
We were in the car coming home when i asked her about it and she said she didnt know anything about it. So, we started talking about it until we pulled into the driveway. Then, we just sat in the car for several more minutes as we talked about it in the driveway.
We also got a chance to talk about english root words, such as memory - memorial - remember.

She enjoyed the talk so much, I even got a "Oh my god Daddy, you know EVERYTHING!!!".........so that was cool.

Coming from the north 20+ years ago I've encountered some ambivalence about Memorial Day among the hardcore "southerners" who for some small sects in the redneck tribes believed it was a "yankee holiday"

As recently as last year.
