Title: Stimulus Rebates have been coming for a week...
Post by Redd on May 9th, 2008, 7:35am
So how many have gotten theirs, and are you doing what yout hought you'd do with it?   Are you saving, spending or simply paying off bills?

Mine was deposited this morning, and I'm second guessing what I thought I was going to do with it.

Not sure if I want to have a once over on the Aztek, or if I should finally invest in a digital ready TV.

I could just save it as I first intended.

What are the rest of you doing now that you actually have your rebate?

I got mine and its actually making it possible for me to relax a bit about having the Summer off that 1500 will pay my bills for the month of August...

Mothers day is Sunday though and Dave said I am not his mother... so I might go buy myself a present too... I could use a new pair of jeans that make me feel sexy... it takes very little to make me happy...

at any rate... enjoy and remember we will probably have to claim it next year...

Got ours on Tuesday.  $500 went to pay back my Grandma and $1300 is sitting in Jesse's account.  Dunno what's gonna happen to it. :-/

Let me ask this.

Would anyone change their minds about tapping into this "found money" if businesses were promoting deals and specials to intice you to come in and spend that cash?

What would it take for any of you to change your plans for this money.

Also, would having bills paid off with this money help you feel more able to take advantage of the deals businesses would be offering?

Money is money. I'd rather have the Feds write this kind of savings into the tax code so everybody can keep more of their own money all the time.

When a "windfall" comes in, it's treated like any other money - expenses are prioritized. In our case, paying off some debt. I'm not sure my feelings really come into play.

We spent 400.00 on "window treatments", 250.00 on a night out of dancing and prime rib brunch the next day and 400.00 on my golf club membership.

The ol wealth re-distribution play.....

From a Democrat it's called socializm.
From a Republican it's called stimulus.

And now you know why I maintain there's not a dime's worth of difference between the two.

My first thought too but took care of it already, checks not here yet.  Mostly bills.

Yes, the ability of words to frame an event with rhetoric and persuasion.  Pro-choice and pro-life, redistribution versus confiscation, invading versus liberating.  Cautious public health for saving the lives of 200 out of 600 versus risk restraint because it's framed as resulting in the death of 400 out of 600.

Until we get to Woody Allen in "Play It Again Sam".  Sam gets roughed up by bikers and tells his friends, "I snapped my chin down on some guy's fist and hit another one on the knee with my nose."     ;)

The reason I'm asking this, is that the Manager here has put together "Tax Stimulus" advertising packages for our advertizers to intice the consumer to spend.

My ethical nature hits a brick wall with this promotion.  Tight economy, most all retail businesses are seeing drastic decline in consumer spending so the business's budgets are tighter than usual.

If, as most national reports are indicateing, the stimulus rebates are overwhelmingly going into savings or to pay down debt, I don't think I'm doing my customers an service at all to soak them out of additional advertising when it's unlikely they will see much if any return on their investment.

Actually, catchy sales ads could be a good idea.  I usually set apart a small portion for buying.  The McDonalds sign has double Big Macs just for the occasion chipping dollars away.  Items up to a hundred bucks could be convincing, or that plumbing that needed to be done, repair work, maybe a new washing machine.

Next Friday the 16th we should get our money.  We would love to save it and take a trip, we would love to pay off a bill or two with it, but it looks like we have to buy about 5000 worth of new windows and have them installed.  That will cost a pretty penny or two.

As far as advertising to try to get people to spend there money there and offering specials and discounts sounds good to me.  But I have a feeling no matter what the advertisment is that peoples money will go where it is needed most.

Well, then just post the manager's name and address and we'll send him/her a bill for our research and development fees. ;;D

I still haven't seen this check but when it comes it will go right into my savings accounts to replenish that "rainy day" fund. It sure was as a stormy year. I'd like to spend it but just am not comfortable with the economy the way it is.

Not me.......

Unexpected need for an item. Example......if my hot water heater were to fail.

No....savings and debt reduction are my primary uses for this cash.

Hope this helps....

Yes Bill, it does. Thank you.

I don't know of a better cross section of people to ask. As trying to form a formal poll is far too time consuming.

Just because my area is expecting $21 Million in Stimulus dollars (according to the most recent census poll) doesn't mean that is all going to be expendable income dollars.

Sure I can position the promotion as a means of getting their "slice of a 21 million dollar pie", but how much would they trust me after they invested more than they saw in profits over that time period?

Then they would have to cut back even farther on their marketing budget to cover the loss, and I've shot myself in the foot for the next 3-6 months.

Bill gives a good picture, having it for the unexpected.  But if buying, needs that have been put off, right up to a set of tires maybe.  Bills might be a lion's share for most though.

You are doing the job your company pays you to do.

You are not your customer's investment adviser.  Besides, advertising is not an investment, it's a cost of doing business.  Let their people worry about how to spend their money. . . .and be glad they are spending their money with you. :)

We are adding to the layer of insulation in the attic and thinking about investing some in bee hives.  The rest goes into the general fund, no telling where it goes.

It's determined by your social security number:

I don't get one yet. I filed for an extension on my taxes.

Getting into business= 10 minutes and $20.00
Getting out= 3 years, your first born and a lot of money :-/

But when I do get it, I'll be hitting the Pay Pal button below!

One thing I noticed after clicking the link Mosaicwench provided, the "pie pieces" are dispersed over a two month period.  Mine is due during the week ending June 27th.  The total dollars received by your ad readers will arrive as a percentage of the whole pie per week.
If ads run on a monthly basis, a two-month span would be required to encompass enticing the total "pie" out there, with perhaps little extra return on a weekly basis to be seen for the extra advertising, making your last sentence above a consideration.

I bought a battery operated shower from Cabela's, a 2 room privacy shower shelter & Cosco play yard that fits into the dinette space in our camper from KMart (both on sale now). [smiley=smug.gif]
