I don't know anything about birds, but early evening yesterday I started to hear banging noises outside my bedroom window. When I looked it was a bird flying and hitting my window. I thought it was a woodpecker, but Gordon said it was a Robin - it's a big bird and woodpeckers are small???? I think.

Anyway, this lasted all night and it started nice and early today around 8 am. It's not doing it now probably because it's pouring outside. But what the heck is this bird doing? Trying to get it in, what? I'm confused.

I'm afraid he's going to break my window and kill itself in the process. Do any bird lovers out there have any clue? Like I said, it flies straight into my window, then it flies away a bit uncoordinated, only to do it again.

Probably a male which sees its reflection as another bird and a threat. Try changing the lighting so the outside of the window no longer acts as a mirror.

Maybe he sees his reflection in your window?

Are there any lights outside at night that are close to your bedroom window?

A few years ago a small sparrow was doing the same thing to the side mirror of my Jeep. He would bang against it so hard that I thought he was going to smash the mirror so I put a small white plastic bag over it and secured it with a rubber band so he couldn't see his reflection.

Didn't look great but it saved my mirror and hopefully a few nasty headaches for the bird.

Brian is right Mooch. Take cardboard and place it in the window during the day until mating season is over.

He sees his reflection and thinks he's defending his territory from another male. That's why they call them "bird brains", LOL. He probably won't stop until his hormones have slowed or he knocks himself silly. One year, I watched a rufus sided towee not only attack his reflection for weeks, but then when his babies hatched, he started teaching his kid to attack the reflections in my chrome hubcaps. Nature is a hoot. :D

I have a light for the front entrance, but that's usually off unless I'm letting the dog out or am expecting someone. So I think it was off when it started yesterday evening...I think.

Either that or leave the outside light on as well. Alternatively, lace curtains outside the window will stop the reflection he sees while not disturbing your night reading or whatever it is you need the bed-side lamp for.

He's not going to hurt himself, but it can be bloody annoying.

I remember seeing a bird do that at my grandfather's house when I was a kid--it would fly into his picture window and kinda knock itself out--my impression at the time was that it just didn't "get" what the window was--like I don't know how much of a memory or reason they have--so it just thought it could fly on through--didn't get why it was being stopped. Well, that's what I thought when I was a kid.

Our neighbors had a robin doing this last year at their back door for days on end. I think it finally knocked itself out.

My other neighbor called me this morning and told me that a chickadee was attacking a mosaic I had made her. It has mirror tiles and the bird kept pecking at it's reflection.

Birdbrain ain't just a useless phrase.

LMAO - that's messed up Chewy - now there's a crazy movie for you - "The Birds"...scary

Well, I put cardboard on my window - inside - because to get outside I have to climb to the roof of the second floor and we don't have a ladder. It seems to have worked. He still pecked for about 5 minutes and I haven't heard him since (perhaps he knocked himself out). The cardboard just fell - have to retape it... :P

All you need to do is buy a cheap rubber snake from the toy store and leave it on the windowsill, works every time!
