Title: CH Photographer's Club?
Post by Argonaut on Apr 28th, 2008, 7:54am
I've noticed quite a few photography threads and it seems there are several photographers around. I thought maybe we can introduce ourselves and offer some tips - I certainly would love some help on perspectives and working with dim lighting!

I'm a newbie photographer and just recently bought a Sony a350 DSLR. It came with two lenses - 18-55mm and 55-200mm. I think it's a great camera and very user-friendly, plus it is compatible with A-mount Minolta lenses [as Sony bought Minolta].

Last week, I also bought a Minolta 50mm 1.7f lens for a bargain because the pawn shop had no idea about equipment ;;D

Anyways, if anyone wants to see some photos, they are on my website: cissi.id.au (http://cissi.id.au). I'm planning on revamping the site very soon, once I find some time.

I also took some photos of a local music event called In The Pines and the photos are on the organiser's gallery (http://rtrfm.com.au/gallery/28/).

Looking forward to seeing other people's galleries!

Argonaut, I love your pics of the band(s)! :D

I love taking pictures, would even like to do baby, senior & family portraits, but I just don't have the time!  Perhaps when my youngest begins school I can then focus on it. :-/

I can't afford an SLR, but I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-H7 that I just LOVE!

Wow! I love the nature photos. They are awesome.

I would love to get into photography. I just have a lot of other things going on. However, would love to share photos and learn from others.

I know nothing techie about cameras, but will always have a go!

I call it my "Art as Therapy" program.

Being able to take pictures and share them with my friends makes me feel better after all the pain.
That's why I do it.  It brings me back to feeling human.

This is the Linn Cove Viaduct in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Linville, NC  (the most complicated concrete bridge ever built, snaking around boulder-strewn Linn Cove in a sweeping "S" curve.)

& I am thankful for all of you and the kindness you have all shown me over the last few years.

right now I use an Olympus Stylus 1000 & a Sony DSC-P200.  My LeicaFlex SL has gone mothballed....

Thanks for the compliments, much appreciated!

@Melissa: I actually find it hard to do portraits because I feel rather self-conscious  ;;D I find it easier to take photos of people while they are in the midst of a spontaneous act.

Sony makes some good point and shooters :D

@Emily: I'm not technical either; most of my knowledge has been from experimenting myself. I also have a very good friend who has been kindly teaching me some of the nuances of photography [such as depth of field] but it's all about practical experience.

@aloneuk: How do you like the Finepix? Am also envious that you have a fisheye lens. That's next on my list, and then a 100m macro. I think a fisheye lens would be very interesting for live band photography.

I love doing macro work; it makes me aware of aspects of an object that I would otherwise never have noticed.

@vig: I really like the detail on the rock in the foreground - it's very striking and vivid. I also like how you captured the contrast between the whiteness of the rock and the darker background.

How are Olympus cameras? I had considered getting one when I was researching my options.

As always, I am fashionably late  ;;D.  Vig, I just love your foot!  I've tried to take a pic of my foot, but I just can't get it to cooperate.

Folks, it doesn't mattter what you shoot, who you shoot or how you shoot, what matters is that you are enjoying yourself when you do.

I don't do portraits, don't like shooting portraits.  I'm more of a nature/event photographer.

I shoot with a Canon DSLR 350D (wouldn't mind having the new 450 D, but that's not in my budget right now, would prefer new lends anyway).  Besides the lens that came with the camera (18-55 mm), have a 50 mm macro and 75-300 telephoto/zoom, plus flash and assorted geegaws that I use.

The whole family uses nothing but Canon, what can I say  ;) (daughter inherited my old 300D and Jimbo has a P&S that he's having a blast with).

If you don't have a decent photoshop program, Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 is really good for the price, costs about $100.00.

I was fairly keen on getting the EOS450D, but I was actually disappointed once I tried one. The live view is fairly disappointing and I didn't find it ergonomic.

I like the Canon EOS40D; I've used one occasionally at work and is a great camera. Bit expensive, though :(

What is a good beginner camera that is more manual?  I want to take some pictures that require speed (the hummingbirds outside the window) and selective focus etc.  make it cost effective too as I am in the middle of a job crisis....yikes!

ps.  Great foot and what kind of shoe is that?

Title: Re: CH Photographer's Club?

@kayarr: If you're looking for a point-and-shooter camera where you can adjust manually the shutter speeds and apertures, I'd look at the Canon Powershot series, or the Canon SX100. I used the Canon SX100 before I got my DSLR and it's a very good camera :)

@delta: I really like your photo of the trees in the fog - very evocative.

Kayarr,
You can also buy used if you want to save some money.  Adorama sells used equipment.  The only *down* side to a P&S is that you can't change lens in most cases.  You can still get  a Canon 350D for about $470.00 with a kit lens.

http://www.adorama.com/

Ritz camera runs some pretty good sales.  Office Depot carries Canon.  B&H sometimes has good deals.

I've had good luck ordering from the big stores in New York City. When I purchased the Sony, I saved 200 bucks over the best price I could find locally. Here's a place to start..... http://www.ibuydigital.com/

You can also check Price Watch and Price Grabber. Just beware of gray market sellers....

I someday will own a full size camera with a kick-ass lens, but because we take our camera's with us biking we opted for these two camera's because they can take some abuse.

We bought this one two years ago.
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b8db29b3127ccea97d9900940900000026101AZtGrZu5asU

It worked out so well we then bought the improved version of it.
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b8db29b3127ccea97d990e940700000026101AZtGrZu5asU

All our pics and video were done with these two cameras and we are very happy with them, not too expensive and very tough.

Charlie, my Canon SD450 fell off a log and down a rock to come to rest in the sand as I was attempting to take a pic of myself using the timer while biking one day solo.. :(

Camera never missed a beat. We just recently bought the Canon SD1000 for $180.00 and it is a better camera than our SD450.

I just wanted to add a neat little accessory we bought about a month ago. It is called the " Joby gorillapod" and is very handy for when we go biking. This pod will mount on any surface, tree branch, or whatever we choose in the wilderness. 8)

Will the Joby gorillapod work with a heavier camera and lens?  I saw one in my last issue of PhotoPlus, but didn't pay much attention~camera bag is already getting full.

I bought some more filters the other day and hopefully the weather will cooperate and I can get out and take some  pictures!

Jimbo and I will be heading to south Louisiana this coming weekend so will have pictures of that trip.

I just put my hand on the gorillapod and pushed down on it fairly hard and it never folded on me or moved.

I do not see why it wouldn't hold a larger camera but do not have one to try. Vig has a larger camera and one of these pods, so maybe he will know.

Here is a strange one from the Cayman Islands. Note that the green palm leaves are white and the blue sky is black but the white clouds remain white. I used Konica 720Nm IR film with a red 25A filter and developed the negatives and prints myself. The lighthouse print is so sharp you can actually see the cracks of the bricks in the 8"x10" print. Also note that the picture of the lighthouse was taken before they moved it.

Hi Tom,

I recall that you and Kirk are both ex-Coastie and there may others here too.

I’ve been really fortunate to make friends with surfmen all over D11 and D13. The instructors at the NMLB School at Cape D are super.

As a civilian photographer, I’m not allowed to go underway during SAR and training missions so all of my images were officially shot from shore  ;). (Those Mustang survival suits are really uncomfortable......)

The 47's are really high tech but I'm a huge fan of the Intrepid class 52's - that's an MLB! I've spent some time aboard some WPB 87's but my heart is in the 44, 47 and 52 MLB's.

What was your duty?

My latest shots from the beach. (or maybe was it a helo?)  ;)

Thanks Shawn,

Yeah, Bob and I are waaay overdue for a dinner, but it's been my fault - not his.

Marc you make me flinch from the screen expecting the spray to hit me. It's so real and the light on that water is just invigorating. I truly feel like this is a day at the beach! I'm a real "Sea" person, nothing makes me feel as alive as ocean's do. I can hear the boats creak, hear seagulls and waves crashing in my ears and I swear I can smell the salty air. This is as good as being there and I rarely feel like that from photo's. National Geographic does that to me too though I have to admit!

Along with Antelope Canyon those pics are somewhere I now long to go.

You've made my day. I could sit here all day surrounded by them and just feeling at peace. That's an incredible gift to give someone, Thank you

Helen,

Better enjoy those pics while you can... I'm having Marc picked up for violating the 'keep this place a secret' law.  We've kept it a secret this long, pictures like that could bring, you know, tourists.  ewwwww.  'Cept for you, of course.

Marc,

Watch yer back.  Texas will extradite to California (only because we have the death penalty).  :P  BTW, I'm no photographer... that jellyfish was a lucky shot.  You, my friend, are a photographer.  I just own a camera.

We should all hook up for a dinner or something before you leave town.  I'm moving to Boston eventually too.

Here's that jellyfish shot... it's actually a piece of art by Richard Satava.

http://www.nunleys.com/jellyfish.jpg

and another one that includes a reflection of my son standing there looking amazed.  Taken at the Monterey Aquarium, this image is a crappy scan of a regular film shot I took, but you get the idea.

I served @ Station Annapolis, MD, MotorLifeBoat [MLB] Station Hatteras Inlet Hatteras, NC , and USCGC (WHEC-723) RUSH when she tied up @ Alameda, CA. Spent a lot of time in the Bering Sea running the small boat off the cutter. Deadliest Catch brings back a LOT of memories of seas I've been in. Too many, sometimes.
I liked the 44 footer; very dependable but slow. 8 knots no matter what the seas. We had a 30' SRB [Surf Rescue Boat] for a while and broke her. She looked like an Adidas tennis shoe. All engine and fiberglass but could she rocket through the waves. We routinely got her airbourne on "training sorties".

You folks are too kind – I just run on pure luck.

As I’ve already said, some of mine may be different that others but each image has a beauty of its own.  Sure, sharpness and clarity can help an image, but the emotive value of the shot is most important. Look at all of the great captures displayed in this thread . None of my work could possibly measure up to how some of them make you feel when you see them.

Go back and look at Mel’s shots of the baby’s feet in the adult hands, or Charlotte’s orchard in bloom, or Shawns “reflection” shot, or the power displayed in Pep’s waterfalls, or any one of a dozens of images that Vig has been posting for years - and soo many other people's work too. Slow down and look at each one. How do they make you feel? That’s the point, they are more the pretty pictures!

Tom,
Based on stories I’ve heard, the Bering Sea can be the stuff nightmares are made of.  The 44’s are still the favorite of the “old pro” Surfmen that I’ve met for exactly the reason you mentioned – they just keep on moving regardless of the conditions. And with a few notable exceptions, they would bring you home.

Shawn,
That’s a great shot of Ragged Point from the North. It's hard to capture the immensity of the cliffs. I love the hike down the stairs/path to the little beach below. On weekdays, you can have all to yourself all day long – just don’t do it when the swell is up. Neat shot!

Delta,
Your images are good example of what I was saying. I could never get those shots here, and you have good informative comments to go with your images in the Mini Vacation thread. Now that’s cool!

Title: Re: CH Photographer's Club?
Post by Marc on May 23rd, 2008, 1:05am
Helen,

You are far too generous with your comments. I'm a basic camera hack compared to some of the guys I shoot with.

Carolyn,

I shoot with a variety of stuff. I use a 3MP Fuji 602 a LOT, a 6MP Nikon D70, a 10MP D200 and my old film cameras from the 70’s – 80’s.  Mostly I use my old film camera lenses. I don’t see a big improvement in the images I get from each camera - it’s all about the light.  Notice that I rarely shoot during the mid-day sun.

When I HAVE to shoot in harsh light, I use a lot of flash to balance the light, like this one. You can see that the sun was intense on her side away from the camera. Without some form of fill light, her side facing me was in deep shade. I know that this can be “fixed” in software, but I strongly believe in getting it right in the camera because I think it looks better.

Marc,
That's a nice collection of cameras you have (especially that Nikon D200).  I have a friend who is a Nikon shooter~he works as a photographer for Dillards.

I agree about post processing and I do try not to over use it, but considering my actual knowledge of photography is *slim*, it does come in handy.  I am growing my abilities though and I've been lucky to have some friends (not the guy with Dillards, he's a *professional* who didn't have time for a newbie) who have been really encouraging about my hobby.

I have fun and that's what counts.

It's funny, but my best work (defined by most published) is from my lower level cameras. I have a billboard image up right now with 3 images on it. One is a 3MP, one is a 6MP image. You cannot tell which is which. It's all about the light.........

How aobut the photographers of CH putting together a book and adding it to the auction for next years convention?  It really doesn't cost that much to have a book made.

BLURB does an excellent job and has a tutorial that will help you *walk through* putting the book together.  The books are excellent quality.  I have one book of theirs that I bought last year~photographs from members of the Canon forum that I'm a member of and I'm waiting with baited breath for the next one (ESPECIALLY, since I have a photograph in the book).

Helen, Marc really is far too modest.  You should see some of the pics he has posted over on calouch in the past.  They are truly awesome...just like the one's he shown here.

Marc, Light might be an important factor, but one has to have an eye for things like this as well as knowing what camera, lens setting etc.   A "hack"   you are not. !!!!!!!
