I thought I trained the kids to that job, but alas...  I haven't worn a pair of sock that wasn't self matched at the time of need from the sock basket...(shhhh...and sometimes I still wear mis-matched socks because it was too dark)

The kid doesn't match up her socks.  I don't think she has a single pair of matched socks.

Personally, I think the mates to all her mismatched socks have simply vanished into the black maw of her lair--but she says she does it deliberately because she likes to wear them that way.  ::)

Edit to add:

BTW, on the opposite end of the spectrum, I once knew a guy who was so OCD that he believed that there were right and left socks.  He got quite upset when I disagreed.

Best,

George

I am doing laundry right now and I just bet there will be one sock missing when I am done.  :-/

The dryer is done, time to check! ::)

I put six pair of socks in the washer and then into the dryer.

I now have four pair of socks and two single unmatched socks.

I am convinced that there is a black hole in my dryer.

Does anybody remember Todd? (Where the heck is he?)

He had a solution to avoid the tedious chore of sorting out matching socks: Before throwing the dirty socks into the laundry hamper he fasten them together with a safety pin.

I always miss socks somewhere between the washer and the drier...I guess I should start looking behind those machines... they have not been moved since they were connected, who knows what is behind..maybe all my lost socks  ;)

Gee, I wonder what would have happened if I had pinned my ex-husband to one of the single socks?  Poof????

Should have tried it for my ex mother-in-law, too.

Hmmmmm.....I might be on to something here?

I just folded all of my whites and matched up my socks but there is a navy blue sock that came out of nowhere! I think Cyn, that when they disappear, they just may come back. They are hiding lurking inthe dryer waiting for the right time to reappear!

I swear Mel, you just cracked me up.

Damn...i'm jealous...I have about 5 socks that are missing their partner.  At this point I'm thinking they it's legal separation and they don't want to match up again.  :P

Socks don't really like feet, so they cling to the inner circle of the top of the washer during the last spin.

Then the next time you wash you end up with an extra sock.  And the cycle starts again next time you wash.

I used to have nothing but Burlington OTC socks with the green or blue stripe at the toes.  I wasn't fussy about matching the blue or green stripes. Damn, I wish I could find more of them.

All seriousness aside, I have brown/blue/black socks that get along fine.  http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/yoyo.gif

A few hints about socks:

I only buy 100% cotton socks ... keeps my feet from stinking so bad that I would pass out from the smell when I took my shoes/sneakers off ...

When I buy socks, I buy about a dozen or two dozen at a time, of the same style, so that it is easier to match them up ...

When you have an odd sock, or one that is left of a pair, due to holes, etc, did you know that they make EXCELLENT rags?  Ya can stick your hand right in it, and use it then!  I love sock rags!

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Just an idea here ... but MAYBE there is a time warp, or something, so that when one sock goes missing from MY dryer, it shows up in someone else's dryer, and vice versa?  Maybe we all ought to all bring our odd socks to the next convention, and try to make pairs again?

Sometimes, I end up with one sock, and I hold onto it. Sometimes the other one will show up, and once in awhile, it doesn't. And if one had a hole in it, and I had others that matched, I'd throw out the one with a hole in it, then end up with one sock not matching, so now, if one goes, the pair goes, so I'm not looking for it, or waiting around, wondering if I threw it out...  ::)

Although, your idea, Chuck, is good. Make rags out of them. I can think of lots of uses for them, now that you mention it.

About 99 per cent of my socks are black. I deliberately bought just black socks from the very same store and the very same brand to able to avoid mismatching them. But, still, I end up with several socks with the wrong pair! ;;D

I too think Chuck is on to something with the time warp thing.  I've come up with socks in the baskets that I KNOW don't belong to me or the offspring.  And sometimes undies too...

Those get tossed right in the trash.

About 3 months ago I had to buy a new washing machine. When my Son and I carried out the old one and finally got it outside, we tipped it over to slide it throught the snow to put by the curb. When I walked back into the house past the spot where we tipped it, Lo and Behold there were 3 socks laying there!

My theory is that some of the socks don't like the spin cycle and they crawl over the top rim of the drum and hide. :D

So how many of us are going to go home and move our dyers? I know I am. But then again what will I do with the MIA socks that I have learned to live without. Oh yeah, puppets and rags ;) I teach elementary art so everyone can send me your sock singles. Imagine all of the puppets I could make!

Then again, I find a sock or two hiding under the piles of lint around the dryer..... :o

If you fill an old one full of quarters, it makes a good self-defensive device.

There is nothing quite so satisfactory,
Nor quite so satisfyingly scratchy,
As my odd woolen willy warmer
On a frosty morning.

O, you might say--why that is nothing
But a stripe'd sock conscripted
To serve an intimate duty for which
It was never intended.

A desolate dryer refugee,
Poignant in its solitude,
Secluded now in a secret place,
Where it keeps my willy warm.

But I say that my lovely woolen warmer
Is a talisman that someone cares
That my willy stays snug,
And braves not the winter willy-nilly.

In days of old, when Knights were bold,
And safes were not invented,
  They tied a sock
  Around their cock,
And BABIES were prevented.

The talent around this place never ceases to amaze me even when it takes a spin around the laundry room like this.

That was good George.  Really.
