That is precisely why I don't take any California loads!!!  I've been seeing diesel for anywhere from 3.919 to 4.699.  Filled up my pickup last Wednesday at 3.919 in SC and spent $502.02.  Wasn't even empty.

$4.18 us gallon here. $1.10 per liter x 3.8, right? I am not good at conversions, but told to do it this way. Sorry if I am wrong with my math.  :-[

And for this "non-American friend" - (whatever in hell that means ;)) - our gas today was $1.15 per litre.

When I was in Florida two weeks ago - the gas station across from our hotel had gas for $3.25/gal.

However, we slice it - it's getting damnably expensive to operate vehicles.

It isn't going to get any better folks and the price of food will go up further too.  Loaf of bread is now $3.  Milk, ~$4 /gal. Lettuce $2 / head

In Western Pa... Regular is $3.49 a gallon here... I filled up my '93 Ford Ranger a few days ago and it cost me about $67.00.

With the right strategy and proper wind conditions... I'll bet I can make this tank of gas last till the end of next December.

with warm regards,

I just paid 3.32 @ the cheapest station in town.  Going to the grocery store is alot of fun too, seems like my bill is from 2-3 times more than usual.   The good news is that I hear that the demand for high end gourmet groceries like $140 bottles of olive oil has actually increased.   Go figure.

I used to like to visit friends out of town, go out of town to try a new restaurant or just take her for a spin thru the park.

  Now I do very little of that.   I no longer drive to Champaign Ill. (about 40 miles away from here)...I just have the drum shop ship out my stuff and my son has the art store  there ship to him as well.

The cost of fuel has made USPS shipping the only way I buy anymore. To drive to the drum shop for a few new drum heads costs 3 or 4 times what it does to simply have it shipped  :-[ >:( >:( >:(

Last week I bought gas before work for $3.09. When I got out of work, same day,  it was $3.12. I bought gas today at the same station for $3.22. The price is bad enough but the jumps are awful high. I live in a resort beach town so Memorial Day always brings price goughing.

 I drove to DC last Friday and prices ranged from $3.16 to $3.79 closer to DC.

I remember in the 70's alternating gas purchases and Virginia possibly having my license delayed a year to defray gas costs.

To my knowledge, the US has never controlled oil prices.  Oil production/pricing is controlled by OPEC (made up of the following countries~Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Qatar, Indonesia, Libya, UAE, Algeria, Nigeria, and Angola.  Other countries have been members, but dropped out).

The problem is the weak US dollar.

BTW, unleaded regular is between $3.21 and $3.29.

Taxes on US gasoline (including Federal excise taxes) range from a low of .26 in Alaska to .53 cents in Hawaii.

What I don't understand is why is it perfectly acceptable to drill in the Gulf of Mexico, but we can't drill 200 miles off the Atlantic coast.

And ethanol wouldn't be so attractive if the US removed the price supports in place (plus ethanol is NOT enviornmentally friendly).

Nothing went wrong, what do you mean?  Crude oil and gasoline are at record prices.  Oil profits are at record levels too.
Nothing went wrong.  Mission Accomplished.

Title: Re: How much is your gas now?
Post by fubar on Apr 16th, 2008, 12:49pm
Um, last I checked, England and most of Europe had higher gas prices than we do.  I just got back from Iceland where I saw $8 or more.

Mission accomplished?  Look, you can blame the evil administration for all your troubles (or, like most liberals, blame the evil administration for other people's troubles, but I digress) but the fact is our prices are *still* below the prices they pay in Europe and many developed countries.  I kind of appreciate that.

We have all been enjoying artificially low prices for a long long time.  Now, we are only beginning to see what the effect of a 'world economy' has on all of us.  That is the reality I am talking about.  These prices are here to stay, war or no war, with or without evil republicans or angelic democrats.

And 'record profits'... what a croc!  Oil companies barely make a 15% margin, so they aren't exactly printing money.  There are far more profitable businesses to be in, and they're made villains for providing something that is absolutely demanded at any price.  A 15% margin is nothing.

For crying out loud, if you want to complain about evil profits, look at the pharmaceuticals.  They come out with new 'formulas' and have doctors convinced to switch us just to make sure we can't benefit from the savings of generics (there are many examples).  That is pure evil.  Oil companies are saints compared to that.

Fu, might I suggest Europe have been enjoying artificially hi prices through excessive taxes.  The barrel of oil costs the same if a refinery buys it in Europe or the US.

$3.78 in the east bay area

San Francisco is higher

How about these other little topics...

Please take the time to read this.

This email comes in three parts:

           Part 1

In just one year.  Remember the election in 2006?

Thought you might like to read the following:

A little over one year ago:

1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
3) The unemployment rate was 4.5%.

Since voting in a Democratic Congress in 2006 we have seen:

1) Consumer confidence plummet;
2) The cost of regular gasoline soar to over $3.50 a gallon;
3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase);
4) American households have seen $2.3 trillion in equity value
evaporate (stock and mutual fund losses);
5) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $1.2 trillion dollars;
6) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.

America voted for change in 2006, and we got it!

Remember, it's Congress that makes law, not the President. He has to
work with what's handed to him.

Quote of the Day........"My friends, we live in the greatest nation in
the history of the world.  I hope you'll join with me as we try to
change it." -- Barack Obama

   Part 2:

Taxes...Whether Democrat or a Republican you will find these statistics
enlightening and amazing.

www.taxfoundation.org/publications/show/151.html

     Taxes under Clinton 1999                   Taxes under Bush 2008
Single making 30K - tax $8,400           Single making 30K - tax $4,500
Single making 50K - tax $14,000         Single making 50K - tax $12,500
Single making 75K - tax $23,250         Single making 75K - tax $18,750
Married making 60K - tax $16,800       Married making 60K- tax $9,000
Married making 75K - tax $21,000       Married making 75K - tax $18,750
Married making 125K - tax $38,750     Married making 125K - tax $31,250

   Both democratic candidates will return to the higher tax rates

It is amazing how many people that fall into the categories above think
Bush is screwing them and Bill Clinton was the greatest President ever.
If Obama or Hillary are elected, they both say they will repeal the Bush
tax cuts and a good portion of the people that fall into the categories
above can't wait for it to happen. This is like the movie The Sting with
Paul Newman; you scam somebody out of some money and they don't even
know what happened.

      PART 3:

You think the war in Iraq is costing us too much?   Read this:

Boy, am I confused.  I have been hammered with the propaganda that it is
the Iraq war and the war on terror that is bankrupting us. I now find
that to be RIDICULOUS.

I hope the following 14 reasons are forwarded over and over again until
they are read so many times that the reader gets sick of reading them.

Mostly due to Republican vetoes of anything for the little guy and constant lobbying by CEOs that never have to go to Walmart.

Spending $4,000,000 and hour on Halliburton & Co. in Iraq for no bid contracts, is a wonderful thing, isn't it?

It will be nice when that veto is gone and an idoit like Bush who said today that the Pope's speech was "awesome!" (that is the infantile word he used)  An unbelieveable thing to hear from a world leader. Bush still thinks that he is a cheerleader.

You are right, I believe a majority of the public bought it.  Those of use who think for ourselves didnt buy it for one second.  In this day and age, nothing costs just a couple billion.....specially when it has to do with the military.

In just one year.  Remember the election in 2006?

Thought you might like to read the following:

A little over one year ago:

1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
3) The unemployment rate was 4.5%.

Since voting in a Democratic Congress in 2006 we have seen:

1) Consumer confidence plummet;
2) The cost of regular gasoline soar to over $3.50 a gallon;
3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase);
4) American households have seen $2.3 trillion in equity value
evaporate (stock and mutual fund losses);
5) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $1.2 trillion dollars;
6) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.

...

The election of a Democratic Congress in 2006 isn't remotely related to the problems we are seeing now. The ongoing collapse of the credit market was due to poor decisions by individuals, deregulation and Enron style creative financing by banks and mortgage companies - so much for the naive belief that the government that governs best is the government that governs least.

The price of gasoline is due to changes in the world market (increased demand, limited ability to increase supply).

One thing that is responsive to Washington's policies is the value of the dollar. It has dropped like a rock, and it wasn't because the 2006 Congress (which took office in 2007) did anything unusual.  The deficit started ballooning long before that.

Greensboro NC area, today's prices are ranging from a low of 3.36 at places like Costco and Sam's (these are member prices).  The big guys, Shell, BP, Exxon are around 3.59.

Now, let's get in our car and drive South and cross the border between NC to SC.

Low prices at the off brand stations are around 3.31.  The big guys are charging around 3.39.

Notice the difference?  We folks in NC are paying about 20 cents per gallon more than SC residents, because NC has this lovely gas tax, of about 20 cents a gallon that supposedly goes to pay for road improvements.  Well, based on all the orange barrels that are on almost every street, they are really raking in the $$$$.

NC is one of the highest taxing states in the US, and this is not just for gas.

When we plan a drive down to SC to see our kids and granddaughter, we leave home with about a half a tank.  This gets us in to SC where we tank up.  On the way home, we tank up about 30 miles before the NC line, and go all the way home.

I think I'll move to NC so I can catch a break.

Wisconsin's gas tax is 44 cents per gallon. We're now up around the $3.69 - $3.75 range.

Add to this the wisdom of our governor and legislature who have implemented a 10% ethanol mandate (as payback to the corn lobby that gets them elected). This mandate is based on numerous lies (not science), and the bottom line is that we get a more polluted environment and 2-3 miles less per gallon than if we could run 100% gasoline.

I don't think we're long for this state.

Good info, Brew.

I just read a day or two in my local paper (which is a rag), that using ethanol as fuel for our cars would give us more miles per gallon than gasoline.  True, false?

We have now two diametrically opposed opinions on whether ethanol increases or decreases mileage.  Who can we believe, your rag, or my rag????

But, the article also said that MAKING ethanol is harder to make and burns more fuel that pollutes the air that we breathe more than making gasoline.

I'll try to find the article I read in my rag, and then let's compare notes.

Either way, the typical typical gas or ethanol buyer is going to get screwed!

Sandy......just go here http://www.fueleconomy.gov/ and look up a vehicle that is rated "E85 Flex Fuel". Note the ratings listed for gasoline and E85. That will answer you mileage questions. It's up to you to believe or not the other claims, but the facts are that E85 doesn't get the fuel mileage regular gas does.

Example posted below....

I never quoted a rag, Sandy. It is a well known fact that adding alcohol to gasoline decreases gas mileage. You should be able to find at least a hundred sources if you Google it.

Your local rag is either hopelessly out of touch, stupid, or liars. Or all three.

I have never been able to figure out the following: If ethanol is such a great alternative, why does it have to be mandated? Simply let gas stations put it side by side with 100% gasoline and let consumers decide.

There's only one answer to that, and it has to do with political contributions.

Wow, Bill, that thing says that the difference between E85 and gasoline is 10mpg and 15mpg?

Thats a massive difference.  Am i reading that right?

Due to the way we have our infrastructure laid out, it takes much more energy to make 1 million gallons of ethanol than it does to make 1 million gallons of gasoline.  First of all, you have to fire up all those tractors to farm the corn......and you cant put corn through a pipeline either.

Many other plants would give much more BTUs per ton than corn, but we dont have the infrastructure to process those other types of plants.

I can second what Bill is saying. Ethanol is a sham, a ruse, a falsity.

I used to work for one of the big boy oil companies (many years ago). I personally converted most of the gas dispensers in the South - South Eastern WI to accept Ethanol. All it takes is a filter that looks like a large oil filter. All the filter does is arorb water. Water doesn't seperate in ethanol like it does in normal gas and thus it gets pumped into cars if the dispenser doesn't filter the water out. And there is water in every gas stations tank as they use columns of water to seperate the different blends of gas in the pipeline that feed the tank farms, that feed the tanker trucks that feed the gas stations.

Bottom line is that every station with in an area of X population desnity must use ethanol by law. Each one of those pumps needs a filter. For every filter I installed the goverment gas the oil company around 5000 bucks as an incentive to make the switch.

Thats correct, your tax money going right from you hands, to the government hands, to the oil companies hands, all without you getting any gas for it at all.

Any people doubt the oil company - government tie!

It was all about the money. Ethanol is terrible for your engine, provides bad mileage but does burn cleaner by volume burned. But the mileage is worse to it causes more polution in the long term cuz more has to be burned.

BTW WI folks, all the gas you buy in SE WI is the same as it all comes from the same pipeline and goes to the same tank farms. The only gas station in the SE WI area that has their own tank farms is Amaco.

Even when I worked for a competing gas company I bought my gas from Amaco and I got a few more miles per tank of gas like clock work.

This was 15 years ago or so - i assume the situation is the same as I have not noticed any additional tank farms going up.

Why? Enlighten us, please.

Another thing to note: I will NEVER put ethanol blend gas in any of my lawn and garden equipment. Because of what Jamey mentioned, the ethanol attracts and retains moisture. For modern cars that are fuel injected, it's not that big of a deal, but for lawn mowers, tractors, rototillers, snow blowers, leaf blowers, etc., some of the gas remains in the carburator, attracts the water out of the atmosphere, and corrodes the inside of the bowl.
