Great piece of Photoshop work and a good thread so far, but all we've got at this point is a broken election campaign system and half the story. If you think the campaign system is broken and in need of reform, let's write, fax, or email our Congressman and Senators. While we're at it, can someone follow the gold and see where these hundreds of millions in campaign funds are really being spent? I suspect TV ads, travel, and paid staff are a big part of this, but there are other expenditures of our tax dollars going into this mother of all campaign bills. For example, I'm sure the Secret Service would like to see a fee for service charged to each White House wannabe for security details covering all campaign travel outside a route between Washington DC and their home state. The bill for Secret Service security details since May of 2007 through the November 2008 election is estimated to be around $200 million and the democratic party contenders have racked up the lion's share. The GAO report on government credit card abuse provided an estimate that was based on a statistical sampling routine. That doesn't make it right or wrong, it's just an estimate. I've a feeling this story has legs so a lot of folks who abused their government credit card privileges are going to get fired, fined, or both deservedly so. Again this is only half the story... Were the full story be told, I think we'll find the government BOA credit cards represent a major labor savings in time lost filling out all the required travel expense liquidation paperwork. I know it sounds like a lot of money in terms of donations and tax dollars being spent for this election cycle, but that's the price of democracy in our country. If you want to see how insignificant an amount this really is, take a look at the cost of entitlements in the FY 2008 budget passed by congress... But that's grist for another thread... My 2 cents... It seems that Washington thinks that it's cool to give farmers big checks to cover disasters related to crops and livestock. The thing that's new is that it's based on the acreage, not the crops and of course the monster farms are owned by investors that would have trouble spotting a barn or a cow. The best part is that all they have to do is declare a disaster. It can be anything and is. My favorite is when the shuttle exploded over the midwest. They decided that shrapnel from the explosion was enough of a disaster to send big checks to the land owners. This went on for weeks and in places that were several states away from the disaster.
