Title: Funny story...well maybe not so funny
Post by Rosybabe on Apr 9th, 2008, 9:24am
Saturday, 4:15 am, we heard a loud knockign at the front door, and I mean loud!! woke us up and the dog started barking outside...
We got up and I went to check at the window, I saw nothing..
My husband went to get his gun (you never know in this area, one must be prepared)...
I thought it was an emergency, my neighboors, who knows...my heart was beating like crazy and my chest hurt..I thought I was having a heart attack!!
My husband thought it was someone trying to make us open the door to break into the house...
He got ready with the gun and opened the door...
something flew from the porch to the street about 30 ft...

It was a huge bird, one with a long beak!!!!
it looked like this but with a longer beak..

talk about a scare!!!!...we could not go back to sleep after this  :o

One upon an early morning
Came a knock without a warning
Grabbed my gun and went to answer
The knock upon my door

Locked and loaded; slowly creeping
Down the hall; out the door peeking
The visitor to my door seeking
who was it knocked upon my door

Grabbed the knob, threw the door open
Gripping the gun, but inside hoping
There'd be no one interloping
Knocking on my front door

The door flew open with wings a flapping
Restrained myself from blindly capping
Whoever it was that came a rapping
Rapping upon my front door

In the dark my eye did seek
And spied the bird with great large beak
Who'd come upon my porch to eat
Lizards crawling on my front door

Only this and nothing more

Nice.  Poe would be proud.   ;;D

Sounds like your heron had some real 'nads, Rosy.  They can be pretty bold, but I haven't heard of one lunching on the porch before.

Best,

George

Rosy,
that sounds scary! :o

Back at our summer cottage we've had interesting situations  a few times (not that dramatic, though): once a squirrel ate our wooden decorations so loudly that it woke us up. And once we found a rabbit with littleones spending time under our summer cottage.

Sand Hill Crane maybe?

I think they may winter in your area although the cranes we have around here never seem to leave.  They hang out in our yard sometimes and we're 20 miles from Lake Michigan.  They are more a prairie dweller near small bodies of water.  Kinda scary to walk around the side of the house and come face to face with a bird as tall as I am . . .

I imagine, upon the Heron's discovering a gun in his beak, he must assuredly be thinking.......
Quoth the Heron............"Nevermore............"

;;D That is funny!

I was talking to my neighboor and She said that someone knocked at her door too around the same time but she was too lazy to get up and check who was it...I told her what if it was me with an emergency..and she said ..well next time call 911... :(...I guess I should consider myself all on my own from now on.. [smiley=huh.gif]
next time I won't go outside to chase off the thieves who want to break into her garage like I have done twice >:(

sorry..but kind of pissed me off...
