Title: Paris is here, so what?
Post by sandie99 on Apr 3rd, 2008, 1:19pm
Oh yes, Paris Hilton has arrived to Helsinki, Finland.

And, naturally, the media is reporting her every move. There's already been a tiny incident, when Hilton's security guard pushed one photographer against a wall.

I was surprised to find out that Hilton won't be staying at a Hilton hotel; we have 3 of them and all of them are located in Helsinki. Instead, she's staying at Kämp, which is one of the best - if not best - hotel.

As media student I am bit dissapointed that our media has come to the point in which Paris Hilton's arrival actully makes it to the 8pm news broadcast... It just shows how the news have changed into more 'entertaining'.

Aguess Benji Madden and the rest of Good Charlotte can take it easy; their arrival is barely noticed when Hilton gets all the attention! ;;D

As a media student, I'm sure you realize that the sole purpose of newspapers, magazines, tabloids, and television is to sell advertising and make money.

As an Advertising Sales Executive, I must dissagree.  Media is multi purpose.  The priority of any media is provide the consumer with news, information, and entertainment in the way in which they want to receive it.

Advertising is two fold.

1) the advertisor desires to get their message to the consumer to spend money with them.  The media provides the avenue by which the advertiser can get that message to the public.

2) The revenue generated by advertising covers the cost of producing the media and the overhead paid for the employees, while keeping the cost to the consumer reasonable.

That's the complex answer. The simple answer is that, in a free market society, any business exists solely to make money.

I disagree.  They provide entertainment and news in the way  they THINK we ought to receive it.

Like they know better about what I want than I do.

Which is why the television is mostly OFF at our house, and we no longer subscribe to the dead-tree version of our newspaper.

Forgot to include that every other interview consists of some talking head selling a book.

Sorry, I have to agree with Bill.

Ruport Murdock is one of the richest people alive and his media empire is well know to be for sale to the highest bidder. He'd step on his grandchild's throat to pickup a penny, only because the story would sell so well and his empire would have exclusives to it.

The "news" is basically outlawed at this house. Whether one likes Borat or not, rent the move, watch the rodeo part, then watch the included outtakes to see what the media spins - it is quite a relivation. Basically the rodeo owner makes racist remarks about Borat looking like a Muslim (which he is not of course) by making racial slurs, then when Borat makes anti-muslim comments to the crowd, which they enjoy. Then he butchers the national anthem and the crowd turns on him. That night the local tv news report, though careful editing, makes it look like the crowd was booing the anti-muslim comments Borat made and the rodeo owner acts appaled by Borats anti-muslim comments even though he is the one who started the comments.

I've seen dozens of storys end up this way and I assume it is the norm, not the exception to the rule.

Basically the "news" can and most often does manipulate the story, through editing, to which-ever angle they think will make the biggest rating for them, thus sell more ad space.

The media exercises its editorial power not by what they choose to report on, but what they choose NOT to report on.

Usually the media uses Galtung & Ruge's list of news values when they pick the topics they write about:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/News_values

Paris Hilton would be "Reference to elite persons", I'm sure.

And we'll throw in Britany Spears, Nicole Ritchi, Jessica Simpson in for free.

Such a deal !!!!!  Finland should jump at the chance to have such "elite persons" among them.

I used to like late night radio. Remember all the DJs and the non-Art Bell type shows? Larry King was one back in the early 80s on WTOP, from D. C. I think and much more interesting than his CNN show. Anyway, now late night radio is homoginized by media conglomerates that have pumped all the fun out of radio and made it boring as hell. No need to rock the boat or allow listeners to be informed about science for example. It's okay to let all those consumers hear about UFO conspriacies, and crackpot medical junk though.

What a shame.

Well, according to the headlines, Paris did mention "loving" Finland... ;;D But somehow I think that even Helsinki is not big enough for the people like Paris Hilton.

"Simple Life: Finland" would probably be far too much for any of them to handle... ;)

But I'm, sure that there are few gossip magazines, which would just looove having her and Nicole Ritchie and Jessica Simpson here on regular basis. ;)
The regular Finns might disagree, though.
