Title: What a proud moment for Finland...

...not.

I sure hope that this will be the end of it. I've had enough of this scandal already - and the former minister's text messages to this woman in question were published by Hymy (Smile) only today...

Yeah, we get a lot of that sort of thing here.  Guess politicians aren't much different anywhere else.

You'd think they'd at least be discreet while they were in office, but "needs must as the devil drives" , I suppose.

From the link:

" Kanerva, 60, initially denied reports in Hymy -- a gossip magazine -- that he had sent about 200 messages by mobile phone to the dancer, Johanna Tukiainen. But last week he apologized publicly, acknowledging he had sent some messages but insisting they were all work-related.

The 29-year-old dancer said Kanerva had, among other things, inquired about her underwear."

Does anyone else besides me find this explanation less than compelling?   ;;D

Best wishes,

George

Aguess "I didn't text that woman" is our " I did not sleep with that woman".

Now the discussion is centred around who did what - and most of all: did the media pressure cause this minister to lose his position or not.

As a journalist, it's interesting question; there has been so much talk about media's power and how the digital era will diminish it.

Somehow I think that there are plenty of young Finnish media students taking notes this very moment and writing their dissertations about this one one day! ;)

Just thought that I'd let you know that this made the Buffalo, New York newspaper a couple days ago. Who would have thought that something like this from Helsinki would take up space in Western, New York State news?  8)

The media has been up to its usual tricks here too.

Charlie,

thank you for letting me know! Our papers have mentioned that this story has made it to the news internationally, but that is quite exeptional.

Media experts talk now that this case shows that the people want that politicians show a great example as politicians - and as private persons. Naturally, only time will tell if this is a trend or just one, seperate incident.

Detroit's mayor has been neck deep with the same crap.

Quote:
Detroit mayor to face criminal charges -- eight felony counts, the fallout from a text message scandal.

Kilpatrick ruined the lives of three former police officers who were connected to an investigation of his family, then used $8.4 million in tax money to buy their silence when he learned their lawyer had obtained text messages showing he and Beatty lied at trial.

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080324/NEWS01/303250001

The original investigation ended when the lead witness turned up dead and officers fired.  He was then re-elected.

While sitting in her car with her boyfriend, Greene was shot 3 times with a .40 caliber Glock handgun. Although official statement by Detroit Police Departement claims that Ms. Green was shot three times, sources from Homocide Division of DPD have claimed that she, in fact, was shot 18 times.

Since 2002, the Washington D.C. police will only offer professional courtesy protection to Kilpatrick while he is conducting official business in the nation's capital. Washington police no longer provide after-hours police protection to Kilpatrick because of his inappropriate partying during past visits.

Quote:
How much more public time and tax dollars are city lawyers going to spend fighting subpoenas and hiding records instead of seeing to public business?

In addition to his issues with the courts and council, the mayor -- despite what he says -- has lost the confidence of the business community, which is vital to Detroit's continued progress. He has broken faith with the police force, divided the city's population and rendered himself a nonplayer in regional and state issues that are crucial for Detroit. He's political poison.

Simply put, Kwame Kilpatrick has reached the point of being more trouble than he is worth to the city.

If the council does not act, then Gov. Jennifer Granholm has to consider exercising the power of her office to remove local elected officials.

New Yorkers seem to be more tolerant of our new Governor who was replaced for using $5,000 prostitues.

The new Gov admits that he was unfaithful more than once over the years, did cocaine years ago and that his wife wasn't no angel too.

He's getting a pass though and seems to get along.

Charlie, I don't think that Finns would be as forgiving should exactly similar behaviour occur in here.

What kind of surprises me the most is that our former minister was known for his text message ethusiasm; he has sent them to many, many women before this one. Aguess he would have been safe this time around as well if he had not been a minister.

Alot of New Yorkers were upset with Spitzer because he used to convict with glee in his eyes. It actually turned out that he was as dumb as a tree trunk !
