Around the campus this week. Some organizations have been reduced from 16% to 60% depending on their function. There have been a few that left kicking and screaming with security escorts.

My name made it to the managers list so I'm safe for now, I don't know how many I'll walk out the door in the next 13 days. I've managed these folks for 7 years and I know that whoever I walk out is like family to me. I've got no low performers anymore, they are all equal in productivity and behavioral dimensions. I know who goes first and then in sequence of who is next. This is the part that just bites.

Mark, I know how much you dread this each and every time it happens. You do your best to "stay under the radar, fearing you could be next to go. Then, you agonize over who it is they'll force YOU to do th e lynching for, and so it goes........if I were you, as close as you are to the people in your unit, I would tell them exactly what you've said here.
It's a numbers game- you know that. If the upper mgnt gets rid of enough staff, the numbers rise, company looks more attractive(ie:saleable)....and the upper mgmt gets THeir raise.'Feather YOUR nest, and be prepared for being jettisoned..........the best revenge will be living well with out the company.

I've been in your shoes before more than once. In fact I've been on both sides of the table. It's not easy to face all that fear, uncertanty and doubt every day. My heart goes out to you.

I am the victim this spring of the downsizing of a company. Being the highest paid in my position and having a trigger finger owner as a manager didn't help much. I am looking at it as a way to take my skills and do something a little differently. Something a little more family friendly and less taxing on my body. I took a pay cut and a demotion to keep working for now. (I am the only one working in the family) Got some feelers out and hope to move on very soon.
It all will work out for the best. I still believe honesty, integrity and reliability count for something.
