Title: Texting and driving
Post by Callico on Mar 15th, 2008, 12:16am
As most of you know, I drive for a living.  I have seen a lot of things on the road, and have seen many dumb things done, and the aftermath.  This, fortunately, I did not see as it happened in Europe, but it is a good reminder of what can happen in an instant when we allow ourselves to be distracted while driving.

I will not include the other photos showing the remains of the driver.  Please drive carefully, safely, and consciously.

Jerry

Edit to add:  The young man driving the car was texting while driving and crossed the center line.

Jerry, thanks for not showing the rest of the pics. I have seen ALL the pics on this accident and it was not pretty. I did not know what caused this crash but should have known it would be another cell phone incident.

Texting and driving, deadly combo! I am watching out for the "other guy" more than ever now. I guess he paid the ultimate price for thinking he could do this while driving. :P

When I first saw these pictures earlier I went to throw up. I was in tears. I thought it was an accident I actually saw about six months ago or so here. There was a car, also blue that had driven smack into a lorry just like that and was unrecognisable. As I drove past there was a baby car seat on the side of the road. We'd had to wait for about n hour in a traffic queue for an air ambulance to arrive. There was a family with five kids in the car including the baby and 2 parents none of whom survived. The driver of the lorry did and he was the one who caused the accident. He was a continental lorry driver and he too was on the phone although whether it was texting or talking I don't know.

I was in tears then, I was in tears today remembering it again. It devastated me. When will people hang up and drive? I turn my phone off when driving or to silent so I can't be bothered by it. If I'm waiting for something urgent I still pull over before answering or I phone back asap. Who is so important that they have to be a danger to all around them?

A sobering reminder Jerry  :'(

Those pictures is a great reminder why driving and using mobile phone is illegal back in here. People are allowed to use their phones while driving if they use wireless which allowes them to talk, but not to text.

Still, I see people using their mobile phones while driving nearly every day. Aguess they think that they are so experienced drivers and so wise mobile phone users that nothing can happen to them... ::)

I don't have much experience as a driver, but I cannot imagine even considering using my mobile phone while I drive. Rare things are really so urgent that the caller couldn't wait or call again.

Can you imagine if that would have happened after the driver answered to a call from a telemarketer???  :-X

I was driving to Peoria one day last week, and while pulling out onto the highway, my phone said I had a voice mail (funny, I didn't hear the phone ring). I opened it up to listen to the voice mail, and there wasn't one. I looked down at my phone, and there's a fucking TEXT message from my wireless provider (Sprint) rolling across the screen. Something about improvement in service (?) and something else. What a smart thing to do! Send a text message to your customer while they are driving!

I closed the phone and when I got to Peoria, I went to the big Sprint store. Told them to never EVER text message me again. If they need to reach me, they can call me.  (I had to tell them a few years ago to never call my cell phone, they were making marketing calls to my cell phone). And it better be related to my bill, if they do call. I asked them how many of their employees drove and sent text messages.

We talked about this in our office, one girl I work with, her friends drive and text all the time. I suppose it's only a matter of time before a wireless company ends up in a law suit over it. Me, I can't imagine doing it, way too dangerous. Gotta be some sort of generation gap there... I hate to say it, but true. I'm gonna send her these pics, there's a powerful message here. Maybe if her friends see them, they'll get the idea.

Working for FedEx, I can tell you that all of our pickup and delivery vehicles have computer screen read-outs inside. They also have equipment installed so that the screen blanks out whenever the vehicle is rolling. You wanna read your message? You stop your vehicle.

Does the above link work for text messaging or just voice calls?

I'm no fan of cellular telcos, but how are they supposed to know what the recipient is doing when they (or anyone else) sends a text message to someone?

Scott,

Good video to illustrate the point.  Take an 80,000lb truck at 65 mph and hit it head on at 65mph.  That is a tremendous amount of force.  A side impact like that doesn't diminish the force enough to make a difference to the guy driving that pick up.

Jerry, thanks for posting that. Two of my "other" kids were here today, and I told them about your post.

Seems one of 'em was doing that very thing yesterday- texting and driving.

I think it got thru.

Thanx.

Well, you have to dial the number to send text. So, it should work for spam. From telemarketers.
