Title: Vicksburg Natl. Military Park-Pictures Post by deltadarlin on Mar 6th, 2008, 2:53pm I came home yesterday via Vicksburg and took my lunch hour for a trip thru the park. I'm working my way through all the pictures and getting them processed and then getting them loaded on photobucket. Here is the link to the parks' website http://www.nps.gov/archive/vick/home.htm Here are a few to start http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1331.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1332.jpg The following two pics are part of one monument (the figures go on top) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1334.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1335.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1337.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1338.jpg More to come as I get them processed and loaded. |

Title: Re: Vicksburg Natl. Military Park-Pictures Post by deltadarlin on Mar 7th, 2008, 9:43am Well he[. getting *looks*, but no responses. Guess I need to stick to landscapes ::). Anyway, found out that I didn't have all my pics loaded, so since the weather is turning off bad and I'm not going too far, trying to get the rest of them loaded. Here are a few more http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1321.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1324.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1327.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1319.jpg |

Title: Re: Vicksburg Natl. Military Park-Pictures Post by LeLimey on Mar 7th, 2008, 9:54am Is there a memorial for every state Carolyn? I love the one of the cannons. It was a beautiful day there. These are quite different from your usual ones but they are lovely all the same as it's seeing somewhere I wouldn't get the chance to otherwise. I loved those plantation photo's you posted ages ago too. It's nice to see the world through someone elses eyes. One of these days I want you to "take me" to New Orleans. I can see pictures of that on a million websites but I'd like to see your perspective. |

Title: Re: Vicksburg Natl. Military Park-Pictures Post by deltadarlin on Mar 7th, 2008, 10:10am I think there is a memorial for every state that had troops in the Battle of Vicksburg. I don't have all of the pics up yet, but in several of them, you can get an idea of the bluffs/hills in the park. There was a pitched battle here and both sides used the natural terrain as a *shield*. The weather was gorgeous that day. I'm planning on going back in a month of so and take a lot more pictures. I missed quite a bit, because I didn't have that much time. |

Title: Re: Vicksburg Natl. Military Park-Pictures Post by deltadarlin on Mar 8th, 2008, 10:17am There are over 17,000 Union soldiers buried in this (I need to find the Vicksburg city cemetary, where the Confederate soldiers are buried) cemetary. Where the names were known, the most common practice was to etch their names on a board (only about 5,000 were *known*). If you can see, many have just a small, square marker. That marker has a number on it, all that is known of the person buried there. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1388.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1389.jpg These *tablets* are placed around the cemetary http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1390.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1397.jpg This is the USS Cairo, an ironclad that was sunk by Confederate forces while it was sailing up the Yazoo river to Vicksburg. http://www.nps.gov/archive/vick/cairo/cairo.htm http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1397.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1373.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1374.jpg The paddlewheel http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1376.jpg The right rudder http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1378.jpg These pictures from the bluff above the boat http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1380.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v123/tribander_3/Vicksburg%20MS%20National%20Military%20Park/IMG_1387.jpg |

Title: Re: Vicksburg Natl. Military Park-Pictures Post by Linda_Howell on Mar 8th, 2008, 10:19pm I've been gone for 5 days or I would have certainly chimed in on this. Your pics are beautiful. Of course like every who ever attended High school in the US, we all learned about the Civil war. It was alway done through books and memorizing dates and names. Not one teacher I had ever made it interesting. Until.... We drove to Richmond for the convention last year. All along the way to and from Richmond we stopped at battlefields. Talked to Jimi Hendrix about Kentucky's involvement...etc. I now have more books on my shelves about the Civil war than cook-books... Thank you Darlin, for those wonderful pics. Linda |
