I need some help here.

My daughter, Amanda, gave birth to my first grandchild, Delia in January. My other daughter is pregnant, and due to deliver my second granddaughter at the end of July.

Both daughters are asking my husband and me "what do you want to be called by your grandchildren?".

Apparently, today, Grandparents are supposed to "choose" how they wish to be called by their grandchildren, rather than just let the child call you whatever is the first thing that comes out of their mouths when they refer to you. I would prefer letting my granddaughters name me, than me pick my own name.

Well, my first choice would have been Nana and PaPa, but both names are already taken by the in-laws on both sides, so that's out.

I called my grandparents Grandma and Pop

I guess I could just live with Grandma and Grandpa, but I'm not sure that's the one.

What did you call your Grandparents? What do your children call their Grandparents?

I need some ideas.

I might not be of much help here since we are from hispanic origin but we use cute names for our Grands, My daughter calls her american Grandmother "Granny" and "Bulita" to my mother. My nieces call their Grandma "Abby". I think you will love the way your grandkids call you any way :).

We're nani and papa to our grandkids.
Of course, I'm nani to most kids, and some adults.

BTW...nani was the first thing out of my friend's kid's mouth when she started talking...I've been nani since the early 80s.

We always address our grandparents as grandma and Grandpa.

When I had little ones my grandma was still alive. So to distinguish between grandma and great grandma. He started calling my grandma MeMe.

MeMe has now passed on and my Aunt now has grandkids and they call her MeMe too.

I think that I would like to be call MeMe when my time arrives FAR FAR from now!!!

My kids always called my Mom, Grammy. Their dad's Mom is Grandma Lois.

I don't even want to think about what I'd want a grandchild to call me. That my jynx something down the road somewhere... ;)

I Googled 'names for grandparents'.......it was fun...lots of differents ones... :)

Blake is Pappy and I'm Grammy. When they really want my attention it's 'GrammyJack'.... :D

My grandchildren call their other grandmother (her name is Sandy) GranniSanni...

Letting grandchildren call you what comes out of their mouth first might not be good......I know a Grammy called Bug-Goo..... ;;D

I have been blessed with all my Grandparents living to ripe old ages that even my children got to know them well before my grandpa's passed away. My grandmothers are still alive and doing well. I called both my Grandmothers Grandma and both Grandfathers Grandpa. When talking about them their last name was always tacked onto the end so it was clear who was being referenced. Grandma Smith for example.

When my children where born they called my parents and Ted's parents Grandma and Grandpa. They called my Grandparents (Their Great Grandparents) , ie Grandma Ruth, Grandpa Amel, and the other set Great Grandma and GreatGrandpa Smith.

Now I am "Grandma"and Ted is "Grandpa". My Mom and Dad are GreatGrandma and pa and Ted's Mom is Great Grandma. My grandmothers are great great Grandma's no they want to be called grandma Irene and grandma Ruth.

Pretty Plain stuff hear in my house but lots of love.

My grandma was Meema when I was little - it was mummy backwards in my mind! As I got bigger she was grandma and grandad was grandad. Both sides of the fmaily were the same but if I wanted to specify who I was talking about I'd say Grandma in England or Grandma in Ireland!

I like Grandma - I think it's lovely. Meema was nice too looking at it now but I got too embarrassed by it when all my cousins thought I was a baby!

My mother was adopted by her New Zealand teachers who came from England. I called her Nanna and him Poppa. Apparently that was the first thing that came out of my mouth when I was told to greet them as baby, or at least that was what my mother claimed I said !

Lucky he didnt become Pop Eye during my teenage years ! I did think about it ! LOL !

Sandy - kids will figure out which Grandma they mean even if they have more than one.

With the numbers of grandkids we have - we are called different things by the kids.

Grandma Carol & Grandma Bill or Gramps & Grandma (from the 7 on Bill's side)

The 3 on my side call us Grandma & Poppa, but they refer to us (when speaking to others) as Grandma Sweet Boy and Golf Poppa. It was interesting when my oldest grandson's (he's now 13) teacher asked my daughter to explain what a Grandma Sweet Boy & Golf Poppa was but that's how those kids figured out the difference in Grandmas & Poppas which they had on both sides.

The kids will figure it out as they go along.

When my daughter was dating a guy with young kids, they called me *granny* (of course they were much older and wanted to know what to call me).

Yeah, I more or less agree with everybody else. They'll figure it out.

That was a hard one with us too. We go by nani and papa.

There is mema and Pop! My kids thought we were saying Meanma and that is what they call my Mother to this day Meanma.

"Grand Mother" and "Grand Father" That is what we called my grandparents.

Nani Sandy and papa your husbands first name.

I'm Granny and Bill was Papaw - other set are Nana and Papa.

My parents were Mamaw and Papaw - Bill's parents were Grandmaw and Paw.

My Dad called my grandmother Lucy B and that's what we all called her, even her kids started calling her that.

It really doesn't matter what they call you - you're gonna love it and you'll lose your idenity... once it's established - EVERYONE will call you that.... I haven't been Barbara since Caleb was born - I've been Granny (and I just love it :) ).

Remarkable that a woman loses her surname as she marries, her christian name when she gives birth, and it changes again forever with her first grandchild.

Even more remarkable is that identity-crisis never comes into it.

My grand kids call me Papa.

My Moms parents died by the time she was 12 so I never knew them, but I did know my dads dad.....I called him Pa, he died when I was 3......bummer!

Our neighbor's kids call their grandparents Nana and Popop.

I always called my grandparents Grampa and Gramma.

Jr. Brew called his grandparents Gramma Shirley (or Gramma Carol) and Grampa Jim or Grampa Tom. Of course when he was too little to say that clearly it was gampajoom and gampatom . . . . cute.

I won't even try to explain that Gramma Shirley is really his great Aunt whose been like a gramma to him since my mom died before he was born . . . . she's just Gramma Shirley.

Two of my grandparents passed away years before I was born and the other two passed away when I was little (mom's dad when I was 2 and dad's mom when I was 9).

I recall calling dad's mom mummi - Finnish version of granny. Grandma in Finnish would be mummo. It's a lot easier for Finnish kids, because there is usually just one world to use about grandad's and that's ukki. :) Some do call their grandfathers pappa.

On my mom's side, we call them Nana and Pappy. On my dad's side, it's Grandma and Grandpa. It's even tough now with what I call them around my cat! haha I call my dad Grandpop - I think that's who he will become when I have kids. I don't know about my mom though - Grandmom? I don't know.... I like Nana, too.

I think the grandchildren are the ones who coin these nicknames. That said, my grandson Michael, at 10 yrs of age, calls us Grampa & Gramma...he says we ARE his Grampa and Gramma..... his OTHER grandmother(no grandfather there) is "Grandma Brown".......I like that! If he called me by my last name, I would feel soo distant from him. He is my greatest joy, and it's wonderful to feel so close .
That said, my mother was always Mema.coined by my now-25 yr old nephew, who thought of her as HIS, at s very young age, hence...... ME MA! My grandmother, now 102 1/2, has been a great-great gandmother for about 15 yrs, and someone coined the term GG.for great great (grandma) for HER.........
Sandy, whatever they call you, I hope it is full of warmth and the feeling of close affection-a connection between you........... but, I'm willing to bet the kids come up with their own, very special nicknames for you and your
husband...........

This has been interesting reading. There are so many variations of names for grandparents, and from reading all of your posts, all of you gave whatever name to your grandparent with love, and that's all that matters.

my friend is Mimi
my other friend is Yaya

Good luck deciding it took me a while to decide and it really doesnt matter because I never see them...

My father and stepmother- zayde (yiddish) and grandma rainie(laraine)

my mom -bubbee (yiddish)
my dad- G P G (grandpa Gerry)
my dad's wife -Kris (she refuses to be called grandma anything... don't get me started)

My hubby's mom--Mimi (so named by my eldest)
My hubby's stepdad-- Daisy (used to say upsie-daisy to my oldest all the time, so AJ called him Daisy) now goes by Grandpa
My hubby's father-- Grandpa Lockman
My hubby's stepmom- Grandma maureen (my hubby has other words for her..lol)

My kids are the only grandkids so what they say goes :)

I am Granny (God, the Law and Last word on life the universe and everything)

My Grandfather was Pops
My Dad was Grandad
Rob is Pops

the Outlaws are Grandma and Grandpa.

Grandparents have to be called something before the little ones can talk.

How would you say "Give Granny a kiss/Huggle goodbye/goodnight etc etc etc

My grandmas and grandpas were always just grandma and grandpa.

My granddaughter named me PawPaw, but my wife didn't want to be called a "cute" name (got that from her mother), so her name is pronounced Grammaw. Her mother asked me how long was I going to let Sahara call me PawPaw and without thinking, I said, "Any idiot can be a Grandpa. I'm proud to called PawPaw, because that's what she named me." Jane about popped my chops when we got alone. Her dad is "Grandpa." OOOPS! LOL
