Title: Wheat for Oil... Post by Paul98 on Mar 4th, 2008, 9:56am Perhaps the USA and other large grain producing countries should form a grain cartell. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/f02c1e94-e4d6-11dc-a495-0000779fd2ac.html?nclick_check=1 -P. |

Title: Re: Wheat for Oil... Post by karma on Mar 4th, 2008, 10:33am Great idea but the issue of water supply is a very serious one world wide. Having lived on a small island with no natural water rescources my entire life I am accutely aware of the value of water. Unlike oil, or gas we simply cannot live without it and it is running short. Florida, Georgia and Alabama are in a fight to control scarce rescources in the south. Colorado, Nevada, California are battling with each other to control the shrinking rescouces in the west. Everyone needs to do their part in conserving water. The world is running out and the problem is far more serious than not being able to afford gas to put in your car. |

Title: Re: Wheat for Oil... Post by pattik on Mar 4th, 2008, 1:06pm That would make for an interesting trade agreement, but the price of our pasta, cereals, and baked goods would come down if the U.S. government would trash the corn/ethenol subsidies. On a level playing field, the high cost of wheat would attract more growers and the price would moderate. The water issue is very real. Globally, water will be the new oil. Even on a regional basis, this is becoming quite an issue here in the upper Midwest. Many parts of the country have been greedily eyeing our Great Lakes water, and we're finally acknowledging that it's time to start a little protectionism. Here's a link to an article which addresses this growing problem: "A new multistate agreement working its way through state legislatures builds a legal wall around the largest source of fresh water in the world. The deal would ensure that no Great Lakes water is ever shipped outside the region — not in pipes to Arizona, not in ships to Asia, not even to Madison, Wis., or Columbus, Ohio." http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-12-10-great-lakes-debate_x.htm |

Title: Re: Wheat for Oil... Post by Charlie on Mar 4th, 2008, 6:56pm Yup. Living east of Lake Erie, we're getting a lot of news about the legal firewalls building around our lakes. It's serious crapola. Charlie |
