Title: Re: for George... Post by George_J on Feb 16th, 2008, 1:01pm Downy Woodpecker? The only other thing it might be is a Hairy Woodpecker, but it looks too small to be that. And yeah--they are quick. LOL. Thanks, Mel. Pop that baby out, would you? Yer makin' all us prospective aunts and uncles crazy. Best wishes, George |

Title: Re: for George... Post by Melissa on Feb 16th, 2008, 1:08pm LOL!! The size of the pecker was a little smaller than a Blue Jay. And I want to have this baby already, but she's not listening to me! A preview of the future I am sure. ::) [smiley=grin2.gif] |

Title: Re: for George... Post by coach_bill on Feb 17th, 2008, 8:39am i think it a downey woodpecker, maybe a female i got lots of them by me here in cleveland, the reason i say female i didnt see very much red on the underside of the neck. also ur very lucky. i never am able to get them to come to to the food we put out. great picture. also i got golden finches that eat from my feeder less than 8 inches from my recliner its great, they even let me know when to refill, they should be arriveing in about a month or so, thanks for the pic. you really lifted my spirts today. p.s george i live next to a golf course and the are many pines here so i have millions of red wing black birds here, we cant keep them off our feeders, "greedy little shits". but there my daughters favorite bird. so i keep a bag of mix seed just for them, but i act like i dont like them just to rass her. thanks coach bill, and good luck with that baby thing, if you need a name picked out dont be afraid to ask me i got a million of them. lol.. |

Title: Re: for George... Post by Melissa on Feb 18th, 2008, 12:09pm Ok, the woodpecker is back. I got a better pic of it (and no, no red on it's breast, only white)... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/mfiltz/dsc009542.jpg The only thing I can't figure out right now, is why it is just sitting there by the fat/seed dish like that for the past 20 min?? Maybe it's as curious about me as I am of it. [smiley=huh.gif] Oh good, it's eating now. BTW, those are big birds! He/she IS the size of a jay, only a bigger head. :) |

Title: Re: for George... Post by Paul98 on Feb 18th, 2008, 12:30pm Hmmm.... Woody peckers Smaller peckers Hairy peckers Fast peckers.....This has all the makings of an obscene thread! Sorry Mel, sombody had to say it ;;D Nice Pics Mel! I love woodpeckers. I have a Piliated (sp?) one in the woods next to my camp and in the summer he can make quite a racket. The suit is a good thing for the birds this time of year and considering the winter you folks have had I'll bet his body fat is low and needs the energy in the fat. -P. |

Title: Re: for George... Post by Melissa on Feb 18th, 2008, 12:35pm lol Paul, reminds me of when we were fishing up north. Kept hearing something that sounded like a person trying to put nails in metal. Turns out a woodpecker was pecking at a TV anntenae, LOL! Too funny. :) |

Title: Re: for George... Post by Paul98 on Feb 18th, 2008, 12:46pm Thank God woodpeckers aren't nocturnal! I have one by my house and for years I would hear this shrill sound and could not figure out where the sound was coming from and it drove me nuts. It sounded very similar to toads but was much, much louder. I finally saw that it was a woodpecker and it's mate. They would be in the trees calling to one another and moving around so the sound seemed to come from everywhere. LOL -P. |

Title: Re: for George... Post by George_J on Feb 18th, 2008, 1:07pm Here's what Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers look like side-by-side: http://schmidling.com/hairy.jpg From your comments on its size, it could easily be a Hairy Woodpecker. For a good description of the field marks distinguishing the two, see: http://www.wikihow.com/Tell-the-Difference-Between-Downy-and-Hairy-Woodpeckers Can't see the tail. Is it pure white? Both birds live in your area. Best, George |

Certainly not the smartest of God's creatures. We've had them hammering away at the brick exterior of our home. Lots of live bugs in those bricks - not. |
