Title: Stranded...update
Post by E-Double on Feb 11th, 2008, 11:11am
So my lovely 2001 Honda Accorde sputtered on my way up to CT. this morning.
It takes forever to get a tow and I am waiting here in WhitePlains NY @ a Honda service center.
Which is far from the luxury that they have on LI.
What a pain in the a$$ !!

thank g-d this place has wi-fi.

Maybe this will be the occasion for the job to by me a car. ::)
If they want me to do the job.....

E

Your employer should, at the very least, be paying you mileage (which should, in turn, be used for maintaining your buggy).

One way or the other, it sounds like you might want to either a) get them to buy you a company car, or b) put a crowbar in your wallet and buy one yourself. ;)

they pay a nice % of expenses.
I write off my mileage.

We were hoping to get at least 1 yr without car payments since both our cars are finally paid off. That would be an extra 11k for the year and now that I have to pay a lot more for family plan insurance it would be too much.

Hopefully they'll hook me up with something

This has to be a mistake. Hondas don't break down. Just ask anyone.  ;)

Seriously.......once you get back to your regular service shop they may find it's an inexpensive fix.

It's the plates, dude.  The LI plates.

You need some sort of stealth plates if you're going to do the going-out-of-town thing on a regular basis.

Best,

George

Post by E-Double on Feb 11th, 2008, 8:17pm
yeah it was frigid!

So get this...

I decide to go with my gut and tell them to just do my oil as it is burning like crazy and that should get me home safely.

I bring it to my dealership....

they do a full diagnostic for free and tell me.....

The other guys were full of shit.
I nearly got f#$ed without even a reacharound....

I don't need anything the other place said but because I am going through oil so fast that the only way to really keep it running well is to change every 500 -750miles.

That should keep it going ok.

UGH!!!

I need to squeeze as much out of this.

Honda and Nissan  make great cars. My current car is a 1995 Nissan Pulsar, bought it new and driven it since without it ever broken down. It has now done 176000 kms and still going strong.

Yo E!  Sorry you're having car troubles.  My wife had a 2000 Honda Accord.  Sweet ride.  We put almost 60k miles on it in the first couple years and never had a bit of trouble out of it.

You really shouldn't be "going through" oil like that if there's nothing wrong with your car.  The oil has to be going somewhere.  Either it's burning it, in which case there may be bad rings, head gasket or valves, or it's leaking, in which case you may have any of a number of bad gaskets or seals.

If your oil gets really "dirty" very quickly, it could be because of bad rings allowing exhaust gases to blow by the rings into the crankcase.

If it's burning it, you'll probably notice smoke, especially at higher rpm's.  This could mean bad rings or a bad head gasket.  Sometimes, you can tell if it's the valves, because it will smoke when you first start the engine, but then stop after a few minutes.  This is because a valve seal and/or valve guide has worn and oil is puddling on top of the valve and dumps into the cylinder all at once when you first start the car.

If it's leaking, you would usually be seeing oil spots on the driveway, but not always.  Sometimes, when a seal is failing (but not yet gone), the oil won't leak until it the oil pressure gets high enough, like when you are driving.  If this is the case, you should be able to look underneath and see where it is blowing back against the undercarriage as you drive.

These are a few things that immediately come to mind.  Having to change your oil every 500 miles sounds like a problem to me, especially on a car like a Honda Accord that is put together so tightly.

Good luck with it, my brother.

My 94 Chevy Astro van has 249k miles and some change on it and it runs great.  Knock wood.

My luck, now that I have bragged on it, it will die a miserable death tomorrow.   :P

The last time I was at White Plains Honda--they walked around with Sushi and Sashimi. It was truly a wonderful experience. The last time I was in Long Island they treated me like a prospective Moonie Child --trying to feed me nothing but a protein diet , hoping I would sell daisies at the Fordham Road exit in the Bronx.

One word for you.

Subaru.

My '91 Legacy fishing car had 247,000 miles on it when I sold it and got another Legacy.  Still ran great, but it was so beat up from bombing around on the Forest Service roads around here that it was a scandal--stuffing coming out of the seats, spots of primer and patches of Bondo speckled all over the original turd brown color, cockeyed bumpers, and a great gouge along the driver's side, earned while squeezing past a fallen log on an unmaintained Jeep trail.

Other fishermen even remarked on how ugly it was.

If my Subaru had been a dog, it would have looked like this:

I still got a thousand bucks for it.

Best,

George

Edit to add:

Dunno about a Ford.  My brother-in-law has a Ford Excalibur. (Or Exchequer, or Exploder, or Excrement, or something like that....can't remember exactly--I have episodic CH, and my verbal memory is shot.)  He gave his car an Indian name.  Its name is "Black Cloud Follows".

Lia (owner) seems to run a tight ship at his dealerships.

120K on a well kept car is nothing. I agree with Gator, that oil is going somewhere. I'd be interested to know where they think it's going.

Not bragging due to karma but there is a Jeep in my driveway with 245K on the original drivetrain. If it blows tomorrow, I'm still ahead.

Bill

Daniel has the same sentiment when it comes a FORD. He reckons FORD stands for " Found On Rubbish Dump " or " Fix Or Repair Daily " !   ;;D

I'm with allof the Honda lovers! I found Lisa's 98 Civic in 2001 when I was covering tables with classified ads for my art class. She had already saved most of the money and we helped her finance the rest. She took it to college. At graduation my Dad offered her his 2004 Volkswagon Beetle with 23,000 miles and she very politely said no thanks(Her brother thought she was crazy). Her Civic has about 110,000 on it and is going stong. I bought a brand new (sorry Jonny) Civic Oct. 2006 and love it.  I have had 3 Toyotas as well and have LOVED them too. I gave my son my 1st Camry with 150,000 miles and he got another 120,000. I love japanese cars, resale value is great as well as dependability!

Drive 'em out, and roll 'em in.

Well, we buy only vehicles built with GM parts because Jesse knows how to work on those plus my brother-in-law is a mechanic. (very rarely though do we ask him to look at ours)

That being said, we have a 2001 Toyota Corolla (Jesse's work car because he puts on about 60 miles a day going to and from work) and a 1997 Pontiac Bonneville (my car).  Both have well over 100,000 miles on them.  We're also buying a Suburban within a month and it'll probably have over 100,000 miles on it too (Jess wants to pay no more than $5000 for it).

We've never bought new.

Sorry for all the crap you're having to go through Eric!! :-*
