Title: Re: Saturday night I was downtown.............. Post by seasonalboomer on Feb 8th, 2008, 9:54pm Halfway would have been somewhere between Boston and Detroit, but now halfway between Boston and Charlotte is what, Charlottesville, VA? That's no fun (unless you're 21 and goingto UVA) By the way - I need to be up there in the next 60 days. Who's going to meet up with me in beantown? |

Title: Re: Saturday night I was downtown.............. Post by chewy on Feb 8th, 2008, 9:58pm How long you here for? |

Title: that day. Post by seasonalboomer on Feb 8th, 2008, 10:01pm I'll probably try to schedule an overnight when the Bruins are playing. In the day of Bruins for business and leave some time next day with more business that day. Client's are downtown. |

Title: Re: Saturday night I was downtown.............. Post by Groov on Feb 8th, 2008, 10:09pm Weird, I just got done breaking in my latest acquisition, an 80's Tama Artstar snare drum, to The Hollies Long cool woman...and I come here & find it. Kool tune, nice & easy 1/4 note groove...even I can nail that one ;) |

Yup Brew. I like to play On a Carousel. It's 1/8th note & has like 16th note fills between the snare & floor tom(s) Jonny, go spank your monkey. |

Oh yes, something about timing in simple 4/4 I once heard a local band play Long Cool Woman, but he played it in 1/8th note. It just didn't sound right. Too busy. The original is played 1/4 note, is simple and fits just right. Covers can be played anyways you want, but 1/8th note is just a bad choice for that tune. Timing: try this one Jonny....play "Tell Her No" by The Zombies. It too is simple 4/4 time 1/8th note. But, there are 16th note snare hits in between (best I can describe it) If you don't get those perfectly in time or nailed...it falls apart. The other guys will be angry...you know. One of the best timekeepers I know was Ringo. He wasn't flashy, but his timing was impeccable !!!! His grooves seem simple, but they were played in perfect time. I still find his one handed 16th notes on the hihats very hard to replicate his way. I am working on the Moeller method for foot & hand to get those 16th notes with the ostinatto hand without using 2 hands...difficult. Cheers, Dave |

Title: Re: Saturday night I was downtown.............. Post by Groov on Feb 8th, 2008, 10:41pm You should check out Tony Royster Jr...Jonny. He started out like maybe 4 years old & by 19 was probably one of the best Jazz drummers I had seen in a long time. He's fire...check him out: http://youtube.com/watch?v=WPncumXZExo |

Title: Re: Saturday night I was downtown.............. Post by Groov on Feb 8th, 2008, 10:46pm Here he is again: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Z-ZWxmaVuWk Notice he isnt just hitting & making mostly noise. Check the timing...not just the fancy WOW stuff. His timing is great. Imaging how good he is now that he's something like 25 !!! |

Title: Re: Saturday night I was downtown.............. Post by Groov on Feb 8th, 2008, 10:51pm Here is legendary Dennis Chambers with Tony. DC is very well known amongst drummers. Those flashy hair bands doing noisy double bass chops cant hold a candle to Dennis...check him out about 3/4's of the way thru: http://youtube.com/watch?v=-GlM4vpCEoc |

Title: Re: Saturday night I was downtown.............. Post by Groov on Feb 8th, 2008, 10:56pm Check out Dennis here...this is so badass !!! No, that is only his right foot on the bass !!! Count the 1/4 notes on the hats 1,2,3,4 in perfect time eh? He is using that Moeller method on the bass drum. Super fast and only one foot !!! You better believe it ;) http://youtube.com/watch?v=U6c5_5WdAmY |

Title: Re: Saturday night I was downtown.............. Post by Groov on Feb 8th, 2008, 11:13pm Here is a good example of the Moeller method: http://youtube.com/watch?v=IIZvlVyYRRg You would be surprised to know how many professional drummers who make millions of dollars in popular bands who are not aware of this. But it's an exciting technique I work each nite on. They make it look easy, but it takes a very long time to master. It can get really frustrating, but you have to keep practicing if you are gonna get it. Funny, once you "get" something...it seems easy ;) |

Title: Re: Saturday night I was downtown.............. Post by Groov on Feb 9th, 2008, 12:23am Check out this guy Jonny: http://youtube.com/watch?v=GvWrDsMphoE He does a great job of breaking down a difficult groove. Check out the lowly 1/4 notes and how they change to become a difficult shuffle beat. That is why your timing has to be perfect as possible to go from tunes like Long cool woman to Fool in the rain. I like this guys teaching style !!! Cheers, Dave |

Title: Re: Saturday night I was downtown.............. Post by Groov on Feb 9th, 2008, 12:46am Gotta see this girl drummer: http://youtube.com/watch?v=cK4g4WtVe7o Notice how she is in time and doesn't have to move the arms much. Watch the snare for the quiet ghost notes..she does em perfect !!! The double bass sounds good too !!! |
