Title: Coyotes - got a question???? Post by BarbaraD on Jan 17th, 2008, 5:15am Anyone know of a way to rid themselves of coyotes? I've got a BIG problem with them (as does everyone here in East Texas). They're taking over the place. They were roaming the woods around my place, but the last week or so they've started coming up to the house. I'm having to keep my dogs in the house at night (this is not my idea of fun! - they are OUTSIDE dogs!). Ya'll know I can't see worth a darn in the daytime and at night I'm almost blind, but the last few nights I've been out with the gun and shooting at the darn things (my dogs are terrified of guns - great protection they are!). Of course I haven't hit anything but it scares them off for a little while. Only one or two come up at a time (the decoys), but the pack in lying in wait. The stupid dogs aren't too bright and will chase them if I don't keep them in. I'm fond of my dogs so they have to stay in to keep them alive and I'm not enjoying that much, but don't have a clue how to get rid of the coyotes. I've got wild hogs on one side of the road and coyotes on the other... There are disadvantages to living in the country too. Anyone got ideas -- I'm open to suggestions... Hugs BD |

Title: Re: Coyotes - got a question???? Post by Jackie on Jan 17th, 2008, 5:22am Damn Barb...so much for life in the country ;;D Are you shooting at them with a shotgun? If not try a 12 gauge with some 6 shot hot loads....better chance of hitting something.... ;) You might not kill one but you could put some lead in them. Good Luck... Jackie Oh...one more thought.... Have you got any trappers around there and is it legal? There was, at one time, a good market for coyote pelts. They make beautiful coats... :D |

Title: Re: Coyotes - got a question???? Post by BarbaraD on Jan 17th, 2008, 5:47am Yeah Jacks - at night you can sit outside and hear shotguns going off all over the place - the neighbors are having the same problem. And we're coming up on a full moon.... I can't understand why they don't just go across the road and go after the hogs. Kill two birds with one stone so to speak. The damn things must work for the government! ;;D So far we've trapped about 20 hogs and they're still running everywhere. In years past we've had wolves, an occasional bear, panthers, but have never had a problem with coyotes. I know it's interrupting my "sleep pattern" -- I'm spending half the night shooting at varmits and the rest of the night soothing down hyper dogs.... not good.... I just don't do loosing sleep well..... Hugs BD |

Title: Re: Coyotes - got a question???? Post by midwestbeth on Jan 17th, 2008, 9:41am I've noticed a big increase in the population in the last few years. Can't keep the windows open at night in the spring because of the noise they make. Talk to the local conservation or agricultural office's and see if they have any recommedations. In Illinois, special permits are required to trap during off season. I have Siberian Husky's. They are the best dogs at keeping the coyotes away from the house. Other dogs in the area have not been so lucky. Good Luck Barb Beth |

Yep that works pretty good. I used it on foxes and yotes last year. Here's another way. Lock up your meat eatin pets. Tell all your neighbors to lock up their meat eatin pets. Dog food in a paper bag soaked in prestone kills em dead. Potter |

Title: Re: Coyotes - got a question???? Post by kcopelin on Jan 17th, 2008, 11:50am Well Barb, dang, I've never had this problem before. I do know that creating a perimeter around your space, be it campsite or yard, of human urine works in keeping wild critters out. Must enlist men in this, as they have better aim. I realize this sounds like total malarkey ::) but it's not I swear. Don't know if it will work with coyotes or how much space you want to defend. Kathy |

Title: Re: Coyotes - got a question???? Post by BarbaraD on Jan 17th, 2008, 4:29pm I think I'll try the hooks and maybe the prestone -- if I put it on the hill away from the house (about 1/2 mile from house) maybe the pack will go for it. The dogs don't go up there. I'm usually the first one to yell about cruelty to animals, but right now -- it's survival and I'm not pickey about the coyotes. Wonder if the hooks would work on the darn hogs too? Might try that on them also. Might have to put those up with chains - those darn things are BIG! Thanks for the advice. These darn things are interrupting my sleep at night and us old people NEED our sleep!!!! ;) Hugs BD |

Title: Re: Coyotes - got a question???? Post by Kevin_M on Jan 17th, 2008, 4:52pm I don't know if a gas-powered pellet gun would sting enough in the hindquarters, but if you could hit them in your vicinity often enough, they may get the message. It's silent but night vision would be required. |

This may be the most effective and cruelty free option. Unfortunately it has to be done on a regular basis, LOL. I'm not sure if Caleb's smells any "younger" than an older guy, but if these coyotes haven't lost their fear of humans, marking around the outside of your property will keep them out. Dog urine won't work because I'm sure they consider dogs lower on the food chain. Perhaps some neighbor men (or teen boys) would be willing to, um, help out? (I know how it sounds, but I'm not kidding.) Good luck, nani ...who can hear coyotes in the distance at night |

Do this, but don't bury them. throw them on the property line. The others will get the message. DO NOT TELL PEOPLE that your doing this. It is illegal in Texas. |

Title: Re: Coyotes - got a question???? Post by BarbaraD on Jan 18th, 2008, 6:38am Nani, we'd all be peed dry -- this is a BIG place -- about 30 acres just around the house - all open space... That may be the reason they haven't come right up on the porch yet - Caleb does pee off the porch.... It's raining and cold this morning -- maybe they'll go find a cave and hibernate for a while. I'm sick of 'em.... :) Hugs BD PS Matt - it's not against the law to kill the critters is it? Please tell me it's not.... If it is I'm gonna be yelling bloody murder to the powers that be in Austin.... |

Title: Re: Coyotes - got a question???? Post by jimmers on Jan 18th, 2008, 1:53pm Do it like they do for wolves in Canada. Shoot them in the guts, it won't kill them right away. They'll go back to their dens and die and the other ones will eat them. No evidence! Oh by the way. As VVTT said "Antifreeze" works wonders! Jimmers |

Title: Re: Coyotes - got a question???? Post by Maffumatt on Jan 18th, 2008, 2:42pm No its not against the law to kill them, its just against the law to kill them with hooks. They end up drowning on their own blood, its a hard death. I always used traps with about 5 ft of 9 wire tied to them. After they were caught I could pull the 9 wire through a cage and shut the door. Then haul them off. I don't like to kill if I don't have to. But that would be a little hard for you to do. I don't like to use poison either, you end up killing the coons, foxes, and all the rest of the carnivorous out there too, if you do use traps, remember to check them daily, its inhumane to leave an animal in a trap for days on end. |

Title: Re: Coyotes - got a question???? Post by Paul98 on Jan 18th, 2008, 3:27pm Barb- Only one thing will draw cyotes in and that is food. Either you all have a hearty rodent population or folks are leaving garbage out for the picking. If you have ranchers with goats or sheep they will go after that but I cant see a rancher tollerating that. Get rid of the food and you get rid of the cyotes. If it is rodents then in a year when that population collapses the cyotes will go too. -P. |
