Title: IRS is antiquated!
Post by Sandy_C on Jan 12th, 2008, 2:24pm
Today is a work day for me.  Been here since 8:30 doing corporate tax stuff.  Taking a short break to VENT!!!!!

In my business, I do it all.  I am technically a lighting designer and prepare photometric printouts for exterior lighting.  I then sell the products to the customer.

But, I am also the "office manager", for our parent company, and corporate "secretary and treasurer" for the sister company.

In this capacity.....I do the books (and no, I don't cook them  ;)

Every two weeks, I can electronically submit payroll withholding to the IRS to the Department of the Treasury.  I can file, submit and print year end W-2 forms online with the Social Security Administration.

But, try to do that electronically with an IRS form 1099, which is for information purposes for income to someone other than payroll, such as commission income.  The IRS 1099 forms are printed with "scannable" red ink, and come in a packet with the red original on top, and four copies underneath, that must be manually typed on a typewriter.  There is no other way to transmit this information to the IRS.  I've written, I've called and spoken with them.  Even the person I spoke with said this is antiquated!

We have a typewriter in our office.  It's used once a year to type 1099 forms.  We can no longer purchase the ink ribbons for it, the daisy wheel for it, or parts for it.  The IRS tells me to go buy a new typewriter!

They also tell me that if I submit 1099 forms that are not scannable with their "special" ink, we will be fined.

CRAP!

Any IRS people out there with some suggestions?  It would be appreciated.

Sandy

I'm with you..... I use CFS software.... I can print the 1099s to send out but have to use the damn RED forms to send to the IRS.

SO... I just tear off the damn RED form (off the 4 part form) and run it thru the nice computer (laser) and do the same with the 1098 and send it to the nice people at the IRS -- If it hits the right lines fine - if it doesn't TUFF - let them figure it out!!!

Been doing that for years and haven't heard a damn thing from them.

This will probably work on your accounting software just as well...

BTW -- what's a typewriter???? [smiley=huh.gif]  I think we had one in our office one time or nuther...

W2s are all scanable - go figure.... I complain every year, but guess they just don't listen -- I just keep ordering a LOT of those forms and they just keep printing them -- the paperwork reduction act ya know... ;;D

Seriously - if you have any trouble - let me know....

Hugs BD
