Title: Re: I'm just short of being a solid! Post by DennisM1045 on Jan 11th, 2008, 4:27pm I just had my annual physical and got the blood work done today. I should know my numbers soon. Hope they look better than yours echo. Ouch! :o I used to work with a guy back in the day at Wang Labs. They had McDonalds serving meals in the lobby of one of the towers in Lowell MA. Paul ate breakfast, lunch and dinner there for six months. Couldn't for the life of him figure out why he felt like shit. ::) Went to his Dr and found out his colesterol was approaching 800! Doc told him he had crystals in his veins and to stop stuffing french fried in them. He quit McD's and had his numbers straightened out in a matter of a month or two. Long story short ... I've seen higher numbers ;;D -Dennis- |

Title: Re: I'm just short of being a solid! Post by brewcrew on Jan 11th, 2008, 4:45pm Here's the way my doc explained it to me: You can only control your serum cholesterol level by 15-20% of its natural number through diet and exercise. That's why this is such a popular method for people who are borderline. Take my example. Unmedicated, my total cholesterol is 400. If I ate salad and water for the rest of my life but didn't take any meds, I could probably drop it to 320. Still dangerously high. People in this range (and Mark, you seem to be one of these) are missing one of the two DNA receptors that govern cholesterol production in the liver. When you're missing both, your cholesterol can soar over 1000. These are the folks that used to drop dead in their late 20's and early 30's. Chances are you're missing one of the two receptors and you'll need to be on Lipitor or Zocor or some such for the rest of your life. I take 20mg of Zocor a day - the last time I had my cholesterol checked (about 6 months ago) it was 176. You decide. |

Title: Re: I'm just short of being a solid! Post by echo on Jan 11th, 2008, 4:53pm I'll be on something this evening. Not Lipitor - for one it triggered alopecia 6 years ago. 2 - makes my legs ache. We'll see what this new one does for me. Blood test in 6 weeks to see what has changed. |

Title: Re: I'm just short of being a solid! Post by Cathi_Pierce on Jan 11th, 2008, 4:59pm I'm sorry, Mark, gotta chime in here..... LIPITOR is the reason we call you our cueballistic studdmuffin, isn't it? Next choice............... Cathi who wants Echo echoing for as long time to come! |

Title: Re: I'm just short of being a solid! Post by Grandma_Sweet_Boy on Jan 11th, 2008, 5:01pm The guy that shares house and home with me is on 80mg. of Crestor now. He was on the same dose of Lipitor but his cardiologist has told us that research shows Crestor does a better job of raising the good cholesterol. Once you're on those drugs - grapefruit in any form is a no-no. We were part of a 5 year research programme following Bill's heart attack and one of the things we were told was that it's best to take this type of med as close to bed time as possible. It supposedly does it's best work when your body is sleeping! Good luck Carol |

Title: Re: I'm just short of being a solid! Post by Annette on Jan 11th, 2008, 5:14pm If its not your diet and its not other meds that you are on that made your cholesterol count goes up, then you can safely blame your parents for giving you the wrong set of genes :P |

Basically a true statement! I also had mine checked today along with a complete physical. BP 120/80, it hasn't been that good in 3 years so I was extremely happy about that. I also have to take my first stress test on Feb 1st. Don't know about the cholesterol yet, but last time it was 180 with 20 mg zocor. Geeze, I remember when 220 was borderline! Get on something Echo! I know people who also had trouble with Lipitor, but Crestor works great for them. Jimbo |

Title: Re: I'm just short of being a solid! Post by Tiannia on Jan 11th, 2008, 7:50pm Cholestoral - 415 Triglycerides (sp?) - 568 Good Cholestoral - no freaking clue We are a good pair there echo. My doc here had / still has me on Lipator for 8 months by itself and now I'm in Tri - something as well. I am supposed to do blood work next month and see if it is helping. I eat really well and the doc has no clue why it is so high except that it is hereditary |

Title: Re: I'm just short of being a solid! Post by DonnaH_again on Jan 11th, 2008, 11:46pm Triglicerides were 573 and went on TroCor, which really brought it down, but can not take any statin or it really tears my intestines up. My bad cholestoral is up a few notches above normal, and my good is down. So there is stays. |
