Title: Crasy azz idea but thought maybe...
Post by Redd on Jan 6th, 2008, 11:53pm
I don't know if anyone here is familiar with something called "Free Cycle"  Many communities have yahoo message boards where people either offer an item they want to get rid of, (for free) or post a need they might have. Better to give away than to toss in a landfill if at all possible.

I've been watching the local "free cycle" site for a couple months and anything goes, from bags of appolstery fabric scraps, half used cans of pain, odds and ends table ware, to electronics and furniture.

Although we can't just drive a few blocks and pick something up, I thought maybe, just maybe, that would be a cool idea that this family could involve in as well.  Help each other out.

Here's how I thought it could work if Deej and Steph thought it a good idea too.

Make another board, first and foremost.  The way it would work is that people offer whatever item (legal of course) Like a 4 foot high cd storage tower for example.  Get the flat rate shipping cost and post that too.

The taker PM's and sends a check for the shipping and the item gets shipped.

If someone posts they have a want for say...a cd storage tower.  A person who has one they wnat to get rid of PM's with the flat rate shipping fee, the check gets mailed and the item shipped.

Just a thought, and I won't be hurt if anyone thinks the idea sucks.

Just seemed to dawn on my that we all help each other out when we can..this might be another way to do so.

I'll give somebody my full ones. All of them.  8)

Is this a CH site or a Yankee Swap site?

Personally I vote for keeping it a CH site.

Can't be any crazier than the "song Game"   or the Intelligence I.Q education for children.  Neither of which has one heck of a lot to do with anything regarding any of us or CH.

I have something to sell Pegg.   One Chewy.  Slightly used...funny as hell...will work for food.

Any takers?  I'll start the bid at .50cents.  or is that...fiddysens?   ;;D

We have been doing that on Craig's list for the past year. We were able to get rid of a water bed mattress and a part to a sail boat, both had no use to us. We missed out on getting a hot tub that someone just wanted to get rid of. If it doesn't work here, try that source. Just a thought.

I use freecycle all the time.

Half of the stuff in my basement has gone on to good homes dues to freecycle.  And the people taking it are so appreciative!

I got THIRTEEN bowling balls at one time off of freecycle.  If I would have had to have them shipped it would have been cost prohibitive.

Free cycle, Craigs List, Ebay, etc. etc.

There are already numerous outlets.

If you want it to be specifically for CHers then create a site and ask DJ to link it.

It half a buck.

Don, I think Redd was just talking about CH'ers helping CH'ers.  Keeping it in the family, know what I mean?  Or should I have to 'splain it?

Greating a bargain board will draw people other than CHers.

"Now that I've gotten rid of my my pots and pans maybe I can sell my Cure-All Batshit concoction to the headache people."

Creates another avenue for  Witch Doctors.

I use free cycle and craigs list also.  I just free cycled some old childrens books of mine out the door to a family that home schools.  I have to say I agree with Chewy that if we open a bargain board we are risking inviting in people that do not have ch and since these sites already exist we just keep everything as is.

ok - but maybe if DJ did it like the ALUMNI BOARD where only some can see it....

that way - it's REALLY only family.
no one else could sell their sheiit... just us - Ch.com'ers and our OWN sheiit.   :-*

just an idea..............

Well...the idea wasn't about selling anything at all.  It was about giving away things that would otherwise end up being tossed in the dumpster.  It would be up to the givee to decide if they want to pay for the shipping or not, but the item itself is offered for free.

As I said, crazy idea.  Just thought maybe it could be as Mel said, keeping it in the family.

Baby clothes, books, ...

Oh well...I guess local free cycle it will continue to be then.

:( Deej never made me an alumni.

Anyway I dont see how it would be a bad idea.  I think that there are things that people have that could be used by others here.

Why should Deej have to do it? He already provides no less than 33 boards here.

Design your own site and have DJ link it.

I don't think it is a bad idea at all Pegg.

The only reservation is what Chewy said. I'd be afraid too many not-interested-in-ClusterHA would come & muck up the board.

Other than that, one mans junk.......

As above mentioned, a donation in support for this site puts alumnus below your name.
