Title: We got us a project . . . (updated 1/26)
Post by Mosaicwench on Jan 5th, 2008, 8:46pm
I've watched the grout at the base of the tub get wet after a shower . . . . I've watched the tiles seem to bow in that same spot . . . . . so I get out a putty knife and start prying . . . .
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2065/2170645942_639c480e56.jpg?v=0

The putty knife went straight through two layers of drywall under the tiles.

The back of the shower wall was wet . . . . cuz the tub spout was leaking in to the crawl space below . . . .
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2198/2169849931_e8ea1dc92a.jpg?v=0

Guess we'll be busy for awhile tearing off old tile and wall board and rebuilding.  We've done it before at a different house and we'll just hunker down and do it again.  The kicker is this is our ONLY bathroom.

You may smell us before you see us at Davcon!

After you've replaced everything that you need to...MOSAIC the whole damn shower stall.  Bet that will fix the problem for the future.   ;;D

Plumbing problems like this are the stuff of my nightmares.  Good luck to you guys.  Off you go to Home Depot.

Sean, E-Dub - You're hired. I'm getting too old for this.

I've got two M tanks, a couple frozen pizzas, and a 6-pack of Mountain Dew with your names on them.

Linda - I'd LOVE to mosaic this  . . . . really!

But it's our ONLY bathroom and I have a smelly teenager to consider (as well as being menopausal myself and poor Brew who's just along for the ride . . . ):-/

Design and execution would take way too long and I don't think I can stand to smell our whole family that long . . . .

Pow.

Actually, when we did this in our first house, we "showered" over the floor drain in the basement with a hose hooked up to the wash tubs. As we were nearing the end of the second week, Pat got out of the "shower stall" and saw a centipede on her clothes.

Needless to say, we finished in less than 48 hours.

Don't you have any nice friends near by who allow you to shower at their place until your bath is fix? You can come over here and shower at any time  :). I have two baths, I can share, no problem  :).

Of course we do. That is the plan, but it's a major disruption to do so.

Thanks for the offer though, Rosy.  ;;D

Bill and Pat,

I live pretty close to you guys and would be glad to help. I'm a pretty handy guy. Just gimme a call or PM me.

It doesn't look like whoever tiled it the first time didn't use cement backer board. Tile on top of drywall is a "repair job" waiting to happen.

In the words of Spicoli in "Fast times at Ridgemont High"

"I can fix it" ;;D

If you duct tape heavy plastic to that wall, showering shouldn't be a problem.

OK, Bob the builder ... we can fix it ! What about Bill ?  ;;D

Last time we had to fix my mothers bathroom, everyone went to the local swimming pool to use the showers there, at $1.20 per visit it wasnt too bad and it didnt cause disruption to anyones home.

Jimmers - We've actually taken an entire bathroom down to the studs and built it back up, including new backer, tile, doors, vanity, and medicine cabinet made by hand. I really appreciate the offer, and if we do need help, I'll give a shout.

We're thinking about replacing the wet gypsum with backer board then installing a tub surround with new doors. If we provide the labor, that kind of thing can be done relatively cheaply, and we don't have to go through the hell that is tiling.

Annette - Showering at a neighbor's house, while an inconvenience, is certainly better than a sharp stick in the eye. It beats having centipedes crawling around on your underwear. [smiley=laugh.gif]

I'm so sick of the smell of wet drywall!!!

I pulled the soap dish out of the wall and found an acorn in a nest of newspaper from 1976.  I made Brew pull out the nest - it was just too creepy for me.:P

Yup jimmers, two layers of sheetrock - no cement backer to be found.  We'll do it the right way this time.
We've gone back and forth all day about tile vs. tub surround vs. a "bath fitter" kinda thing.  I think we'll end up with a surround just cuz it'll get us back showering sooner and has less chance of causing the same kind of problems in the future.

Thank you all for your kind offers of help . . . I actually get into the "zen" of destruction but my back protests when I do it too long without a break . . . .and I'm getting older every minute!!

Mom went through that not that long time ago. In her case, there's a toilet and a bathroom with a toilet. She's not one of those women who can do DIY, so she hired some local firm to do it. I cannot recall how long it took, but because it took place during the summer, she missed her vacation time - but got two nice, renovated rooms. :)

I used to do this for a living, new homes, renovations ect. As you already know the main thing is to make sure there is no mold left behind! You both know what you are doing.

Best of luck, it is a big job.

I'm sure you would. And square corners are for anal retentives.

This thing will be done long before then. I'm thinking Tuesday. Maybe Wednesday.

I gotta wake up first. Off to pour a second cup.

2nd loo? Possibly in the basement, but that would require moving walls, breaking up the floor for the plumbing, etc. One step at a time, grammaw.

With Mel and me "helping" you, this job should be done in no time at all!

Seriously though - it's one nasty project and I honestly do wish you well with it.

My kids recently went through the same mess in their place.  Fortunately they have a second bathroom so although it was a little inconvenient, it wasn't nearly the disruption yours is going to be.

Our toilet was replaced about a year ago and works just fine, thank-you-very-much.  That's a great blessing in this mess.  As long as I can use the toilet in my own home I know everything's gonna be ok. ;)

I'm very glad to see that there is no structural damage thus far.  We've got almost all the tile off the walls and then it's time to take a whack at the drywall.

We looked at new vanity set-ups yesterday and I think this is gonna become a whole bathroom remodel.  In stages as we can afford the pieces, but a remodel nonetheless.  Yee haw!

(He's 16 now, Linda - that's a BIG difference, donchaknow)

Anyway - we had the entire tub surround gutted down to the studs before he graced us with his presence this morning . . . :o  The tub shares a wall with the closet in his room.  He slept right through the hammering, sawing, flying debris and parental laughter!

To be fair he did carry the construction debris out to the garage while we went to Lowes.

Aww, you guys!
My heart goes out to you! Our home is 80 yrs old, and I think we had the original bathrooms :-/. We FINALLY hired a guy to come do all the updating AND add a powder bath as well............I hated hiking to the opposite part of the house in the middle of the night, just to answer nature's call.........and I resented showring in my son's bathroom.'
The plan was to work on one at a time, beginning with the powder bath, but we needed a plumber, so he had to do all his work at once for cost's sake........it's all over and my sense of humour is returning, but LORDIE! I DO hate remodels!
Our one, HUGE concession-which just might have saved our marriage..the only labor we provided was in wirting the checks..............

It's over now.........that is my mantra!

(we DO have some really pretty bafrooms if ya wanna come visit!)

Cathi-who prolly isn't much into manual labor-or camping for that matter!

Title: Re: We got us a project . . .
Post by Mosaicwench on Jan 6th, 2008, 5:19pm
Cathi - we actually work pretty well together.

When we bought our first house it was a BIG fixer-upper.  We learned what we can do together, what we can't, and what we should contract out.  We've learned plumbing, electrical, drywall, tile setting (both floor and wall), concrete work, patio laying, kitchen remodeling . . . .a whole lot!!!

We've done a lot of remodeling on every house we owned and it's been awhile since something needed doing in this house.  I've always hated this bathroom so perhaps this is the house's gentle nudge to get us moving again.  And even better, it happened at a lull in our lives!!  This will keep us busy until DavCon!

Now that I've finished a remodel of the inside of most of our house, you have my entire sympathy.

It's a pity that a vast distance separates our respective households, replete with dreadful hazards--the Continental Divide at midwinter, terrific storms on the Great Plains, packs of roving wolves, hunger-maddened Sasquatches and so forth--or I would, of course, be happy to come over and help.

So far, I have successfully put off our bathroom remodel by creating certain minor distractions that seem to have thrown the estrogen types off the trail, temporarily.  It has been quite peaceful here, but I don't expect that to last.

All the best wishes in your endeavor.

George

Update: Backer board is up, calling the plumber to install new tub/shower faucet today (cuz I want to have somebody to yell at if it doesn't work right). Going shopping for tub surround and shower doors today.

All in all, this project has gone pretty well so far. We got to take a shower at a friend's house last night, so we're good to go until tomorrow stank-wise. Making it all the more bearable is that the Wench and I work very well together, making projects like this so much more pleasant than they might be.

The shower water pressure in the room at Davcon sucked.  My infant son had more pressure when he used to pee on me!
Did I say that out loud?

And yes Jonny - we are STILL working on that.  When you do it yourself and things have to be ordered and cogitated upon, these things take time.  Not to mention that NOTHING is a standard size so we have to come up with very creative solutions.
