yesterday at work.

I was 30 feet down the side of the building having a smoke on my break. Not bothering anyone.

This lady walked down towards me and said. "You should quit you know. I am still breathing in your smoke."

I said "Are you my F.....king mother. What about that diesel truck that is running does that not bother you.

She walked away, I am sure she was proud of herself for her comments. I went back to work madder than hell.

I guess smoking outside is going to be taboo soon as well.

Got back to the lunchroom and some staff were laughing about me going outside in the cold for a smoke.

I told them keep up with me for a day I could out run them all.

My comment to the women who say those comments, (and yes they are mostly women) is that I'll quit when they shed that extra weight they are carrying around. That usually shuts them up.

Good point. You are right they are women mostly, and she was overweight. I am sure it will happen again and I will use that comment.

I would have understood her comments better if you had been smoking inside; but when you're outside, who cares? I'm a non-smoker and I get bit allergic reaction when there are smokers too close to me, so the quests at my house and at my childhood home will have to smoke outside at all times.

I'm a smoker - so is Brew.

We haven't smoked in our home for many years . . . 16 maybe? It's my addiction and inside I try not to infringe on others (except at Davcon where just breathing the air in the atrium means you're a smoker).

It's 19 degrees F right now (that's -7 C) and I have no problem smoking outside.

Anyone that tells me I can't smoke outside is gonna get hit with both barrels.

I'll go out in any weather without a jacket and my sleeves rolled up for a smoke. (today it was 3 deg. F.) people never bother me when I smoke. I never put it in their face and I am courtious but if some pudding of a woman or man 30 feet away made a comment about it I would probably flick a lit butt at them. ;;D

God I hate doing this.

I have to admit Paul is very courteous about smoking, he is completely considerate of me, I've never once had to ask him to move his fag or anything.

Now that hurt. I have to go and wake the kids up so I can wallop them after being that nice ::)

I do respect other peoples rights not to breathe smoke...it is their right. Dont want smokers in your house, I wont smoke when visiting...common courtesy you know?

Here is a wonderful new Fascist law passed by the ever-P.C. gov. ROD Blagoveitch ( I even hate his name)

Now, ALL Illinois businesses MUST stop all smoking in the buildings on THEIR property. You cant even put up a small smoking shed anywhere on your property. You can smoke outside 15 foot away from the building...hooray for rights!!!

That is correct, I own a shop, I cant smoke in it. Doesn't matter if all the employees agree to it or if the area in question is restricted to consenting employees only....you must stop...obey our will...we are the Govt. we are here to help you.

No bars are to allow smoking, even if they are private clubs (this one is in question so far)

Lookee here: it is un-Constitutional to tell any private business that it cannot allow legal activities on it's own property. I'm not gonna get into all the long details or Constitutional precedent, I will simply make my statement.
Some will understand and know, others will deny or continue to be ignorant....I don't care.

BTW, this was not ram-RODded thru as "discrimination" law. It clearly isn't a discrimination issue.

It was passed as a "health" issue. The States argument is that all Illinois workers have a right to a smoke free workplace.

If you don't like my smoke, then march your oppressive nanny-state ass outta my place.

If I want a smoking bar, it is my right to have one.

It is true that some obnoxious smokers have caused some of this attitude. The world is full of inconsiderate people, get used to it....unless you want to strip all rights and make everything "fair" for everyone.

As a smoker and a human being, I respect other peoples rights. Considering other peoples wants & needs is a very American attitude...or was at one time.
But stealing away rights serves only to diminish the rights of ALL people.

I am a smoker, and I always try to be courteous to everybody else. I know it is an awful habit, but when you have to go outside, sometimes in shitty weather you do it. I can understand someone saying something inside----but outside ?!?! That takes alot of balls and I would have told her to do something biologically impossible to herself.

Here in California its 20 ft from any entrance, and also in your own car if there is a minor in the car, and on some beaches.....
Now, careless smokers have caused fires which are a BAD thing here, but I've yet to see a wildfire start on the Pacific beaches (what with the waves which are made primarily of WATER, and the wet sand which has a high content of WATER)
Had a customer come up to me a few years ago and complain that she had to walk by smokers to get to my non-profit (which was there to give FREE legal and Medicare advice)-not knowing she was taking to the program manager. I suggested that she approach the front entrance the way most people do. I did apologize that she had had such a crappy day that she needed to vent on me.
Then I met her in my office ;;D
she received stellar service although I did point out that had she read the bold print on her Medicare statement she wouldn't be in such a pickle. Helped her, she felt happy, as a parting shot I explained that Medicare will cover O2, ahould ahe need that from visiting our program. 8)

I don't work there any more.....

I was a 30 year smoker and probably offended many people over the years but the day I quit smoking Angie said there will be no more smoking in the house and she took it outside from that day on.

For whatever reason I feel smokers are targets for comments. I see it at my work place daily. My boss is the only smoker and customers walk by him and make their smart-ass remarks to him all the time, even though he is outside! :-/

This "person" that commented to Angie doesn't know her very well as Angie is an athletic Mountain biker and could kick her ass into tomorrow if she wanted to! ;;D but Angie is a gentle soul and that is not her disposition. :)

Well.... I feel badly for all the smokers now that have to stand outside downtown buildings in blizzards. It's awful. I haven't smoked in 27 years but I do know how hard it is to quit. People who have never been there have no idea.

Over here; there are places with designated rooms for smoking in a number of bars and coffee shops and in my part of New York State, some bars and diners have waivers and smoking is allowed anywhere indoors. There must be half a dozen or more bars and restaurants in my little town that have smoking.

An even worse story is my best friend's creepy ingrate daughter that has been sponging off him for several months expecting free food and baby sitting while treating her family like dirt. When Tom comes in from smoking on the porch she goes into her lunatic rant that the second-hand smoke on his jacket is causing all her two and three-year old's colds. I'm afraid to go there because I would wind up behind bars after beating the little twerp to a pulp. I don't know how he does it.

Anyway; it's gotten too hard to smoke now. Good luck if you are quitting kids.
