Title: Preventative
Post by chbob on Jun 10th, 2007, 11:57am
It seems that many clusterheads stutter.

They say preventative instead of preventive.
Why don't they say:
Abortative
OR
Abusasive
OR
Adaptative
Or
Perceptative
OR
Adhesasive
OR
Perspectative
OR
...........

It's part of the repetetive recitative.  One person expostulatives it, and pretty soon we're all vocalitavizing it.  It's insidiousitive.

Best,

It's spelled both ways, preventative is ok too.

I use preventive when with another word as in "preventive medication" or "preventive measures" but use preventative when used alone as in "verapamil is a preventative for clusters", for some stupid reason.  :)

"Preventive" and "preventative" are two different words.  "Preventive" is an adjective, and "preventative" is a noun.  Your reason is not stupid - it's just proper usage! <g>
