Title: Don't mess with the jury
Post by Pellsey on Feb 2nd, 2007, 2:35am
A Lawyer is defending the biggest case of his life.  His client is a Don of the Mafia and is facing a murder charge and the evidence is stacked well against him.

A spokesman from the Mafia has a word in the Lawyer's ear and explains that if the Don goes down on Murder there will be another murder in the city soon after.  However, if the Don is found guilty of a lesser charge other than murder, say manslaughter which doesn't carry the death penalty then there could be quite a substantial reward.  The lawyer understood the undertones in the message and defended the case like he'd never defended a case before.  It was very hard however.  The crime was committed in broad daylight and there were many witnesses.  The Don was looking at spending the rest of his life behind bars as far as the Lawyer was concerned.  Possibly even the death penalty.

While standing in front of the court house having a smoke and contemplating writing up his will the Lawyer noticed one of the Jurors arriving late for court.  The Lawyer knew the repercussions of tampering with a jury but also knew the repercussions of not getting the Don off on something other than murder too.

"Excuse me sir" said the Lawyer.

"I can't talk to you" replied the Juror "You're the lawyer in this case that i'm on."

"I know, i know" said the Lawyer "but hear me out please?  I know the case against my client is pretty strong and he's not a very nice person but i need a big favour and i can make sure that the rewards for you will be great.  I don't need you to let him off or anything, i just need manslaughter instead of murder.  If you can persuade the rest to convict on manslaughter instead of murder i can guarantee you $10,000."

The Juror thought about it for about a minute and then told the Lawyer that he would see what he could do?

The trial ended and the jury were sent out to deliberate their verdict.

One hour, then two, then a day, then two days.  The Lawyer was sweating and hadn't slept much but he told the Don to keep up his hopes.  The Don told the Lawyer that he'd better keep his own hopes up.

Finally after four days of deliberations the Jury returned with a verdict.

"How say you ladies and Gentleman" asked the Judge "guilty or not guilty?"

"Not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter" replied the spokesman of the jury.

Everybody in the courtroom was flabbergasted.  Even the Don couldn't believe his luck.  People were furious.  The Lawyer was relieved.

The next day the Lawyer met up with the Juror that he had made the deal with and handed him the ten grand as promised.

"You have no idea how much i appreciated what you've done for me" said the Lawyer  "I thought for sure you wouldn't be able to do it, especially the length of time you took to return the verdict"

"It was very tough to persuade them all" said the Juror, "there were eleven of them and every one of them had decided that he was innocent and that they were going to let him go but i managed to convince them that he was guilty of manslaughter.  Glad to be of service and thanks for the cash"
