Title: If you could pick out any new laptop you wanted... Post by Roxy on Nov 7th, 2003, 11:28am what would you get? I have to pick out a laptop for my hubby (and get it ordered for Christmas), and I really don't know what to buy. We have three Dell laptops right now, and I know they hold up well.....but, I don't know what hardware to get on it. I just haven't kept up lately with all the stuff. Help please!! |

I am not too concerned with size, so I get the largest screen I can. Some of the others, are much smaller in overall size, but don't have the bigger screen. (I am an old fart, and like the larger size to give my old eyes a break! heehee) Also, make sure you get it with a cd rom reader/burner/DVD player. Another thing that I really like is the 12 volt adapter so that I can plug it in to my cigarette lighter in my car. This worked well when I took my girls with me on the drive to Massachusetts. It is a 14 hour drive, and the girls used my laptop to watch DVDs. Even though I have a spare battery, it would not have lasted for the whole trip without the adapter. And I agree with you. Don't worry to much aboout the wireless the 802.11x world is still shaking out. Just about anything will do the trick with Wi-Fi. Dell's tech support has been a bit rocky lately since they outsourced it to India and Panama or I would also recommend them. Just remember you love shopping. TTFN |

The only thing I wish I could have gotten, but didn't have the money for, was a DVD burner. My system has a cd-rw drive, external floppy drive, and a 20g hard drive. At that time service was damn good.....not now. I would still buy a Dell....but I am more likely to repair my own than depend on Dell's warranty. Sounds like a bad design to me. I can believe that Rimms would cost that much more or is the motherboard size hard on the buss speed? I guess that's why if I ever get a lap tp I will use it for a terminal for a tower. Opus/Paul |

First, I know Jim recommended that you sacrifice the extra 20GB for the speed of the HD. I'm not sure if I'd agree, Jim. I think it depends on how long you plan on making this laptop last. If you don't have a problem replacing a drive a year or 2 from now, then go with the speed. Otherwise, I would go with the extra size. Today's applications just keep getting bigger and bigger and with a DVD burner, you'll probably want the extra size if you plan on copying DVDs (even occasionally). 40GB is big (not huge) right now, but a year down the road, it won't be. Really, I think that for most applications and uses, the difference in speed would be minimal and you can NEVER have too much disk space. Probably the most common reason for upgrading a laptop (or purchasing a new one) is an undersized HD that originally was sufficient. Of course, if money is NOT a concern, you might as well go with the biggest, fastest drive you can find. Secondly, your (free) productivity-pack includes WordPerfect. Depending on what software Greg needs for work, you might want to look at Word (not neccessarily the newest, most expensive version. Older versions can be "creatively acquired" for little or no $$$ ;)) (Yeah, Opus - I know it sounds like I'm pushing MicroSlop products for Bill, but if Greg's using Word at work, why go with anything else?) just a couple of suggestions (I fully expect to have someone disagree with both. ::)) Otherwise, cat has done a GREAT job of steering you in the right direction. grant |

In fact I have only ever needed it with the desktop. If you want PISS POOR SERVICE buy a compaq NOT. Or a gateway. Both HP and Gateway have MULTIPLE complaints against them with the FTC. Dell has minor ones listed. And yes, from what I have been able to gather (and I am by no means an expert, just a geek) the motherboard size and the peripherals in a laptop are hard on the bus speed. Grant, yup, they will need office, but they already own a copy hehe, no point paying for it again ;) Cat |

That's all I can afford, I am looking for a PII/K6 and up. Grant, I have one of those office 2000 disks. It seems much more stable than 97 but it takes twice as long to find anything ( I hear xp is worse). I have used Wordperfect but it is very unstable on win98. I hear it's cool but it is geared mostly toward media. If you want cheap but good, my husband got a Sotec from Walmart... 1045.00 I think it was. 2.5 gig, 256 ram, 20 gig hard drive. cd reader/writer/dvd player. 15 1/2 inch lcd screen... 4 usb ports, 2 of those other weird ports LOL! A built in network card, built in v90 56k fax/modem and other stuff... The customer service seemed to be good too. Only thing is it's kinda heavy. Came with Win XP home, Works Suite 6.0, Easy CD Creator 5 (I think xp's in-house cd creator is MUCH easier LOL) and other stuff. They have updates and downloads on their site. Not a bad little computer. But that's if you don't want to spend a lot of money on stuff you might not need. Sotec may not be well known, but it was perfectly great for our needs. (He did get a USB mouse cuz he has a terrible time with those little finger pads!) |

Compaq notebook 2 GHZ AMD, 512 MB Ram, 40 Gig Hard Drive, CDRW-DVD, Floppy External Been a great computer so far with no problems and good battery life. Your husband would probably want to upgrade from home edition to professional XP. Does not come with wireless, but has port that will accommodate one. I'm sure you can find an updated one in this catagory for about the same price.......about $1,200 after rebates. :P |

Nancyc, I have been looking for cheap laptops too, mostly on ebay and none seem to ever go for less than $100. The screens are usually worth more than anything else and you don't want to get one with a bad screen. Look for one on ebay that is in the wrong catagory, like hard drives or something and bid on it at the last second. there are probably 10 others doing the same thing but you may get lucky, most of the cheap ones have very small or no harddrives so you will want to stay away from them.
