That's right. Do you think i'm too old (34) ? Well...I'm going anyways ! I've been out of college since July of last year and I'm ready (I think) to do it again. I spent 2 years and 7 months @ IU majoring in computer science.(with an impressive GPA) ... now I'm going to go to ITT for networking. My second meeting with them is Wednesday, that's when we'll fill out all the paperwork.
I sure hope I can do this again. Last time was pretty hard to do (good) and try to manage the CH too !

I'm in the same position (at 42). After being a programmer (20 yrs) and IT contractor (for the last 12 yrs), I thought it would be time to upgrade with the current IT job market in the shape it is (read: ~~unemployed~~ unemployable). Apparently 15 yrs as a database analyst isn't worth anything anymore, unless there is a "brand-new" certification to go with it. (I'm also finding out that a cert. on its own isn't worth a lot these days either. --- flooded market)

I'm just hoping the job market recovers a little by the time I'm done my courses and certain sectors/areas (datawarehousing, internet/network security, e-commerce) remain relatively unflooded.

I think that is AWESOME!!! I too would like to go to college, BUT, with 2 kids, and my undecisiveness on an occupation prevents me from doing so. SO, I have made the decision to use the money to make sure both my kids go to college, and I will be the best mother I can to them, which can be the most difficult job in the world! LOL

Congradulations! I will pray that you do well in school. I am going back to school also for computer programming/systems analyst. I have 12 years experience and it seems since I have been on disability for almost 4 years that no one wants to hire me now because my skills are not current. So I am going back to college to take refresher courses and some classes like Java, Access, Visual Basic to make me competative in the job market. I am hoping to be working again within the next two years. I am 37 years old. You are never to old to go back to school and learn things. You will do fine. We will just pray that the beast stays away. You will be so happy once you have your degree.

Great idea, Unsolved.....
If you enjoy doing the schoolwork, then it's not that difficult to fit it into your life. The most difficult part for me is fitting classes, homework and papers around the CH. Fortunately I have professors who understand that I need to leave class from time to time because of a CH. During exams I keep my options open - profs know I won't cheat or abuse my rights, so they let me leave to do the oxygen thing if I need to. I have not, however, asked for extra time to complete homework or papers.

Congrats on going back to school! No, you aren't too old either - my dad finished an electronics program at a tech school when he was 51, and did great. I'm also going to grad school with a woman (she's about 50) who's about to finish her MA in Brit. Lit. which was a complete change from her past career on Wall Street, and she's an honor student - go figure!

My mama always said, "When you green - you're growing --- when you're RIPE - you start to ROT!"

She was 83 when she died and was STILL learning. Went back for refresher courses every year to keep up her certification and NO, you're NEVER too old to go back to school or to LEARN something new.

Good luck with your studies. I know you'll do well - you've got the right attitude and you're a bright KID!

I wish you luck Unsolved!
My mom (my hero) went back to college at age 42. She was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly afterword, but even through surgery and chemotherapy she stayed in school, and pulled a 4.0! She became an RN. It's never too late!

Hey Unsolved,

I teach for 2 universities in Minnesota. Just summer and night classes. I'd say about 1/2 the students are usually in their 30s and 40s. I'll bet you'll find folks like you.

And, the best thing...those folks usually care about learning and are fun to work with.
