Title: Nicotine......Poll......
Post by andy on Oct 15th, 2003, 7:11pm
http://science.howstuffworks.com/nicotine.htm

Do you smoke or chew tobacco?
Did your parents smoke?
How much do you smoke?
Have you ever had a CH while on the patch or gum?
Have you ever tried nicotine as an abortive for CH?

Smoking
Nicotine is a potent vasoconstrictor, so here's one more reason not to smoke. When a cigarette is smoked, nicotine enters the blood immediately, and vasoconstriction occurs systemically. The more nicotine and the more frequently one smokes, the greater the vasoconstriction. Smokers usually have chronically elevated blood nicotine levels and increased vascular resistance.

Just curious, andy

I smoke, My Dad smoked and quit, I have no kids, Never tried the patch.

I reach for a cigarette as soon as i wake up, i smoke as soon as i finish my shower, I smoke while i am fixing breakfast, i smoke after i eat breakfast, i smoke everywhere i can. BUT............

I cannot smoke while being attacked by CH, I've tried but i am too preoccupied with squeezing my brains or pulling my hair. I also find that cigarettes taste bad while i am being attacked. As soon as the CH has subsided....Yup, I reach for a smoke!! LMAO!

Hi there!  :)

I have never smoked, but my dad smoked a lot (until I forced him to give it up) and my mum was 3-a-year - type of smoker, but she has given up smoking all together. Both quit years before I got my first ch attack...

Best wishes & PF days,

Mark..how old are you?? .35 cents a pack??

I don't smoke..I did though for 16 yrs..quit Jan 5, 2003..haven't smoked since.   ;D

Parents did not smoke
Smoked 1 pack a day
Wasn't in cycle when I quit..that was the only time I used the patch.
Never tried nicotine as an abortive.

Badfly..try the patch! It worked to lessen the withdrawal for me. Otherwise I would have been crazy! When you think about having a smoke, remember to tell yourself that you are not going to do it because you don't want to have to go thru this again! You've made it 7 days! Don't give up now! It will get easier! After two weeks it will only be a mind thing, most of the physical cravings will be gone. After a month, you'll forget you ever smoked! Really, if I could do it (it was tough) anyone can do it. I didn't really want to quit, it was pretty much my only bad habit I hadn't given up too. But I knew I had to quit. I also knew it would NEVER be easy. Never. So, just finally said it's time, and did it! Thank God for getting me thru!
Good luck..didn't mean to ramble..I just want to try to encourage anyone who wants to quit.

I smoke a couple packs a day...No desire to quit.
My parents NEVER smoked & I just lost my father  :( to liver & lung cancer....he never drank either.  Go figure.

Never tried the patch or gum...think thats nonsense...If ya want to quit, just quit.
Don't think smoking affects my head one way or the other..

Do you smoke or chew tobacco?
- yes

Did your parents smoke?
- Father smoked until 1st child arrived - Mother never smoked.

How much do you smoke?
- used to smoke more than a pack a day --- switched to rollies when gov't taxes doubled the cost 1 1/2 yrs ago (now $10/pack or $15/pouch!!!)

Have you ever had a CH while on the patch or gum?
- never been on patch or gum

Have you ever tried nicotine as an abortive for CH?
- never had the urge to smoke during a CH - smoking after a CH is definitely not an option for me --- CRANKS IT RIGHT BACK UP!!!

I smoked up to 1-1/2 packs a day but quit exactly 10 months and 1 day ago.  I used Wellbutrin (zyban).  I think it worked ok.

My mom smokes.  She's 80 years old.  Doesn't seem to have effect her (yet).

I havent had a full blown attack since 04/02.  However, I do shadow sometimes for weeks at a time and then it goes it away completely.  Same now as when I smoked.

I started smoking when packs were 35 cents and Lori - I ain't that old!

Wishing you all PFDAN always, Linda T

My mother smoked while pregnanat with me and stopped when I was 1.
Never tried CH for stopping a CH - di dnot start CH's until this summer. But I did use them to stop Nicotine HA when I did not have one for a few hours and new that I was jonesing.

Do you smoke or chew tobacco?  Yes, smoke occasionally.

Did your parents smoke? No, never have.

How much do you smoke? A pack lasts a few days.

Have you ever had a CH while on the patch or gum? No, but I've never tried the patch.

Have you ever tried nicotine as an abortive for CH? Yes, and I havent found it to work.

Beyond that, I was getting cluster headaches long before I ever started smoking and at that point, the CH pain was diagnosed as a histamine-headache caused by an allergic reaction (basic hay/pollen reaction). This was probably an incoorect diagnosis as when I moved to another place, my allergy problem stopped but I still had the episodic headaches on a reoccurring (yearly) basis. I am willing to concede that its possible that the allergy aggrevated or triggered the clusters - but I'm still wondering if it was just a coincidence.

Smoking doesnt appear to trigger the cycle or abort an attack. Furthermore, not smoking doesnt seem to affect the cycle at all. But I do think that it can aggrevate the situation if you are smoking and taking vasoconstrictor drugs. I notice tightness in my chest if smoking and using Imitrex during a cycle so I try not to do either.

Thanks everyone for your replies. But i guess what i am getting at is, ive tried to quit using the patch, the gum, and the lozenges. Nothing worked. Im still smoking 2-3 packs a day. The gum and lozenges made me feel weird, and lightheaded, maybe from too much nicotine...

I would try to abort an attack by chewing a couple of pieces of gum at the same time, but im not in cycle now, so i cant experiment on myself.
Anybody want to try it to see what happens? Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor just like caffeine....so....are there any guinea pigs out there who would do this for research sake?  Be careful not to Overdose though.
Thanks, andy

No. No gum.

Not in a position to be guinea pig for ya.
Hope you find someone who can,
sounds like a promising theory.

Not trying to quit either & not planning
to any time soon (smoking).

Good luck to you, hope you can
"kick the habit", if that is what
you wish to do.

ok, sorry for my previous answers cuz I'm without cigs and it SUKS!!

I normally smoke 2 to 3 packs a day... Over the last two days I have had approximately 8 cigarettes.

:o :'( >:( :-/ :'(

No, I'm not trying to quit... I got no smokes!!  My hubby and I have been sharing a pack...He also normally smokes 2 to 3 packs a day.... But, obviously, I could probably quit since I have not yet killed anyone or damaged anything!  LOL!

I have been known to smoke at the beginning of a CH attack specifically to make it peak more quickly.  It does not abort the attack, but kind of brings it to a head more quickly than if I let it run it's own course.

Cig's have never brought on an attack (like alcohol will)
and I had CH long before I began smoking.

My mother smoked and died of cancer at age 69.  My father still smokes (3 to 4 packs a day) and will be 81 this year (he does however have chronic bronchitis)

My daughter does not smoke and never will.

(I think though, that my dog may be sneaking my cigarettes and beer... >:(... I have yet to catch her though!)

Sherry (who is trying very hard to make one cigarette last all day)

I have used the nicotine patch with excellent results!

I just peeled off the wrapper and put it over my mouth. :-X

Smoke: 1 pack a day (Allways outside)
Parents smoke: yep
Patch or gum question: nope
abortive : Nope, I view it more as a crutch when in cycle. Never made them any better or worse during a HA.

Seeya,

Patchmouth Jimbo
