Title: What makes your ch worse during an attack?
Post by nancyc on Oct 15th, 2003, 1:21pm
I know alot of folks have no problem with lights but they aggrevate me when i am getting hit. I have dim lights in my bathroom since that is the first place i run to.
Noise bothers me because i like to be alone
I can not stand for anyone to touch me or move around me when I am getting hit.
Crying makes my chs worse.
Having someone ask me what can I do to make it better? I just want them to get the hell away from me and leave me alone.
I think alot of the things that make my chs worse during an attack are because I am so used to isolating during an attack...

I can relate to the isolation subject, but only because i've been alone for so long. Noise or having to answer questions probably annoys me the worst. I truly don't think anything actually makes it worse. Like most, i isolate myself and i pace, squeeze, pull my hair, pound my temple....bla, bla, bla.

First I want to say that I could have written Nancy's post.  That aside the only other thing I can think of that makes my ch worse is heat and barometric changes in the weather.

Any people around - they make too much noise.  I find that listening to Fleetwood Mac helps - I don't know why.  Light or any noise.  I like to have a fan blowing on me when I am having a ch.

when I get an attack, I also like to be alone, so I seek places where no one will see me or bother me.

I also like to feel cool, and I know if I am in a hot enviroment it makes me feel worse.

Each thing you said.  Light I can't take, noise i cannot hear and do not under any circumstance try touching me.  Stuey

While a number of people here say that they enjoy a smoke after a CH, that cranks it right back up for me.  (been a long time since i've done that).  Just to be on the safe side, I won't have another smoke until the next morning.  Pretty tough sometimes.

Light, sound, movement!!

Fortunately, most of my attacks come in the early evening and so creating darkness in the house is relatively easy.

Best thing I can do: sit in neutral posture; relax all muscles as much as possible; and try to get into a meditative mind place, i.e., drift into a much absence of active thought as possible.

For me.. the biggest thing that makes it worse is heat..it seems 10x worse when I am sweating from the headache & it is hot.....

I am finding that most of us have simularities of what makes the ch worse. I attempt to avoid all the things that act as triggers, this kind of puts a damper on the quality of life, since if those that are triggers are also envolved in the "making it worse" then thats what I need to avoid.
If you can find me while having an attack I would be pacing, praying,in a quite place, low odors attempting to block the world out. Maybe that is why we build a cage around ourself. Their seems to be alot of unknown reasons that things"make it worse" or act as "triggers" .
I am so glad that we have affiliates that are attempting to do research in the area of cluster headaches, we need to find a cure and work together in order to do this.Speaking of work , we all got alot to do...Surf

Ice sends me into a full Kip10.  Light and noise don't work either.  I try to be still so a lot of movement around me isn't good.

Cool temperatures are a plus.  Most of you like to be alone.  I like Jackie right beside me.  Her voice keeps me calm and I like her to touch me but not on the head or neck.  I feel stronger when she is with me.  There is one guy at work that I don't mind having around but I don't want him to touch me ;D

Nothing increases the pain but stuff can make them harder to deal with.

I'm very close to Nancy on this. I want dark, dead silence, a cool place, don't touch me, don't talk or ask me anything. Go away or I will kill you.

Smoking and/or being hot during an attack...

Light doesn't bother me, sound doesn't bother me.  People do not even aggrivate an attack although isolation is preferred...

The problem is...often I REALLY crave a cig while getting hit mid range on the Kip.  After I light one up, the attack increases, and I realize that I am a dumbass.

Oh well...

Wow, you guys are strange! LOL!  Just kidding.

I am textbook CH.  Noise, no problem.  Light, no problem.  Being around others, no problem.  Only thing that makes my CH worse, i.e. the pain gets worse is:
1) smoking a cigarette once it is underway (but I do this because I have found that it "hurries" the CH along to its peak and therefore is gone more quickly)
2) smoking "other stuff" same as number one
3) getting onion fumes during high kip shadows (say a kip 4 or 5) But this does not "help it along" like smoking in fact I found it heightens AND prolongs the attack!!

I feel a bit stressed when people ask questions when I am in so much pain that I cannot physically answer them, but, it doesn't make the pain worse.

I really feel that there is a lot more grey here than black and white.  Seems to me that many here have a lot more migranous symptoms mixed in with the CH symptoms than many here would like to admit.

In fact, if we were to be EXTREMELY RIGID in our criteria, there would be VERY few here that could claim true CH.

Just something to ruminate on...

Sherry

ch attacks are for me like being "temporarily" allergic to everyone and everything.  I despise being seen or observed while dancing my hellish jig.  Noise and people do aggravate when the bell tolls.

for me "optimum" cluster situation i can be in for a cluster attack is

1.  by myself
2.  near the bathroom/tub/shower
3.  a coffee pot full of hot strong coffee

WORST SCENARIO:

1.  Being at work in a corporate environment with happy smiley people and ringing telephones ............. :o (i really hate those times)......
2.  Being with friends in a bar with loud music and everyone is having a ball..........(kill me NOW ::))
3.  Driving in traffic :o :o :o

When he gets hit I live in darkness and silence and if I don't go check on him every once in a while he thinks I don't care but then If I ask any questions he hardly knows I am there....*sigh*.....I could only hope that there will be a solution some day.....Chia   :-/

Sherry, have a really hard time thinking what i feel is migarines..even though i know they are hell ..not trying to make their pain seem less than mine..After all, we are cousins....but these are the things i deal with when hit with chs...have had them for over 28 years..wish i did not.....are they personal? are they symptomatic? who the hell knows..all i know is leave me the fuck alone when i am getting hit...i want to be alone.....i hate life when i am in pain...i thrive when i am NOT.... :D

Title: Re: What makes your ch worse during an attack?
Post by oringkid on Oct 15th, 2003, 7:14pm
oh, Nancy, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they are migraines at all... just saying that there is more of a lap-over of symptoms than some would like to admit.

IE the Noise, light, etc type thing.  We WANT them to be completely different, but there ARE symptoms for many that are similar or the same.

Well Andy, the "textbook" case has changed ALOT over the years... I bet some of the oldtimers could tell you though...

My only problem with being a TRUE textbook case was that I am FEMALE and the original textbook cases were male.

Course ya know, the Biggest sign of NOT having CH is if you are defensive about having it!! LOL!  Just kidding!

Nancy,

My answer to your question of "what makes it worse" is:

Giving up and falling into the darkness of "Why me"

Like everyone else, I have whole list of what helps me. I tend to take Jonny's approach and fight the bastard full blast - balls out and head on. A weak mental attitude going into the fight simply makes it worse.

But what do I know, I'm just a newbie.........

Agree 100% all 3 of the above. But I can add one more hellish scenario...

4. Middle of the night kip 10, both kids sick, wailing at the top of their lungs (been there a couple of times)

Light in general does not bother me, but I prefer a cool room, I prefer all cold in general. If the room is lit it seems to me like the light will "heat" my face even more, yet I don't mind being outdoors while getting hit.

Noise, if is my own noise I have no problem (loud heavy metal to drown the *noise* of the pain) If it is people laughing, phones ringing, kids crying, etc I really can't stand it. But then again, while not in cycle I'm the same way some days...

Only time the light ever bothered me was while lying in the ER with BRIGHT lights that seemed like they are a foot in front of my face.

And why can't they understand that while getting hit, most of us don't want to lay down.

ER Nurse: "If you get out of bed one more time, I'm going to send you home."

MY REPLY: "If you tell me that one more time, you're gonna need this bed more than me!"

My eyes are sensitive to light CH or not, so during a hit, it’s just one more thing to piss me off….

Smoking during an attack sharpens the pain somewhat… but I have to have one anyway, simply for the “comfort”….

My dad calling me every couple hours to check on me…. God bless him for worrying about me, but damnit... I'll call YOU

Definetly noise and light make things worsen very quickly. Having someone walking around doesn't help at all, the sound of those steps is unbearable. I have had to tell my wife to leave me alone: please don't ask me questions at all, don't make me talk. Poor of her, I believe that she is not understanding completely what CH are all about, but she suffers seeing me that bad, even more than myself.

Noise doesn't seem to bother me unless its really high pitched, but, Light is a killer in almost any form, found myself cursing the blinking VCR clock at 3 and 4 am quite a few times. As the others have stated pretty much anyone being within earshot or reach is aggravating too.......

Light also bother me.  Heat kills me, I try to sit in front of an AC with it on full blast or I will sit in the car with the AC on and the raido on with my face right up to the AC vents so that the air is blowing in my face.  It actually works.  I also cannot stand anyone around while I am getting hit and my husband and kids understand that.  When I am getting hit they leave me alone, they don't even look at me.
