Cat

Nevermind, read the last line hehe.
Wyndham hotel at the airport.

Personally I'd rather be away from the main throng of people, don't really wanna deal with alot of people in the heat of july while getting hit  :-/

Title: Re: Has anyone heard yet.....
Post by BarbaraD on Oct 15th, 2003, 8:52am
Elaine, Buddy is right - The Stockyard is great - and it has the Bullpen right below it - (the BAR for those of you who haven't figured that one out)  - It's NEAT and downtown and AIR CONDITIONED. Got some great memories of that place...... But that's another story for my grandkids....

There's a MONTH of things to do and see in Nashville even in July. There are hotels downtown that can accomodate us and there are hotels out of downtown that are reaonable that can accomodate us.

We might want to put the convention off till fall and give ourselves a little more time to plan. We could talk to a couple of drug companies and see if they wanted to help and maybe put a booth up to advertise their wares or something. This could help defray costs somewhat.

Back yards are nice, but I still opt for Nashville.

I still like the idea of having a convention right after election so that we can have an Inaugural Dinner/Dance where we would also honor people who have worked for OUCH during the year, as well as pass the paperwork and torch to the new Officers and BoD members.  This would be the time that the newly elected would have a workshop with the outgoing people.

Tennessee in early November.....no heat....no humidity.

Oh, let it be

I would say Downtown would be sensible as people can walk and wander around the town and go into the bars and listen to live music.
There is an array of different kinds of pubs and resteraunts and live music venues downtown.
And I do know that Deej would love to be here in Nashville as he loves country music.

If it were in the mountains of TN I'd be all over it.  I just can't see myself in a city in a hotel in the middle of cycle.

Just wouldn't do anything for me.  I'm just one person though.  I highly doubt I'd even try to attend if it were in that setting, the way I deal with the beast would not be condusive to that kind of setting.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Post by Roxy on Oct 15th, 2003, 10:24am
I’m with Cat on this one.  Last year was the first year the convention was held away from the sterile hotel atmosphere, and it worked out great.  Even the speakers loved the atmosphere.  I don’t know about the ones who didn’t attend last year, but of those of us who were there, no one wanted to go wander, sightsee or do other activities…..we just wanted to sit around with each other and talk and get to know one another, so it never mattered what bars or places were close.  We had our own personal bar, and it was so much nicer than spending money out someplace.  We also made our own music.  So having the convention at a place where you aren’t stuck in a hospitality room that shuts down at 11 pm is essential.  Also, having it at a hotel that will let you keep that much 02 close to the room is also essential.  Many hotels do NOT like the idea of that much 02 on the grounds.

The places in Colorado are beautiful, secluded and do not care how loud we are, or how long we are up around the campfires or lake.  With me, Cat, Mast, and Elaine, there is plenty of help to spread the work around.  Having it a little further west is also fair to those who couldn’t travel the distance to the east last year.

It takes all year for many of the people on the board to save the money to attend the convention.  Having it again this November sounds wonderful, but I think it should be held in August.  This gives people plenty of time to schedule work and finances.  August in Colorado won’t bother anyone’s head, even if we spent the whole time outside on the porch or by the lake.

Having the convention at a resort where you are just five steps from the medicine room (02 and trex) is a really nice thought for those of us who are chronic.  When you are sitting outside visiting with other ch’ers, and you can quickly take a few steps to a room set up for ch’s…..well, that makes it nice for some of us.

I vote Colorado, it’s time for one a little further to the west.

I"m with you Cat!

From the stories that I have heard about this last convention, it has been my impression that everyone LOVED the setting (the outdoor environment with the porch to hang out on) and preferred it over a hotel setting.

I've heard from several people who went that they didn't care about what there was to do in the surrounding area because everyone just hung out together on that porch and got rowdy & talked & talked & talked until the wee hours of the night.

That's why the Colorado location is perfect for that same type of setting.

Again I ask....what happened to the idea of having this thing in DIFFERENT parts of the country so that it is convenient to those who it wasn't convenient to the year before??  There are people on the west coast who get clusters too!  ;D

There are clusterheads EVERYWHERE!  ;)

While I don't know if I'll be any better financial shape this summer, but even if I did have the money last year, the travel-time would have probably have ruled it out.

Spread it around!  It only seems fair.

Post by Melissa on Oct 15th, 2003, 11:20am
As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't matter if it's held in the mountains or in the city.  The point of the convention is to MEET other Clusterheads, educate ourselves on what is and what is going to be done to help us and also recognize those who have worked hard throughout the year to make OUCH what it is!  The meeting place should be as close to a major airport as possible (for those out of the USA folks, plus cheaper air rates), and somewhat professional out of courtesy for our guest speakers.

I commend and thank those that are willing to take on the big task of hosting a convention.  It's hard work and you can never please all of the people all of the time.

Ditto, Cornflake!  Once again, I ask..has the vote been taken with OUCH on where the convention will be...think all of us have different reasons for wanting it held near us...but one thing i can say for sure is that even when we were in hot Atlanta, the support was fantastic for those being hit..you could go to your room if you got hit and there were those that came and helped out if you needed them to...I , for one, HAVE to be ALONE when i am getting hit...I dont want anyone around me...so anywhere we have the convention, will work for me...I just pray we can come to a decision soon and everyone will be in agreement....love you guys,  ;Dnancyc  Ps I do vote for Nashville ofcourse, since i am Southern LOL

Great news, we have quite alot of time till Summer or Fall 2004 to decide on a location.  One thing is for sure, AC is everywhere (inside), however whether it be held in Las Vegas or Nashville it will still be HOT outside.  The advantage to Las Vegas is , "it's a dry heat".  It's still hot, not going to kid anyone.  As for the time of year, sure we have to notify employers and coordinate with our families, etc, but what about the circadian clock?  My CH, over the past 24 years, have ALWAYS been in the Fall.   Most of us episodic sufferers get CH in the Fall or Spring, right?  Something to consider in terms of not only weather, but timing of the seasons.  Back to location, what is the purpose of the get together, to sight-see together or get down to some nitty gritty support for our common problem?  I, personally, love entertainment and culture, however I think a natural setting would be peaceful and alot more laid back without distractions so that we can focus on some hardcore issues.  I'm switching my original proposed city of Las Vegas to the green beautiful mountains of COlorado.

Why don't we search the internet for the best accomodations, keeping in mind the major airport and conference accomodations that Mel mentioned and check them out.  Post them for us all to look over.

Who offered to sponsor the conference in Colorado?  What city are we looking near?

After we've seen a few choices, we can start a thread and just say one word each....Colorado or Tennessee, and tally up the votes.

We do need to work this out pretty soon.

No one liked the idea of having it right after election next year?

Post by catlind on Oct 15th, 2003, 2:13pm
Location really is only a small part of it.  From my experience hosting the last convention, the key points are to make it the most comfortable atmosphere for clusterbuds to sit around and talk and have a professional atmosphere for the speaking engagements.

Since the speaking engagements will be handled by OUCH all that the host will have to do is make sure there is a meeting room that can handle up to 100 people and appropriate accomodations for the speakers.

You have to be able to get O2 in a central location for everyone, and you want to be able to have a meeting place of sorts that is casual for folks to sit around, play guitars, drink their drink of choice, and talk and have fun.

Shuttles can be arranged almost anywhere, usually at an extra expense.  No one used a shuttle except the speakers in upstate, everyone wanted to rent a car and share the drive.

On a personal level, I prefer an atmosphere away from masses of people.  I am not comfortable in a setting of large masses while in cycle.  Many others that were at this years convention said the same thing.

The Board of Directors has been working on the basis of spreading the locations around the country so there is an equal opportunity for people to attend from all regions.

When the board votes they will consider proximity to airports, amenities, and location by geography.  They also will consider what is in the area should anyone wish it to be an extended vacation.

No matter where it is, it is an experience no one can forget. :)

Pros and cons!
I went to the last three conventions so figure I can give a few pros and cons!

One in a hotel smoking is limited to certain places and most of us smoke. Also drinking you are fairly bound to having to buy at the bar at high prices. At the resort we were on a porch drinking beer and Liqior we brought and smoking. It was outside rain or shine and being outside the non smokers enjoyed it.

Oxygen and Imitrex was in the main room from the porch so getting help fast when hit was great! But it is not very private for people who want to hurt alone, where at a montel you can get to your room and be alone.

The last convention was a hour from the airport. That means people will have to either do like we did and have a friend pick us up, or you have to rent a car. I did not have a car had to depend on others to go to breakfest and stuff. Where in a hotel in town there is usually stores and places to eat all around. Most have shuddles to and from the airport.

I found pros and cons at all the conventions so neither are perfect.

If you are thinking of TN and want cabins I found this! I called them and they have a 9 bedroom cabin that houses 25 people and 1, 2, 3, and 4 bedroom cabins. I was qoated $3226 for four days in the 9 bedroom that would run about $129 each for the whole week end.  But its a hour away from Noxville airport No shuttle. I have been here and its really nice. Leesa check this out!
http://www.adventuregroupcabinrentals.com/packages/reunions.htm

I have found that no matter where us clusterheads and supporters geather we have a good time and everyone is taken care of! Not everyone is the out door type person. It depends on who is going and what people want . Like Mel said there is no way to make everyone happy!

Nashville a general location and it does have lots to offer.

Alright folks here is the deal with Nashville. I posted my "request" on the OUCH board just to get my hat in to the ring so to speak. The offical request if yall rem. Don posted a link a while back to post request for convention to be placed there and any info on that link. Thats what I did. Im not sure where in the devil that request went to but I know someone got it. ALL info about Nashville sights, attractions, hotels, vacation spots, airports, and shuttles and even for the shoppers a link for the out malls, along with link for these things were put on that link that Don posted here on da board so all could add their request on where conveniton would be held!
Leesa, with the help of Dave who WILL host the convention if its held here in NAHSVILLE!!!!!

PS, Hey Prez by chance do you have the info from that link for all of family to see??????

Title: Re: Has anyone heard yet.....
Post by catlind on Oct 15th, 2003, 3:39pm
Leesa, all the info is on the OUCH Board of Directors board under Convention 2004.  It lists all the proposals, old and new, and there are 2 fromyou so that's where I missed the info.  The first one on the list from Dave doesn't have any info, the second one has all that info :)

Whoever gets the job of hosting is not bound to anything they submit.  As long as it's still within your area (i.e. Tennessee or whatever other state is picked).

The important thing is folks getting together, and learning what's new in the ch world.  The atmosphere will determine what folks come.  No matter where it's held there will be people there.  From experience, I guarandamtee you will have some folks unhappy and some very happy.  Do not do anything based on one or two people and what they want, it will come back to bite you on the ass, it did with me.

Whoever gets the convention, pick your place, your time, and tell everyone that's where and when it is.  If they come they come, if they don't they don't.

You will have lots of people telling you what they want, me included.  Whoever gets it has to do what they can do.

Build it and they will come ;)

Cool ideas but if you like heat, go to LA in September. Don't know about October. For me, if you go to California, SF area is more fun.  Might even go and I'd love an excuse.

Pretty hard for me to fly anywhere from here because we only have puddle jumper airlines that charge hundreds of dollars  to get to a major airport one way....bastards. Tons cheaper to fly to any major from Buffalo.......There's an idea: Buffalo in January :D  Best chicken wings the world though....if you like them. I don't.

Anyway, these things are hard on the bank accounts.. >:
Too bad we have such shitty rail service. It was fun to go to Chicago by train. Not crazy about Nashville but it does have an international airport. Nashville isn't like New York. Last time I was there, downtown wasn't a difficult place to deal with.

You know, they used to call Chicago the convention city. Lots of stuff around there. Of course that was when not so many lived in the west.

Just yakking.

There is an international airport nearby.  It only takes 3 connecting-flights to get here from Minneapolis.  The nice brisk walk across the tarmac is one of the highlights since if it isn't snowing, you can actually see "Nowhere".

Shuttle-trips are available by snowmobile or dog-sled.

Plenty of affordable accomodations including cabins, fishing-shacks, and for the budget-minded there is a wide selection of igloos.

January has a seasonal high of a balmy -42, so winter clothing is optional.

The area features lots of enjoyable activities including snowmobiling, snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing.  (If we can hire a local native, we can even go moose hunting out-of-season.)

Water-sports are also plentiful including ice-fishing and swimming with the local polar-bear club.

Indoor attractions include hockey games (and not much else).

Okay...    So who's in?

Alright folks I have some info about the link Elaine posted today.
From what I can see this place is AWSOME!! It has a 9 bedroom place sleeps 24 people total, see through fire place, table big nuff to be a river bardge for all of us to eat at along with other stuff like a FULL kitchen with all the goodies we need for those who feel like cookin!!  ;D
Cost: 3226.25  devide that by 25 people and ya get this 134.00 (rounded up) Now this place offers 1 bedroom 1 king size bed,  and a queen sleeper sofa  (sleeps 4)for 751.65 divided 4 thats 187.91. 2 bedroom sleeps 6. 1 king bed, 1 queen bed and queen sleeper sofa for 163.60 per person (i forgot the total price on this one)
4 bedroom it sleeps 12, 1 king bed, 3 queen beds and a queen sleeper sofa 1310.10 devided by 12 is 109.17.
This place also offers meals catered in, the owner of this place the son is a cheif and they will do their dead level best for us if we choose to have it here!! Now if we can only get the board to vote on this ASAP so who ever hosts this shin dig can get some things going here. HINT HINT!!! The earlier reserved will guarentee that we get what we need and want outta this!!
But check it out, looks cool to me and Scott the guy I talked to said if anyone close by wanted to come up and see this place first hand the first Friday in Dec. we could!! Hey E, can we say road trip lady  ;)

If I can go, I need one tiny room for one person. It's the only way I can get any real sleep. What a PITA I am.

Nice work kids.

Leesa, that place looks wonderful, thanks for calling and checking it out.  That sounds much better than a downtown hotel.

I know Wisconsin (where Elizabeth put in a proposal) has a lot of sites like that.  The atmosphere of the place makes all the difference.  I don't think anyone who went to the convention this year would argue......

THE PORCH WAS AWSOME!!!!!!

....and so was the musical accompaniment.

Leesa I am going to Nashville weather the convention is there or not I have a date with Buddy to go there.
They are talking about where the convention will be right now on the OUCH board. We should know soon.
Like I said I don't care where it is just as long as they pick a place soon so my family and I can make some arrangements. I am sure where ever they pick will be a great place, and we will all enjoy and be able to go.

Donna we plan on driving so you can hitch a ride with us :-)!

More info on holding convention in Nashville for ya....... Jayne whom lives in Nashville is going to "case" some of the hotels in the area and see what they have and get some rates etc. So we will see which way this thing goes. Either down town Nashville or the resort near Knoxville. Now all we have to do is wait on the OUCH crew to cast the deciding vote on where its being held.

Leesa,
Remember the neuro I told you about in Nashville that treated Will 2 years ago? His dad is a clusterhead, too. Never in my life have I had a doc talk to me on the phone -long distance too- about CH for an hour. He had a lot of insight as both doc and son. All I can say is what he did for Will worked and he's been PF for 2 years now. Ah jeez-- I think I just jinxed us.
>:(
Been meaning to call ya, but it's hard to get time with ole binky boy  keeping me busy--he's growing like a weed. LOL Plus, I am so sleep deprived I can't remember how to drive the 2 miles from my house to yours. LMAO How's that for a friggin excuse. And Buddy the dog ate your phone # too. LOL ;D
