Title: what's the odds?? Post by dougW on Aug 23rd, 2007, 12:18am From the latest issue of Cephalalgia )abstract only) Volume 27 Issue 9 Page 1014-1019, September 2007 Prevalence of cluster headache in a population-based sample in Germany Z Katsarava, M Obermann , M-S Yoon , P Dommes , J Kuznetsova , C Weimar & HC Diener Department of Neurology, University Hospital Essen, Essen, Germany A population-based sample of 6000 inhabitants of the city of Essen in Germany was screened using a standard questionnaire for possible cluster headache (CH). Fifty-six percent responded (N = 3336, 50.5% of them women, mean age 44.7 ± 12.7 years). All suspected cases (N = 182) were interviewed by a neurologist. Four subjects with CH (three men) were identified. The 1-year prevalence of CH was estimated to be 119/100 000 (95% confidence interval 3, 238/100 000). Hmmm. 6000 surveys, 3336 respondents. Can we assume the other 49.5% don't have headaches at all? And off the suspected cases (182) only 4 confirmed cases of CH. The numbers seem "suspect". ;-) Doug |

Title: Re: what's the odds?? Post by UN solved on Aug 23rd, 2007, 6:38am It doesn't sound that far off does it ? That's less than 1 in 1,000 people with 3 out of 4 being male. Although, there's no way to be totally sure, I would think that those who didn't respond, weren't interested in the survey and probably had no problems with headaches. It does kind of sound like 'useless information' though. PF Wishes UNsolved |
