Hello all,

Spoke to the Hospital today to confirm my neuro appointment and they mentioned a note on the computer about booking me in for a 24hour heart scan? I cant remember the name of it (Cardio-gram?) i cant remember anyway, what has this got to do with my cluster headaches? They have got alot worse now than they were but is there any need for a heart monitor?

Help! I am petrified!

I remember getting a ElectroCardiogram but because they wanted to be sure my heart will not go crazy with the meds, some of them may affect your heart rate.

I have an arrhythmia so sometimes the heart beat goes wacky and I need to check the amount of meds I get and what I can take or not.

I don't think you have to worry about it, ask the Doctor why you need one. You have to be proactive about your health. There are not stupid questions but the ones never asked.

They had my neighbor wear one for about 3 days to check his heart function. It was no big deal, just a strap he wore around his chest that recorded everything into a box that the doc read later to see what his heart was doing.

Like Rosy said, I'm sure they're just confirming your heart can handle whatever they ultimately prescribe for you but do ask the doctor his reasoning. Knowledge never hurts, good luck with the neuro!

I don't have the link anymore but there is strong evidence that some with CH have a hole in their heart that allows unoxygenated blood to flow the wrong way, this loweres the amount of O2 in the blood that reaches the brain. As we know the brain responds by expanding the arteries and vessels in the brain, which is bad for us. The same applies with people with sleep apnea. Your Dr may be looking into this.

It's probably either to check for the hole thing or to see where your heart stands in terms of how much medicine you can tolerate because a lot of CH drugs can be rough on your heart. I've never done the 24 hour monitoring thing but I've had so many EKGs, sometimes daily, that I've lost track!!!

I had the heart monitor thing twice in the past 10 years. I was complaining about rapid heart beat. This monitored me for 24 hours, and it was suggested that Verapamil may be the culprit. They took away the Verapamil and got rid of the rapid heartbeat. They replaced it with Lithium and I was fine. The second time it was just as a precaution to be sure everything was ok. It's no big deal. It's a precaution and better safe than sorry. Absolutely nothing to worry about.
