Title: Yet another question cencerning symptoms...
Post by CudaPrime on Jul 12th, 2007, 9:37pm
For years, ever since I can remember and I'm 40 now, I have had a recurring pain behind my right eye. It usually would manifest around the same time every year (right around summer) and would last for a few days, then poof, gone.

The pain is hard to explain in words, kind of like someone is jabbing an ice-pick into my ocular nerve or right temple. It only lasts a few seconds, but while it's happening I can't do much of anything but ride it out. I can speak but not carry on a conversation. It will happen a few times a day for a few days at most, then it's gone for another year or two. Usually about the time I forget about it completely... WHAM! I always thought they were some form of migraine, and due to the the fact that I don't get normal headaches I hear people talk about I simply put up with it as the price I have to pay to avoid other kinds of headaches. Que' sera, sera.

Now, this morning I have a similar feeling, but this time it is toward the back of my head on the opposite side, it feels remarkably like a REALLY BAD muscle pull spasm or something. It seems to be on a line directly behind my left eye, but it's on, or directly underneath the back of my head instead of my temple or eye this time. I've tried to determine if that's what it is (some kind of muscle strain) by moving my head this way and that, but nothing seems to trigger the pain, except when I'm not trying to trigger it, then... WHAM!

It's been happening all day, anywhere from every 5 minutes to respites of up to an hour. The Doctor I saw mentioned Cluster Headaches, so, here I am. He prescribed me Motrin, 600mg, of which I have taken 2 so far and they don't seem to be helping at all.

It's becoming maddening as this is the longest duration of intermittent head pain I've ever experienced.

So, my question is; Does this sound Cluster to those of you that would know?

O;)

No, those are not cluster symptoms and your doctor is an idiot.

See a neuro!

Thanks for the quick reply Jonny. I had read years ago about Clusters and the symptoms described sounded quite a bit different than what I experience. I feel sympathy for all that endure them. I can only imagine what state of mind I would be in if my episodes lasted days at a time... actually, I don't want to imagine that.

Anyway, thanks again. I'm with Kaiser insurance so I'm not sure what the possibility of seeing a neuro are, but I'll ask.

Feeling like there is an ice pick in your eye for a few seconds--sounds like SUNCT--right?  Anyone?
Second part, when I was in last cluster cycle, I was getting pain on and off in the back of my head during the day (I get the CH mainly at night) that felt like some creature was jabbing a talons into the back of my head for a few seconds here and there--would only last for a few seconds--definitely not a cluster headache--but I actually think it may be it's own form of headache or head pain or whatnot.  I don't know if this is similar to what you are experiencing?  Otherwise I can't say I have any clue what that would be.

I agree with Jonny, they don't sound like clusters.  They sound more like "ice pick headaches." Take a look at the following link:

http://headaches.about.com/od/otherheadpain/a/ice_picks.htm

Like Jonny said, find a competent neurologist, put the ibuprophen up on a shelf for general aches and pains, and get an ACCURATE diagnosis.  Do some research, find a specialist in headaches and persuade your primary care physician to refer you there.

Good luck,

Ray

That's exactly what it's like! I akin it to a woodpecker jabbing it's beak through the back of my skull on an intermittent basis. Just a second or so of stabbing pain, sometimes two or three in a row, very localized, then nothing for a minute? Ten minutes? An hour, then it hits again for another round. I'm pretty convinced it's another form of migrain as the pain I describe above that I have lived with for years is text-book migrain from what I've read so far.

Thanks everyone for the replies and support! Dealing with this all day today has exhausted me. I just want to curl up in bed and pray for sleep.

O;)

Your Dr. sounds uninformed to me. Get a referral to a competent neuro and go see him. List your City and State and someone here will give you a good Neuro.

Thanks Patrick, I'm in Oakland, California. But my insurance is Kaiser so I'm pretty limited on who I can see without it costing me dramatically.

Sorry peeps I don't agree, well not unless they don't ever last longer than a few minutes.  Similar to how I started out, and I was confused as to wtf was going on.

It's the whole ice pick... then later back of the head on the same side thing that's similar and the thought that maybe I pulled something very very BAD.  My doc origionally said "cluster migraines" and prescribed high dose ibuprophen (same thing as motrin) and it did jack.  I ended up admitted in the hospital when they eventually kept coming and they were trying to stop my pain with morphine (to no avail) and I went to a new doc and began my long trek of tried and failed meds, worse and worse cycles and eventual chronicness......  and that's the shortened version of my story and I'm a stickin to it ;)

But really that is so similar sounding to mine and how my pain started.
