Title: Switching Sides???
Post by pinkeye on Apr 13th, 2007, 5:16pm
In 18-19 years of CH, I have never EVER had any tingles or anything on my left side. I am a right sider all the way. For me, the thought of it all of a sudden switching sides seems very unlikely.  I find it hard to believe honestly.   Who has ever had this happen?

I have had the odd hit on the wrong side.  It's kind of like standing bracing yourself to be punched in the right arm and someone sneaks up and punches you on the left.  I don't know if it hurt more or if I was just not ready for that, but it's not something I would care to have happen very often.

I'm sure others will be along to share their experiences as well.

After 24, 25 years of being a lefty, the beast decided to throw a curve ball, and switch sides ... But half way through, he decided he liked my left side .... AND my right side ...

So now I never know which side is going to get hit .. and a couple times, I have gotten hit on both sides at once ... Talk about fun times!

So, in answer to your question, yes, it can switch sides, or do as it did to me, go either side.

Chuck

Just goes to show how different we all are. I would actually  like it to switch.  Just to get a break on my right side.  I have applied so much pressure to the right side of my face over time, that I have physical effects. Reddish bags under my eye, even abrasions that come and go.     A picture of me while having a right sided CH was published in an article entitled " Migraine and  Related Syndromes."  Written by my doctor Paul Rizzoli. .
Thank you all for your expertise.

After all these years of being a leftie -- I now a rightie. Switched on me this year for no apparent reason. At first I thought I had "another" brain tumor, but then it finally hit me (pun intended) that the darn thing was hitting me on the right side. Weird. I'm so used to grabbing my left side that I do it without thinking and it takes a while to realize that it's not hurting...

Have a neuro appt in a couple of weeks -- he's gonna be so glad to hear this. I've been his problem child for the last 10 years anyhow. He's not going to have ANY hair left before it's over....

I'm a righty, but since 2002 I also have some on the left.  It's not a break to the right, as sometimes I also have a righty going on at a different stage.

Predominately righty here, but on rare occasion I switch sides (actually these past few days I've had that joy) ..

Do you guys find that when you get hit on the "wrong" side it seems to hurt so much worse?

I'm a lefty and have been for over 26 yrs.  I did have one hit on the right which was really bad but the next day it went back to the left and has remained there. that was over 20 yrs ago.

Mainly right-sided, but sometimes left.

Hey Chuck – me too.  Not nice at all! :o

Apparently, only about 1% of CH sufferers have experienced simultaneous hits on both sides (Source: Institute of Neurology [personal correspondence]), which bearing in mind that the latest incidence guesstimates are around 0.2% of the population, we're a pretty rare breed.

I'm too tired to do the math and I bet the incidence is higher here though :-/

Edited to say: Ok, out of interest, I've done the math, but not sure if it's correct.

In the UK there are about 60m people (give or take).  At an incidence of 0.2% this relates to about 2 in a thousand (120,000).  1% of these (both sides simultaneously) relates to just 0.02 people per thousand, which means there are about 1,200 of us in the UK.

I wonder where the other 1,199 are? :-/

I've always been a rightie, until the last cycle.  Had my usual 8 weeks on the right, cycle ended.  I had four lovely pain free weeks, then, I'm getting hit on the left - not as hard or as often, but CH on the left????  That "mini" cycle lasted 4 weeks.

1999: first episode left side
since 2000: chronic right side

Summer 2005:
"episode" left side - right side no pain any more. Got the CH diagnosis + verapamil + oxygen + imitrex nasal.

Autumn 2005: CH back on the right side

Today: pf since six weeks. - Still on Verapamil 2 x 120mg/day though.

pf wishes
Friedrich
