I may have been getting hit earlier, but am not sure - harmones and all.... if that's what it was - it went away for years and then just popped up and went away again for more years. Got diagnosed in September. I was 36 then. Will be 38 in August. Looking back, I always seemed to get a tooth ache or something like that around my Birthday for the last few years. Can't help but wonder if it was really moderate or low grade attacks. My wife made the same observation after I was diagnosed and learned about CH. Found out that one of my uncle's has CH too. His started at 16. He said his are under control now using blood pressure medication. Sounded a little odd to me at first, but when he described the attacks I was convinced that he is indeed a cluster head. Oh boy ... if I keep it up a couple more months then I get to join the chronic club ... Best wishes to all Tony |

Post by blmiller84 on Apr 1st, 2007, 4:05pm I've gotten bad headaches most of my life (I remember sitting with a pillow smashed against my head when I was about 7) so they said I had migraines.. abdominal ones at age 11. But when I was 19 or so my doctor(s) said "oh, perhaps they are actually cluster headaches". I'm not sure if I got those on top of the migraines or the morphed into CH (if that can happen!)... because I didn't have any CH symptoms with my headaches until I was 18 or so. I'm 22 now. Lots of years and years of these to go unless I can kill them ;) ~Barb |

The poster listed the types of migraines, etc. (we've all seen these things, right?) the poster listed the symptoms of CH, and I said that sounded exactly like what I was experiencing for years. the neuro looked like a deer in the headlights when i mentioned it to him, and he agreed with my diagnosis. I told him that he shouldnt charge me for that visit, but he did anyway. chrisw |

Episodic with 18 to 24 months between cycles, so second cycle - unfortunately, at the end of that second cycle, finally got diagnosis. Right now, however, my doc retired and sold his practice to a woman who has completely discounted my doc's diagnosis. Why, you might ask? "Women don't get cluster headaches - they get migraines". Looking for new doc now. BUT Until that happens, I'm going on my own. 02 and rc seeds rock! Sandy |

I lived a fast life during that period and much of it remains a blur to me looking back at it now. I seem to recall my hits were short and my cycles very short so while traumatic, they weren't all that life changing at the time. Not until my 30's did things seem to reach a point of feeling as though something was way wrong, and since my father had them I knew exactly what I was dealing with. scott |

I had no idea what it was. I thought it was a tumor and I was going to die. The pain kept getting worse and worse. I just knew I was dead. The wife took me to the ER and they hooked me up to an IV and dumped something in me and knocked my butt smooth out. My regular doc tried Vicoden, Codeine, and other crap--of course none of it worked. I then found info about CHs online and called up a neurologist. He put me on steroids and anti-depressants. My episode ended in three weeks. I didn't die. 3 years later...SLAM I got hit again! So now at 36 I'm in my second episode of something I thought was gone forever. :( The worst part: I have a bottle of 12-year Dewars sitting on the table collecting dust! ;;D |

I was getting episodes every 18 months and with each consecutive cluster period they get longer. Presently up to 8 weeks long and counting. I was diagnosed in 1998. |

Properly diagnosed in 2000, Age 30. Progressively gotten harder CH over time and the length of the periods vary greatly year to year. |

Back then it was narcotic pain pills to treat the severe pain; not many options available. Had so many attacks at school they pulled me out and gave me a homebound teacher for the last half of my sophomore year. Wasn't properly diagnosed until age 18 with a neurologist in Dallas. I'm 38 now. |

First attack lasted 10 or 11 months (undiagnosed then, but headbangers are unforgettable), and I believed never recurred until February this year. Now I think many less severe attacks have been misdiagnosed as sinus infections. Much has been learned, though not nearly enough, in the intervening years. Back then the only treatment offered was 6 grains of phenobarbitol daily. I had two babies and was useless either way! What a gift O2 would have been. |

I remember having headaches back in my teens, and the docs prescribes specks, then said it was tension headaches. The first identifiable hit/cycle was October 1985, then the years of sinusitis, allergies, more sinus shit, yada yada yada. I did get the beauty speech......why, you can't have clusterheadaches, that's a man's disease..... F YOU DOC! Diagnosed in 1994 at 31 after 9 years of sheer hell. I am now 44. |

He was told by a doctor that also had them that his went away at 50 but it seems to me that Tommy getting wacked at 64 is a little frightening... ree |

Chronic since age 12, and I'm 22 now (in a few months). I'm editing this at 3:50 a.m. because I can't sleep.. this is all I can think about (and, the beast is keeping me up).... I've realized that my pain existed far before the age of 10............. Scents, and the cold triggered the pain HORRIBLY............. it's all I've ever known. I can't believe this wasn't figured out sooner..... but I really just didn't know any different. |

Remember it like it was yesterday...went to sleep a fairly normal woman and woke up 4 hours later a moaning, crying, freaked-out clusterhead! Good news: I was correctly diagnosed within the week...Bad news: Doc told me to take a couple of tylenol whenever I got one of these "headaches" and not to bother calling him in the morning. Unfortunately, his attitude was quite prevalent in most of the Doctors I came across for the next couple of years till I finally got in to see my Hero (haha, rhymes with Neuro!), Dr.R! Good news: He was awesome and didn't screw around witholding meds, downplaying the condition, etc. Bad news: He set a standard of care I am having a helluva time finding in another Neuro or GP now that I have relocated! |

Post by Ctech on Oct 3rd, 2007, 6:44pm 21, now 30 - started the summer of 1998 :'( Usually cycle starts around mid June to mid August and usually ends around mid September (with a few odd ball early or late starts/ends here and there) Skipped a cycle for the first time last year :D Took me 7 years to get diagnosed (self diagnosed) then had a doc to confirm. Seen many docs before I got properly diagnosed - sinuses, wisdom teeth pulled etc... Doctors suck (for the most part) |
