Title: Do my headaches sound like your cluster headaches?
Post by twhite on Jan 16th, 2007, 3:01pm
I have had these terrible headaches for about 2 years now. I've tried maxalt and various other abortive and preventative medicines.

I have a constant nasal drip from chronic rhinitis (allergy, swollen sinuses)  i believe causes my aches.

It starts out mild i'm not sure if its the mucus but i believe it to be. I feel the mucus backing up into my sinus. soon my temples are swollen if i jump around or hold my head the right way i can get the pressure to release.

If i am unable to release this pressure it soon builds up and goes into a full blown migraine type headache. Nasuea, vomitting, throbbing pain both in my right forehead and in the back of my head.

I am pretty positive it is related to the swelling of my sinus incombination with the mucus production.  I can feel the mucus drain and the pressure release as a direct cause in me getting pain releif.

I have had joint dislocations before and this pain is in many ways worse than these experiences. No doctor seems to know anything and they just throw medicine at me and have me try it and come back fi it doesnt work. I have very limited funds and no insurance. I need to find a real solution for this and the proper course of treatment. I can't continue to waste money on visits and medicines that are not effective.

I forgot to add that many times there is a trigger. A certain smell or iritant. It can be anything from cologne to car exhaust and its usually a chemical. Natural odors do not effect me nearly as much as chemical. It is my theory that the chemical smells swell my sinuses and the nasap drip begins backing up into my sinus/head and eventually pushes on the migraine nerve.

Please take the cluster quiz over on the left hand bar there and let us know how what happens.

I did the survey. It doesnt appear to be cluster...but it also doesnt appear to be migraine either. I have found very little information on these rhinitis type headaches =/.

I have read most people thrash about when they have severe headaches. When I get a severe one I cannot move. All I can do i slay with my head tilted sot hat the mucus drains. If i move even the slightist it throbs even more.

been to multiple doctors, multiple specialists. like i say i can't waste any more money on it until i can goign to get some results.

would you folks recommend going to a headache specific doctor? i have seen neurologists and ents multiple ones but there is one doctor local that specialises in headaches.

I was trying to find out where you live but you didnt list your town/state. You said you have seen a neurologist, what did the neuro say?

Have you been to an ENT?  (Ear, nose & Throat)  My brother once suffered from severe headaches due to serious nasal congestion.  He had to undergo surgery and have "windows" cut into his sinus cavities in his nose.  The "windows" allow mucus build-up to move more freely between sinus cavities and thus will alleviate pressure.

Also, have you been to see an Allergist?  If you're suffering from such severe nasal congestion that it's triggering a migraine, I'd have to suspect that it might be caused by an allergy to something.

Sorry I'm not of more help, but what you're suffering from does not sound like clusters at all -- especially if you can sit still or even lay down during a hit.  My wife can tell when one's starting because I start fidgeting.

My mother and I also have had the windows put in the sinuses, my mother said before she had the surgery when she would have an attack that if she so much as moved her eyes it was like getting hit in the head with a sledge hammer. My sinuses where also bad but have never been as bad since the window surgery many years ago. See a good sinus doc and see if the window surgery is right for you.
