Title: Survey smells Post by ax on Dec 7th, 2006, 4:00am Do you have any smells that trigger your CH? What are they? Perfume and farts ;;D trigger me - seriously Sense of smell... Airborne chemicals interact with both first and fifth cranial nerve receptors; with cranial nerve I the result is aroma, with cranial nerve V the result can be irritation and discomfort in subjects predisposed in unknown ways. The irritant reflex from somatic sensory nerves results in neurogenic inflammation, which can mimic the nflammatory response of atopic allergy source- http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1317054 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the only part of the brain that projects into the atmosphere. this is talking about the sense of smell source- http://www.senseofsmell.org/feature/smell101/lesson1/01.php ----------------------------------------------------------------------- your sense of smell doesn't sleep. Title: Re: Survey smells Post by georgej on Dec 7th, 2006, 9:50am No scent triggers, but the sense of smell is interesting. If you haven't yet read Diane Ackerman's book, "A Natural History of the Senses", do so if you get a chance. It has a very readable and interesting section on the sense of smell. Best, George |

Title: Re: Survey smells Post by stpp77 on Dec 7th, 2006, 12:17pm Smells don't trigger mine either. Some definently turn my stomach, but not to bring on an attack...Interesting article! |

Title: Re: Survey smells Post by kcopelin on Dec 7th, 2006, 2:41pm Thank God farts don't trigger...I live with two male people who have, yes, farting contests. OMG I would not be here now.... diesel, gasoline, nail polish remover-don't exactly trigger but I react strongly to them and, oh okay, guess they do trigger-also really sweet perfumes or after shaves. But not farts. However, perhaps this would be a good strategy for me to end the flatulence wars..."you guys have to stop this insanity-it's triggering headaches" Hmmmm... gonna give it a try..... Thanks PFDAN y'all, kathy |

Title: Re: Survey smells Post by Linda_Howell on Dec 7th, 2006, 2:45pm I never thought smells triggered me until I went to a BBQ at my brothers house last summer and he had lit a lot of those citronella candles around the table to keep bugs away. I no sooner sat down, took a few breaths and wham-bam..I got hit hard and so fast that I knew it wasn't just a regular hit that I would have gotten regardless. |
||
Title: Re: Survey smells Post by kcopelin on Dec 7th, 2006, 2:48pm What about farts, Linda? |
||
Title: Re: Survey smells Post by ax on Dec 8th, 2006, 2:01am Thanks all for the input. For me it's not only the smells, but while I'm in a headache I have to avoid breathing through my nose to stay of kip10. I guess triggers are an indivilual thing and have not much to do with the headache itself. Interesting to see those with smell triggers leans toward the alcohol / volatile chemicals. - - oh and hydrogen-sulfide-nitrogen rich 'gas' ;;D |

Title: Re: Survey smells Post by kcopelin on Dec 8th, 2006, 11:05am I announced to my husband and son last night that the farting contests must stop as they may trigger headaches. After 15 minutes, when they could both speak again after rolling on the floor, laughing hysterically, they both in unison asked "What about belching?" Help me...I am surrounded by aliens.... Title: Re: Survey smells Post by BobG on Dec 9th, 2006, 7:39pm The perfume aisles in department stores and the soap-detergent aisles in the supermarket are places I can't stay in for more than about 60 seconds before "that feeling" starts. Oh yeah, any place where one of those stink-butt flavor candles is burning. |

Title: Re: Survey smells Post by BarbaraD on Dec 10th, 2006, 6:16am Smoke is about the only smell that triggers mine that I know of and I'm not sure if that's a smell or not, but I can't be around when someone's burning things. Even smoke from chimney's give me a shadow. |

Title: Re: Survey smells Post by tanner on Dec 10th, 2006, 8:05am Wouldn't know :( There are some I dont like tho...... Why is it that everyone else's farts smell awful, but mine are totally non offensive....honest or am I just nuts from sleep, sex and granddaughter deprivation? ....... :-[.....Tim....I just said fart...KathyC made me do it :o |

Title: Re: Survey smells Post by TonyG1 on Dec 15th, 2006, 8:45am No smell triggers... but my sense of smell becomes bloodhound like during a cycle... |
||
Title: Re: Survey smells Post by MorDog on Dec 15th, 2006, 5:09pm Some colognes and perfumes trigger one for me but I have to smell them for a bit of time. Someone just passing wearing too much wont do it. I usually wear no cologne whatsoever while in cycle. |

Title: Re: Survey smells Post by taraann on Dec 15th, 2006, 5:33pm When episodic bleach and strong perfume triggered me everytime without a doubt........... I esp hated giving up bleach cause I LOVED the smell of a nice bleach cleaned house. I actually have taken a chance a few times this past year and tried cleaning with bleach again and it wasn't a trigger at all so far ... don't know if it's cause I've been chronic for a while or just coincidence. Some strong perfumes still give me a shadow...which sometimes develops into a full ch and sometimes not. |

Title: Re: Survey smells Post by JeffB on Dec 15th, 2006, 7:46pm When I'm in a cycle the beast comes like clock work. But stuff like beer and wine really do me in as far as pain goes. |

Title: Re: Survey smells Post by burnt-toast on Dec 16th, 2006, 9:38am Paint, thinners and Polyurathane can sometimes bring attacks on very fast - sometimes they have no effect. The nightmare seems to have moods. Tom |

Title: Re: Survey smells Post by bowles96 on Dec 29th, 2006, 2:06am Most of my Ch's are triggered by smells, worse being diesel fuel (instant trigger) Also strong perfumes only take a few seconds. Other smells, Scented Candles Air Freshners Certian Foods being prepared Crap you light to keep bugs away Burning Rubber (like at a race track) Racing Fuel Bus Fumes Paint Concret Sealer Smell of large group of animals e.g. circus/zoo And to top it off I work with the general public at a civic center, life can be a bitch! Title: Re: Survey smells Post by B14CK5H33P on Dec 29th, 2006, 6:59am Back when I laid carpet, any time we did a glue tackdown job... the glue would throw me into a cluster everytime. My boss would actually see it in my eye and yell to me to go sit in the van. Also, if I am in an enclosed area with too strong of incense burning, that'll throw me into one. If farts were a trigger for me, I'd be up shit creek without a paddle! Only other triggers are Brandy, Sleep, lack of sleep and major stress. Peace, Carl D |

Title: Re: Survey smells Post by ctygrl1965 on Jan 11th, 2007, 9:17am Nail polish is my husbands trigger. If I want to do my nails, I have to go into the guest bathroom, turn the vent on and warn him not to go in. During his cycle he has to stay away from Hobby Lobby as well |

Title: Re: Survey smells Post by miker6565 on Jan 15th, 2007, 9:08pm i second the fingernail polish!!! anything laquer does me in and this christmas my mom had this scented oil (pine sent) the one that plugs in the outlet, set one off deisel fumes |

Title: Re: Survey smells Post by drivin_blind on Jan 16th, 2007, 10:46am Perfume's (I call them "fat lady perfume") That carpet fresh crap my wife loves to sprinkle all over, and probably the worst, car exhaust. Used to get car sick when I was a kid, then we'd get caught up in traffic jams (this was prior to freeways) and with no air conditioning and the windows down, I'd end up smelling car exhaust. Didn't know anything about clusters back then. All I wanted to do was die. I was probably 6 or 7 years old. Dick |

Title: Re: Survey smells Post by Sandy_C on Jan 16th, 2007, 12:46pm When in cycle - Perfumes - any kind. Incense burning Scented candles Even out of cycle, I avoid the perfume department in stores, candle shops, any place that is burning any kind of scented stuff. It won't trigger a CH unless I'm in cycle, but it will trigger a headache every time. |
