Is it unusual to get a panic attack whlie getting hit?

Hi Charlotte,

Daniel often gets panic attacks during a hit especially during a bad one.

I have asked a few people and many said they had experienced it some time or other, so I guess its actually common.

Are you having a hard time right now?

yep. thx.

But it may have been caused by something else. Joe is in a lot of pain, nerve pain in his foot and leg, and I think I just felt helpless and turned inward & had the panic attack.

What happened to Joes foot?

If he has nerve pain , maybe he can try neurontin or lyrica if its on going.

Hi Charlotte,

I always get a panic attack during my worst hits(Kip 10). Shortness of breath shaking and sometimes nausia. I'm sorry to hear you are suffering so dear.

Charlotte: I prefer to reserve "panic attacks" to describe a rush of anxiety which does not appear to have an obvious trigger.

It may be that the general public is starting to use "panic" as a synonym for "strong" anxiety in which it's pretty clear what the trigger is (a CH, accident, etc.) The distinction is important since the treatments are somewhat different and confusing the two conditions tends to lead to failure in treatment.

A rush of anxiety occurring with a CH attack--and it appears only then--will usually pass as the CH fades. Contrasted with: You're walking down the street, nice day, no problems, and you are hit with a rush of anxiety. That's likely a panic attack. No obvious trigger. (Increasing evidence suggests this is a neurological disposition and not a "normal"/expected response to an obvious, strong stressor.)

Attacks associated only with CH could be helpfully treated with a quick acting med. BUT--for both types--I'd suggest practicing/using the cognitive therapy response which I've posted here under, "Pain vs. Suffering (and which is now posted on the OUCH site). This well researched method has the advantage of actually altering our response to stress--an approach which is, for the long haul, more effective and useful than only medicating the symptoms. In effect, this becomes a protective skill set which can be used to prevent the development of strong anxiety.

Andre, we've had a couple of reports of good outcomes posted in the last couple of months.

But--this approach won't work without a disciplined approach because of the focus needed to alter our automatic emotional responses to stress.

If by panic attacks you mean the wild-eyed oh crap oh crap shaky thing-then yep I get that. But I tend to agree with Bob, its not really a panic attack if you know what's causing it. Anxiety based on the CH, anticipating the next hit, those can be dealt with using Bob's technique. I am also on alprazalom (anti-anxiety) meds just for this-I take one when I have to have blood work done, or when I have a 30 minute or longer drive I have to make because I know what's gonna happen and I get a little freaked out.

Thx, peeps. I reprinted the article and am doing good with not suffering. At one time, I was treated for panic disorder and this was like that.

I don't think fear of ch triggered it, but I thought maybe it was a chemical reaction included during a certain stage of a hit?
