Title: Nerve Damage?
Post by BigCoffinHunter on Oct 6th, 2006, 11:14am
I was just wondering if there are any long term effects to your trigeminal nerve from these headaches?  The pain is caused by swelling blood vessels compressing the nerve correct?  After years of that much pressure, does any damage ever occur?

Considering that there are few doctors, including neuros, who can even correctly diagnose CH, I seriously doubt that any studies have been done about long term effects on the nerves.

I can't answer your question - I'm sorry.

I guess it doesn't matter too much.  Nerve damage would mean it's not transmitting as much pain right?  I was just thinking about how these things worked and that question popped into my head.

It will still hurt from the inside.  I don't know about permanent damage.

It depends on which nerve is damaged. There are separate nerves for pain and motor. If the motor nerve branche of the trigeminal is damaged then you get things like droopy eyelids for a while until the nerve heals again. If you get the pain nerve damaged then they can either go numb or tingle more until the nerve heals.

The body heals itself all the time and with cluster, the pressure on the nerve is not too long although its repeatitive, therefore irritation of the nerve is very common but permanent damage is rare.

Hope that helps

Annette

I asked my doctor about this-said that something that hurts this bad has got to be doing damage.  Reply-not sure yet.  I can tell you that the right side (cluster)of my face is "saggier" than the left all the time.  Not only the eyelid but the corner of my mounth...I have a bit of a lopsided grin.  Hopefully others see it as a sign of character ::)I believe it is from 25 years of CHs.  But I could be wrong...that happened once a few years ago 8)

My CH started right after I had a dental surgery on the right side of my gums.  I had an infection that would not go away.  The Oral Surgeon went into my gum line  scraped the infection away and shaved my teeth down from the top.  That was really fun.. Anyway, during the surgery I felt an extremely sharp pain that shot up and down the right side of my face.  It only hurt for a second but it was extreme.  My CH started right after that.  I asked my Doc about it but he doesn't really know.  I think that the Surgeon may have hit my trigeminal nerve and irritated it.  That would be hard to prove but what is the chance the headaches started right after that coincidentally?

I's say yes.

After 36 years of this crap, the left side of my face permanently feels numb/swollen.  I always have sinus problems on my left side.  The left side of my neck is always tight/sore.  All of this even when not in cycle.

I'm episodic, left side.

i have read that some people end up with permanent eye droop, dont know if that would be nerve damge or musle/skin damage from contatant swellling.

other than that i havent read of any damage.

i once had a neuro say to me off the cuff like,
'Ch cause pain but it doesnt really hurt you'
