A woman I was talking to last night was telling me her step-daughter had migranes [yes, I know this isn't a migrane forum, please stay with me] starting when she was about 19, went on for years getting worse and worse. She had about given up when her mother found a Dr in Long Island who treated her. In his migrane practice the common thread was forcept deliverys during birth with the headache onset in late teen and early twenties. From what she told me it had to do with the compression and the nerves.This girl had brain surgery and is now doing fine, but we were wondering is this could also be common in people with clusters?

Hello

As far as I know, and I did a fair bit of training in obstetric, that a proper forcep delivery done by a skilful doctor should not cause any damage of any type to the head, brain or nerves. The only thing it can do is superficial bruising to the skin on the outside which will heal perfectly after a few days.

Cluster headaches are caused by internal problems arising from the hypothalamus deep in the middle of the skull. No outside compression could have touched it at birth during delivery or the baby wouldnt have survived.

I hope this will help disperse any worry for mothers who have had their children born by forcep delivery.

Very true, Annette.
The other thing that should be mentioned is that prior to 1960 or so, most vaginal deliveries in the US involved general anesthesia and forceps. The prevelance of CH compared to how many deliveries were made with forceps just doesn't fit.

I was born by c-section because of a prolapsed cord, maybe it was the lack of oxygen for awhile that did it.... [smiley=laugh.gif]
