Title: oxy question Post by wogdoggy on Sep 18th, 2006, 2:11pm are there limits on how much you can take in in one day? |
||
Title: Re: oxy question Post by pattik on Sep 18th, 2006, 2:17pm No, I don't think so. But if it hasn't aborted your headache after 15 minutes or so, it's probably not going to work on that round. If you are using a high enough LPM and a good non-rebreather mask, you should see results within that amount of time. Although, it doesn't work every single time for everyone, and for some, not at all. |

Title: Re: oxy question Post by brewcrew on Sep 18th, 2006, 2:30pm There is such a thing as oxygen toxicity, and it will start to damage the aveoli in your lungs. I think I saw it stated somewhere that even if you got hit 10 times a day and you sucked down pure O2 for 20 minutes on each of those hits, you would still be a long way away from getting to that point. So in other words, shouldn't be a problem for CH sufferers. You should talk to your doc to make sure I heard correctly. |

Title: Re: oxy question Post by Guiseppi on Sep 18th, 2006, 4:59pm I think that's where the warning came from to not strap the mask on but to hold it with your hand. That way if you drift off to sleep as the beast leaves you, you don't drain the tank at 15 lpm!!! Guiseppi |

Title: Re: oxy question Post by Mr. Happy on Sep 18th, 2006, 10:03pm Depends on whether you're talking oxy-gen or oxy-contin. Haven't been able to overdose on oxy-gen, no matter what.....and I'm not much for conservation. No clue on door #2. Clustermasx (http://clustermasx.com) R Us. Hap |

Title: Re: oxy question Post by Dave_S on Sep 21st, 2006, 12:29am % GP doctors refused to perscribe me 02 because they said it would damage my lungs. I asked my current doctor who has 2 other ch he treats he said yes it definitly will damage your lungs causing scare tissue if you leave it on high enoug long enoug over time it will cause scare tissue. The madicale supply I get my 02 from says the same thing. They both say smokers are at a greater risk. When asked how much and how long is to much they said no one is sure but isint 02 a corrosive I think it is but am not a chemist. good luck Dave S |

Title: Re: oxy question Post by BB on Sep 21st, 2006, 8:32am Pure oxygen breathed in long enough and at a high enough flow rate will cause some tissue damage, but I would say that the cigarettes that most CH smoke would cause far more damage than the oxygen can ever do. If each time used is limited to under 30 mins than it should be pretty safe. Compared to the other drugs and the dosages prescribed for CH, oxygen is pretty tamed I 'd say. Painfree wishes to all. Title: Re: oxy question Post by brewcrew on Sep 21st, 2006, 9:24am The other thing about O2 usage for CH is that, if it's not working after 20 minutes or so, it's not going to work. Most around here have already experienced that, so the whole O2 toxicity/damage thing is kind of self-limiting and pretty much a non-issue. |

Title: Re: oxy question Post by big guy on Sep 22nd, 2006, 6:29am Back at the start of this cycle I went to the ER for a Kip 10 that wouldn't stop. I demanded O2 but I think I was to far along for the O2 too help. I didn't know better and the nurses didn't either so the O2 was left on me most of the day. My chest did feel dried out for at least a week afterward. I don't feel like there was any lasting damage though. Best Wishes Big Guy |

Title: Re: oxy question Post by mignazito on Sep 23rd, 2006, 8:12pm For what it's worth, here is my experience with oxygen. I have been using it for about 10 years now. I have four cylinders. 1-240cf, 1-120cf and 2-20cf. I have three sets of regualtors. The big 240 is my nightime friend. The 120 is my "swing" cylinder when I am having the 240 refilled. The 240 and the 20s are owned by me. The 120 is a lease unit at $3/mo along with my welding tanks at $6/mo. I found the high flow rates often suggested to be wasteful and ineffective. To get relief you need to get blood saturation of O2 to 98%. I flow at 4-5 cfm and use a deep breathing technique. I breath in at the 4-5 cfm rate and fill my lungs as deeply as I can using a tube in my mouth. When my lungs are as full as I can get them, I exhale and start the cycle again. Relief can come as quickly as 3 or 4 minutes and ussualy no more than 10 minutes with about 5 being average. I have been using this technique for years whenever I have a bought of CHs. The little 20s are my portables for the car when away from home and my big 240 life saver. Lung damage according to the medicals guys I have tald to comes after long term all day use of O2. Af few minutes a day is not an issue. Recently I bought some "Sinus-Busters" capcaisin "hot pepper" nasal spray which I'm thinking of trying. anyone ever tried this? |

Huh?, 4-5 cfm?, tube in mouth? Could you explain further? Go ahead and try the sinus busters spray, but it may be cheaper to go to your local police station and have them pepper spray you for free [smiley=laugh.gif] |

If it drops below 92% you will start to get blue around the lips and finger tips. Annette |

First thing that should be done is to do away with the strap that comes on the 02 masks. This way..if you fall asleep, the mask will naturally fall from the face. It's a real waste of 02...but better than you staying on it any longer than necessary. For some reason..I'm thinking like Randy, (that's scarey :o), and wondering if this post is in reference to Oxycontin....and not Oxygen. Jean Nope...it's 02...guess I'm not thinking like RJ.(anymore). :-/ after all..sheesh, that's a relief ;;D |

Title: Re: oxy question Post by mynm156 on Sep 27th, 2006, 10:55am Hey Wogdoggy, Im a Respiratory Therapist and as long as you have no underlying pulmonary disease you should be fine. For you the worst case situation is that you fel asleep with it on for maybe 12-14 hours you MIGHT begin to wash the Nitrogen out of your lungs. This would actuaaly cause your lungs to callaps. You see nitrogen is used by our bodies to keep our lungs inflated its molecule is too big to diffuse accross the capilary beds in our lungs. In order to have oxygen toxicity you need to have SEVERE pulmonary disease so much so that your body has changed its mechanism that drives us to breathe. In normal respiration our bodies breathe off its desire to have or get rid of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) CO2 effects our blood chemistry which controls our bodies homeostasis. Mess it up and it messes up everything. So I have rambled on WAY TOO MUCH already suffice to say you should be fine!! Good Vibes MYNM156 PS Hey mignazito A normal persons Oxygen saturation should already be in the high 90% if you are on 100% oxygen you saturations better be 100% And a Saturation of 92% will not make you become Cyanotic or BLUE around the lips our O2 Sats drop and climb allday long and will drop for shortperiods of time into the low 90s without any problems your Sats have to be in the 80's for several mins before your body becomes blue |

Hi again.. Wow...I've never heard this before. Does he have a non-rebreather mask...and a regulator that delivers 12-15 lpm? I'm interested to know if the 02 works for him. 02 is all I use for my CH. I'm episodic...with no cycle. My CH hits are random. I've had great success with 02...it works very well for me. Thanks for reaching out...I hope we can help...and ease your mind somewhat. Jean |
